To ask if you give stuff away for free

I give lots away and people always say I should sell stuff but I honestly can’t be bothered with how picky people are even over items that cost a £1.

All the time. It's gets rid quickly, and helps people out. I use Trash Nothing, Freecycle, and Olio for any food we don't need.

Vodkacarbsandtobacco · 19/09/2021 20:53

I always give my kids good condition but outgrown clothes and trainers to either a charity shop near my house or a friend who has slightly younger kids. I wouldn't ever even think to sell them, but if I have an item which I thought would be worth say £20-30 or more I would put it on Ebay (things like games consoles or old phones) I'm not well off at all and live month to month but I also have friends who pass on their outgrown kids clothes to me so it works well. I could never be bothered with freecycle because I've read on mumsnet how rude people are on there xxx

Dogmum40 · 19/09/2021 21:02

I always give things away for free whether they are cheap or expensive, I once lived hand to mouth and couldn’t afford anything except bills (not even food) so now when I get rid of stuff I always ask local charities, friends who work in the community or post online, I like to think I’m paying it forward a little bit from when I got lots of help with things that I couldn’t afford

Suzi888 · 19/09/2021 21:08

Yes, but people are so cheeky and ask for delivery because they can’t drive etc and I end up taking the stuff to their homes. Angry Once took a Nintendo console and they weren’t in. Got home and they asked for redelivery, I stupidly went back and they still weren’t there. It was about 15 miles away. They then messaged to say can we collect.

stillcrazyafterall · 19/09/2021 21:11

If I don't want money for it I give it to charity, I've been 'had' before by a dealer who takes things for free then sells it without saying that's what he was doing.

Notimeforaname · 19/09/2021 21:17

I do. I gave away the entire contents of my apartment before I moved back to my home country. White goods, furniture, everything. Went to a charity that houses and furnishes houses for people who need it.

So many people I knew seemed quite bothered by this. Telling me how much I could have gotten or where I could have put it up online. Couldn't be arsed and I didn't need it.

Notimeforaname · 19/09/2021 21:20

Yes. It always intrigues me when people actually care what charity gets their things. “Oh, they sell the stuff they get donated, I want them to go to people for free”, etc. I couldn’t care less as long as it’s out of our house!

Oh yea I got a lot of that too..''those removal men will just pick the bits they want it wont all make it to the charity'' Confused
I was moving countries. If someone got use out of it and came to take it all away saving me the job..fantastic!

Kite22 · 19/09/2021 21:22

Yes I always do, I've been in a position where I've needed either free or extremely cheap items and now I'm in an okay position I always think of past me and what people need.

This ^

@Chicchicchicchiclana I'm not sure about people "checking their privilege" - if people give stuff away, it means others get stuff for free. If people only sell stuff, there is nothing free to collect.

I've used Freecycle since it started up in the UK, then ours became freegle. Now I use the local giving sites. I've been lucky enough to have stuff given to me / us when we were skint and now I pass stuff on to other folk for free.

Frankola · 19/09/2021 21:24

Yes. I see them as little acts of kindness.

I have a friend who will literally sell old tat when she clears out her house for £2 and £3 on Facebook. It always make me laugh.

Newnormal99 · 19/09/2021 21:25

Mix of everything. Some clothes to a friend for her Dd. My clothes usually straight to charity shop. Toys I usually try and sell. Small toys I might give to charity shop- they seem to bundle the tiny ones up in small pocket money bags. Furniture from when I'm redoing my dds rooms I usually sell. Kallax units are massively populate round here second hand. Some bigger bits of dd clothes such as coats I might try and sell. I have a spare drawer under the bed now so I can stick it out if the way until it goes.

Biggest thing I have away was my old kitchen. Well used but was taken by a young girl who was pregnant for I guess her first home. It was about 6-7 car trips for her dad!

IsThisAkissingBook · 19/09/2021 21:26

Yes because I find if I do a good deed I get it back tenfold.

WorriedMillie · 19/09/2021 21:29

I either hand on to friends or give to charity. Selling, or giving away on Facebook for eg, seems to bring out the CFs and time wasters and “can I be considered?” brigade (I have no idea why that request annoys me so much, but it does 😂)

Vodkacarbsandtobacco · 19/09/2021 21:47

@Frankola that's so true, I see so many people selling absolutely anything they have for £1/£2/£3 and it pisses me off so much! It's always the ones who really don't even need the money at all isn't it 😫 I told a bit of a lie by omission on my earlier reply, I forgot that about 4 years ago I had a huge bundle of my sons baby clothes (1 massive binbag full) and I washed them all, laid them out on the table, took photos and put them on ebay as a bundle starting of at 99p bidding collection only. After 7 days someone won them for £6 and came to my house to pick them up, she arrived heavily pregnant and had got the bus. She was so grateful and after she had left I felt like an absolute arsehole for taking the £6 off her when she handed it to me 🙈 that's the first and only time I ever sold any clothes, I had actually forgotten all about that until now I must have selective guilty memory. I'm so lucky that my lovely mother in law buys my children so many clothes (even bought their school jumpers this year as she works at the school) that I never really need to buy them much myself, I'm fully aware of how fortunate I am to have that and most people don't, so I'd never ever sell clothes again as I've got no right to and she is always so happy to know I've handed clothes down or donated them. Well anyway that's my rambling over and thanks to this thread I'll be tossing and turning with guilt all night about my selfish £6 profit I made a few years back 😂xxx

Washeduponthebeach · 19/09/2021 21:52

Freecycle is great. There is virtually nothing someone doesn't want, somewhere. Better than it going into landfill.

spicedappledonuts · 19/09/2021 22:06

We have recently bought somewhere and I was chatting to our neighbor about using Facebook marketplace to get stuff because it is very cheap and great quality stuff.
He started talking about how little he got for his stuff when he sold to move here.
He moved years ago but still felt upset by it.

I just donate my stuff and get to feel good about it.
If you don't really need the money it is a much better experience.

MadamMalkin · 19/09/2021 22:08

I do. I'm just glad to be rid of it 95% of the time.

spicedappledonuts · 19/09/2021 22:11

I gave away my baby stuff on freecycle because charity shop wouldn't accept it and got a lovely thank you text from the pregnant lady whose DP collected it.

Rrrob · 19/09/2021 22:15

Yep. Gave some unworn baby clothes away earlier. Next is an unused shower screen (worth £250 so DH wants to sell it....can’t be doing with the faff. It was a free replacement).

MusicTeacherSussex · 19/09/2021 22:20

You would be surprised what you can get a few quid for. We stick it in the takeaway kitty.

BlueberrySugar · 19/09/2021 22:28

Yes.

I always see baby items for £1 on local selling sites and think why not just donate them to charity.

I know some people need it, don't get me wrong but usually £1 isn't much for most people.
