To ask if you give stuff away for free

I give lots away and people always say I should sell stuff but I honestly can’t be bothered with how picky people are even over items that cost a £1.

Yes absolutely, it’s good karma

CottageOnTheHill · 19/09/2021 18:23

I don’t sell things but I stopped posting on the free pages. I had numerous things to give away ie American fridge freezer, microwave, suite, and many large household items. I got fed up with folk expecting me to deliver to them or not turning up to collect. Some folk are real CFers on those free pages. I ended up paying a guy who does house clearances to take the things away.

nordica · 19/09/2021 18:23

Yes, although it's easier to give a few bags at a time to a charity shop or collection rather than individual items. On FB groups people just waste your time scheduling and rescheduling collection times or not turning up. Sometimes I put household items or books on the front garden wall with a sign for anyone who wants them. It's not very successful on my current road though because it's not busy so very few people will walk past and see them.

Pinkfluffyunicornsandrainbows · 19/09/2021 18:26

I give to family, friends and charity shops. Selling things is too much hassle! I don't have the time, energy or inclination to start putting things on ebay or similar.

PeonyTime · 19/09/2021 18:26

I give stuff away, but if I need to advertise it I put a nominal price on it, to weed out half the time wasters.

PegasusReturns · 19/09/2021 18:27

My cleaner takes pretty much everything I’m getting rid of. I have no idea whether she keeps it, sells it or what.

Otherwise I give things away on a local community group.

godmum56 · 19/09/2021 18:27

freecycle! I love it

Jedstre · 19/09/2021 18:28

Some things I give away and some things I sell on eBay and Vinted.

I’ve offered quite a few free things on trash for nothing. As others have mentioned I ignore the “I’ll have it” or “can you deliver”.

I gave away an IKEA storage unit a few weeks ago. I had loads of emails about that and gave it to a teacher who said she’d absolutely love it for sorting her paperwork. Another lovely person collected lots of packing materials and boxes after we moved and she gave me a bottle of wine. It was completely unexpected, as I offered them for free, but so kind of her.

elbea · 19/09/2021 18:30

Our local city has a toy and clothes exchange for children’s things. Much easier than trying to sell stuff, you drop off things that are grown out of and then can go and ‘shop’ other people’s things. Everything is pre sorted so only good quality things are available. Got a lovely boden snowsuit for my daughter last time I went.

muddyford · 19/09/2021 18:33

Yes, always. Though I did sell a Le Creuset casserole and a couple of canvas wardrobes. Books, clothes and furniture all go to charity.

Camdenish · 19/09/2021 18:33

@steff13

Yes. I just gave away a dozen spider plants. Mine had about 30 babies, and I cut them off and potted them, then gave some to family and friends. I put the ones that were left on a table in front of the house with a sign. They were gone in a day.
My daughter came home from school with three spider plants. She’d walked past a house where someone was giving them away. She loves them like they are her pets. Lovely thing to do.

I tend to give stuff away. If I don't want anything in my house anymore, I just ask around if anyone would like a certain item for free. I am just in the middle of doing this now, as I have a beautiful long oak coffee table to get rid of. It was quite expensive, but I want to just give it away, to someone who may like it.

HairyScaryMonster · 19/09/2021 18:38

If I can get my act together I put loads on FB market place at £2 a piece. There's nearly always someone home and at that price happy to leave outside for collection and money through the door. I've made £30/40 for barely any effort. If it doesn't go in a couple of weeks o charity it.

toolazytothinkofausername · 19/09/2021 18:39

I donate items to local charity shop.

I once sold an item on eBay. The buyers came to collect it from my house as it was a big item. 4 days later, I get a message from the buyers saying it was in very bad condition and wanted an immediate refund without returning the item. I had 10 days of messaging back and forth telling them they are cheeky fuckers and they would not have taken the item if it had been the way they described. Thankfully eBay sided with me and closed the case but it was very stressful.

reluctantbrit · 19/09/2021 18:39

It depends. I would say 80% of the time it goes away for free, in most cases it is an item I just want to. have a nice new home not to make money. I may ask the receiver to make a food bank donation next time they shop.

Some items like DD's old violin I sell.

Clothes end up in the clothes bank, charity shop or go to a refuge if there is an appeal and I am just in the process of sorting out.

ShowOfHands · 19/09/2021 18:39

All the time. I've just given a sofa and chest of drawers to a local hospice charity. It was a v nice chest of drawers too. Similarly, we put things out the front of the house such as decent toys, small furniture items and similar. Other stuff we offer free on FB or donate to charities where appropriate. I've just given some unused toiletries to the local shelter, along with a few other things they need. I almost never bother with selling things.

CookieDoughKid · 19/09/2021 18:41

Yes. Always. My hourly rate is ££££ compared to the pounds I could get selling stuff on eBay. It doesn't make sense financial sense hour per hour for me to sift through and do car boot or eBay.

ApplesAreTheBaneOfMyLife · 19/09/2021 18:41

Yes, all the time.

We have a very active village freecycle group

CookieDoughKid · 19/09/2021 18:41

I appreciate not everyone is in that position to pick and choose like that.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 19/09/2021 18:48

A lot of privilege checking needs to go on here. On first impressions I am a lucky middle class person living in an expensive house. But that doesn't mean we have a lot of disposable income and Covid has cost us tens of thousands of £. I will ask a pound or two for items on FB marketplace as we are also supporting a child through Uni with no grants because "on paper" our income is too high. But we can honestly use any extra income just now.

GameSetMatch · 19/09/2021 18:50

All the time! I really can not be bothered to sell things when a charity could make use of them. Just took a huge bag of peppy pig toys and a toy pram to the local charity shop, I hope some child will be happy with them, they’d make a great Xmas gift.

Boombadoom · 19/09/2021 18:51

Me too.

KarmaStar · 19/09/2021 18:52

Yes lots.

SingingInTheShithouse · 19/09/2021 18:52

I do. But try to pass on to friends/family or friends of friends if I can as bar one instance, that's generally been much easier & it's nice to know it's useful & has gone to a good home

I just want it gone & selling stuff can be such a hassle, heck even giving stuff away on the wrong place can be too much of a headache at times. Plus our bigger selling boards have people taking stuff to resell, which is cheeky in my book

DH moans like hell that I could sell stuff, but as he doesn't get off his backside & sell it himself, he can feck off

SarahBellam · 19/09/2021 18:53

I'm in a giving away group. I've given away some really good stuff (barely worn DMs, Kipling bag, Lego, etc.) but I've also got some really good stuff - an ornate mirror and a Dimplex fire. Keeps stuff out of landfill and goes to people who are happy to come and pick it up quickly.
