To ask if you give stuff away for free

I give lots away and people always say I should sell stuff but I honestly can’t be bothered with how picky people are even over items that cost a £1.

I spent too many years Ebaying the shit out of my house to find money for Christmas presents.
Unless I can be £50 + better off, I'd rather give things to someone who might need them.

And with things like fridges, kettles, microwaves etc, I know enough local charities who are grateful for good working practical things. I'm grateful to be in a position now that I can help.

But I don't begrudge anyone else selling things!

WellTidy · 19/09/2021 17:46

I also give our cleaner all the little samples/minis which come with high end cosmetics or beauty boxes that I won’t use.

JackieCollinshasnoauthority · 19/09/2021 17:47

On Facebook, it's a faff giving away things for free! Why can't people read?

My local tip now has a "too good to waste" section and they take it to charity shop for you. It's been a god send when decluttering.

Ratched · 19/09/2021 17:50

I tried giving loads of stuff away for free with no success last year. Lots of 'in line' messages(wtf)!? and plans to collect. Lots of sob stories about having no transport. And still no takers.
On the advice of someone here, I put everything back up for sale for £5 and sold immediately 🤔

Neonplant · 19/09/2021 17:52

All, the time. I can't be arsed selling stuff unless I'll get 20 to 30 pounds min for it.

Indoctro · 19/09/2021 17:53

No I always give it away I chuck it on Facebook market and it's normally gone the same day

Suits me I can't be arsed trying to sell stuff I don't want

Auntienumber8 · 19/09/2021 17:54

Always apart from evening gowns and cocktail frocks. I used to go to a lot of black tie events. So would buy, wear once or twice and then get rid of it through a really decent dress agency. Those days are gone.

I have given everything else to charity or in lockdown put out a few things on my garden wall. I put out two slim wooden dvd cabinets, they went very quickly. All the little hotel shampoos were given to a day centre. DH always takes them and used to travel loads for work. I have very sensitive skin and contact allergies to a lot of scents so they were useless for us.

Mumoblue · 19/09/2021 18:00

I’m in a lot of groups for giving free stuff or swapping. I’ve done it a couple of times.
Right now I’ve got something up that nobody seems to want (big sofa cushions) which is a bit of a bugger.

But I’m also trying to sell some stuff, mostly old baby clothes.
If I’d buy it myself I’ll sell it, but if I think selling it isn’t worth it then I’ll just give it away or swap it for something.

Aquamarine1029 · 19/09/2021 18:02

I frequently give things away and I've never sold anything aside from very big ticket items like a car. I'm happy for someone else to be able to use something I no longer need or want.

AuntieStella · 19/09/2021 18:04

I usually give stuff away to a charity shop. Selling is too much faff, but I might consider it for unusual items that are likely to fetch a good price

IncessantNameChanger · 19/09/2021 18:05

I do. I also sell some of my kids old clothes. But after selling some brand new with tags kids clothes on vinted for £2 and someone saying it was only in passable condition and the next buyer getting a bundle of Boden clothes for free as one 50p item had a stain I can not be arsed. I checked everything careful and said the two items had a pen dot in my listings. It actually made me feel angry where as I could lose the £2 and give it away and feel ok about myself.

I'm less and less likely to have things like kids clothes in excess now too. Better to buy less and then its worn out at end of its age range. Less guilt all round

However giving away on FB etc not so much. I have posted about my two stalker CF before. One of whom is now looking for a petrol mower. She never tells you that cant collect and says yes to everything. Another source of inner rage as then no one gets a look in as she earmarked everything and never collects anything. I know, block her

MinnieMountain · 19/09/2021 18:05

Occasionally, but it’s always a nuisance.

Even DS’s old bike is being sold to a friend rather than online.

I put lots out the front, bigger/more random things go on Freecycle.

suzy2b · 19/09/2021 18:06

I'v got a brand new kids bike can't sell it no takers so I'm going to give it to a friend will be to big for her daughter ,for a few yrs

MazzleDazzle · 19/09/2021 18:07

I recently gave away lots of household items only for them to appear on fb the next day for sale!

GloriaPunniford · 19/09/2021 18:07

I leave things outside my house with a large FREE sign. It’s never there by the end of day.

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 19/09/2021 18:08

Only if I can leave it out front with a ‘free’ sign. Some stuff I sell (made £300 back a few months ago when having a clear out).

ISpyCobraKai · 19/09/2021 18:09

Honestly?
I mainly bin it these days.
Trying to sell it, or even give it away is more hassle than it's worth.

steff13 · 19/09/2021 18:09

Yes. I just gave away a dozen spider plants. Mine had about 30 babies, and I cut them off and potted them, then gave some to family and friends. I put the ones that were left on a table in front of the house with a sign. They were gone in a day.

Workinghardeveryday · 19/09/2021 18:11

I do yes. Kids have far too many clothes and only ever wear a few of them!
Most things I give away are brand new and never worn!!!

Dunrovi · 19/09/2021 18:12

I have a friend who is constantly revamping her house and she is always advertising unwanted stuff (for example, cushions, ornaments, kitchenware) on her Facebook page i.e. selling to friends (not Facebook marketplace). I think it's a bit weird. I wouldn't dream of charging friends for small secondhand home decor items (wouldn't replace them as often as she does either, but that's another story!).
Another friend does the same with her clothes. Maybe it's a bit different to charge for expensive designer items but these are things like Top Shop T-shirt's, work clothes from Next etc, worn Converse etc. I think it's a bit cheeky to charge friends for low value items like these?

Driftingblue · 19/09/2021 18:14

I really can’t stand the hassle of selling items. I did it when Dd was very young and I was staying home with her because I had the time and money was more precious. It’s no longer worth it to me personally, so I mostly just donate to thrift stores now.

If I have an item that isn’t appropriate for a thrift store, my preferred giveaway method is to watch my local moms group and neighborhood group for someone to mention being on the lookout for something. Then I contact them in private message and offer the item for free. This tends to result in a quick exchange with zero flaking.

OohThatCat · 19/09/2021 18:15

I do give away items on Olio but I find even free stuff people tend to get entitled and grabby about! I've had people mess me about wanting to pick stuff up, not turning up, rescheduling, not turning up again, and loads of people who suddenly decide I'm too far from them asking if I can spend my precious time going all the way to their house to drop off the item I am giving away for FREE to their doorstep. Once person turned up, didn't even acknowledge me when I opened the door, reached out their hand for the stuff grabbed the bag off me and never even said thank you. The ultimate definition of grabby!

You do have to weed out the entitled cheeky fuckers!

TheGoogleMum · 19/09/2021 18:15

Yes. My friend had a baby after me so gave her lots of things. I sometimes sell things but if I know I can't be bothered with the hassle I'll just give it away!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 19/09/2021 18:17

Yes- baby stuff rarely sells, by the time my once used Moses basket (£70) got down to £10 I decided I’d rather have good karma and gave it away

FourTeaFallOut · 19/09/2021 18:20

Yeah, I do, I just take stuff to the charity shop or hand things down to younger kids in the family.
