To ask if you give stuff away for free

I give lots away and people always say I should sell stuff but I honestly can’t be bothered with how picky people are even over items that cost a £1.

TartanJumper · 19/09/2021 18:54

I do. Can't be arsed with selling online, so I will give to friends for free if they want it, or to charity.

SingingInTheShithouse · 19/09/2021 18:54

As in taking cheap stuff & knocking the price right down, or free stuff & reselling

swimlyn · 19/09/2021 18:54

Obviously give lots to the charity shops, in clean saleable condition.

For local sites (whatever) I price it reasonably and when people actually turn up, I often give it to them.

Free stuff, especially Freecycle, can be a hiding to nothing with timewasters, such as “can you deliver”, and “I’ll have that” for every post you make. Then the chancers don’t turn up.

sweetkitty · 19/09/2021 18:55

I do, we can afford to now so if we don’t need the money I give it away.

JazzerMcCreary · 19/09/2021 18:56

I’ve given loads of baby stuff away to charity or friends. I honestly can’t be bothered with the effort of selling it.

I sold a bundle of cloth nappies on marketplace for way less (I’m talking like £10 rather than £50 or more) than I would gotten if I could be bothered to individually list things and post them. I just can’t be bothered.

CaptaNoctem · 19/09/2021 18:59

Like everyone else I really can't be bothered to sell anything.

It goes at the end of the drive with a help yourself sign. I actually have a Lloyd Loom style antique commode that is out there now. I hope it goes soon - it's been a week and it's still there.

DH says I should put a £10 sign on it and it'll be stolen overnight!

PeriChristmas · 19/09/2021 19:10

@MazzleDazzle

Gave away a full uniform set the other day, enough so the parents didn't have to buy anything but shoes.

This reminds me, I once offered school uniform items for free - some with tags - and the first reply was ‘I’ll take these. Can you deliver?’. No please of thank you! CFs.

So bloody cheeky!!!
Gilly12345 · 19/09/2021 19:11

I don’t get some people selling things for a couple of quid as it’s not worth the effort, that’s what charity shops are for I think.

Selling things for £10 plus however is a different matter.

You "don't get" people having very little money?
godmum56 · 19/09/2021 19:17

yes, I ignore freecycle responses that are rude, abrupt or in text speak. I have met some lovely folk through it though and when I was letting go of late DH's stuff it was a real comfort.

EezyOozy · 19/09/2021 19:25

I will give things away for free unless they're worth more than about £50. I can't be bothered with the hassle for small items

WaterAndRichTea · 19/09/2021 19:26

Charity shop - So much less grief

LynetteScavo · 19/09/2021 19:31

I ask for £2 for things as personally I feel grabby going for something that is free.

DH gives things away for free, and then people ask him to deliver. HmmHe holds back from saying "The tip is closer than your house, 15 miles away, mate"

HalzTangz · 19/09/2021 19:32

I gave up selling stuff a couple of years ago, got fed up of no shows. I now donate everything to homeless shelters

Ragwort · 19/09/2021 19:39

Yes - I work in a charity shop so anything I (or my extended family) don't want I just take into work - assuming it is in a saleable condition of course. Or if I know someone in need I will give it directly to them. Over the years, especially when my DS was a baby, I have really benefited from other peoples kindness so now I like to 'repay' their generosity. We had our DS a lot later than friends had their DC and I was genuinely given everything we needed when he was born and second hand clothes until he was at least 10 Grin.

I know I am lucky but I don't 'need' the money I could possibly earn from selling stuff and it seems a huge amount of effort for a few ££s.

fuzzymoomin · 19/09/2021 19:42

If it's something I can sell for £20 upwards then I try to sell to get a bit of extra cash. If not worth that then I happily give away rather than send to landfill. I have benefited from people giving things away too so I like to pay it back to society.

leavesthataregreen · 19/09/2021 19:48

I do because I can't be bothered to sell.

cobblers123 · 19/09/2021 19:52

In the past six weeks I've given loads to local Freecycle sites, a lot of it i could possibly have sold..

I've stopped doing it now because of the pain in the arse people who don't turn up to collect or suddenly couldn't find your address and went home or suddenly have to work or live too far away and only seem to realise at the time they are supposed to collect that it's 20 miles away even though my location is on the advert.

Wankers!!Angry

janj2301 · 19/09/2021 19:57

I like the Freecysle types who expect to collect a large item (dining table & 6 chairs) in a small family car turn up at your place then want you to deliver, in your small family car!! I was down sizing a few years ago happened alot

Wankers!!

I had exactly the same experience & more!!

I only use our local Facebook notice board or via friends now. Anything else has been a nightmare Confused

Like the woman who insisted I deliver a free ball pond & balls, because with 5 kids she could be expected to drag them all into town to collect it. She never ever considered that that might not even be possible. I simply said no, it's collection only as per my advert. This resulted in tons of begging & then abusive messages until I had to block her 🥴

Or the woman who came to pick up a free steam cleaner & loudly complained that there was no instruction manual with it & that I needed to find it for her or at least find her a link. It was very easy to use, just plug in & go, but that clearly wasn't good enough. She took it & we didn't even get a bloody thank you 😏

SecretWitch · 19/09/2021 20:24

In our neighbourhood it’s understood that anything left in a box at the edge of your garden is free. I often chuck candles, vases and clothes in our box.

Wegobshite · 19/09/2021 20:25

Yes I’ve just given away 2 motorbikes and a trailer 😂
They were in my parents house who recently passed away
One bike didn’t work one did but needed some work done on it

The guy I know agreed to take them both as he had serviced them before and knew he was getting a good deal
He offered to split any money but i said as long as as he took them both he could keep anything he made on them I reckon he will make at least 1500 probably more more but I don’t care I just needed them all gone quickly
One was in a difficult place to get so he definitely had to work for it and was there for hours 😂
For me my time is worth more than waiting around trying to sell something I have no idea about 😂

GoodnightGrandma · 19/09/2021 20:26

I put stuff on Freecycle. Lots of stuff taken appears to have been taken by car booters.

wingingmywaythroughlife · 19/09/2021 20:46

Always give to charity shops. My friend kindly gifted me loads of baby stuff, saved me so much as a struggling lone parent. When I was finished with the items and asked if she'd like them back she told me to sell and we'd split the profit. Funnily enough, when I said I couldn't be doing with that but would happily drop back to her to sell she told me to give them away 🤦🏻‍♀️😂

Wrenna · 19/09/2021 20:53

Yes. It always intrigues me when people actually care what charity gets their things. “Oh, they sell the stuff they get donated, I want them to go to people for free”, etc. I couldn’t care less as long as it’s out of our house!
