Haven't seen the OP around, thread 1 is about to run out and someone asked for a new thread.

Excerpt from the 2020 - 2021 sov grant report, which is good for a (hollow) laugh: "The Covid-19 pandemic, for example, has led to a period of unprecedented change in the life
of the Nation. The continued visibility of The Queen and members of the Royal Family during
the Covid-19 pandemic has provided many people with a sense of continuity and reassurance
at a time when the public has been asked to make fundamental sacrifices and adaptations to their daily lives".

We must be the laughing stock of the entire world.

TheKeatingFive · 22/09/2021 17:01

Given that travel and entertaining was hugely curtailed during Covid - and that’s a big part of what the SG is supposed to fund - shouldn’t they be offering a bit of a rebate?

ChurchofLatterDayPaints · 22/09/2021 17:40

Yes, plus a list of the sacrifices made along with the rest of the nation.

Quite. Yet the royalists insist the monarchy is the envy of many other nations.

It really, really, isn’t.

There is always lots of speculation about if the country as a whole will decide to become a Republic, but less about what happens if an heir to the throne decides to renounce it. I think at somepoint this will happen - the heir to the throne will decide this is all too much trouble and a gilded but caged life. I think at that point a Republic could result, rather than it automatically passing to the next in line as it did with the Queen's father.

Roussette · 22/09/2021 19:19

Maybe George?
Certainly not William

I just can't imagine a teenager in say 5/6 years time not wanting to look into what it all entails

Imagine telling the mustard on the ceiling story and thinking it makes you look good.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 22/09/2021 20:43

Shocking re avoiding covid losses. Imagine thinking they did more than, at the most, giving people a boost on a particular day, while others are actually struggling because of it. As someone outside of the UK, no the monarchy is not a point of envy!

CathyorClaire · 22/09/2021 20:44

Apparently the stains are still there.

Guess the luckless lackey tottering on the ladder to clean them didn't have the right Stain Devil to hand.

Muddywellies10 · 22/09/2021 20:45

Yes @Handsoffstrikesagain I've always thought it is a poisoned chalice!

Knowing that your every move is scrutinised, that the country (well the majority) look to you in times of trouble

Do people actually look to the queen or any of them in times of trouble, though? They seemed spectacularly invisible during the hardest times of the pandemic, and they weren’t particularly missed.

Roussette · 22/09/2021 21:16

Despite being a royalist many moons ago, I have NEVER looked to them in times of trouble.
I have always always known they are so far removed from the common people, they would never be able to understand what ordinary folk go through

Boris in ICU trumped HMQ's Easter message but who could forget Andy flying a kite for public rehab energetically packing cupcakes for NHS workers or Kate's empathy for enforced homeschooling? while frantically getting the nanny to dial in to Thomas's online portal

In times of trouble and uncertainty, most people would seek out a priest or spiritual leader.

Interesting that the Q's spiritual governorship of the CofE has seen its membership decline to a miniscule 1.4% of the UK population.

It's a total pantomime.

ponyexpress22 · 23/09/2021 13:17

How strange that people would seek out the most privileged family in Britain for comfort in a crisis. Shock

@Handsoffstrikesagain

That makes absolutely perfect sense to me.

The MSM spoonfeeds us a diet of all the best bits of royalty.
We know no different

Blossomtoes · 23/09/2021 17:59

The article basically said we are all going to have a breakdown when the Queen dies because she’s been there for the majority of all of our lives.

There’s a lot in that. It’s very likely that there will be some kind of national trauma when she goes. Like 1997 on steroids.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/09/2021 18:06

I agree many will be upset, but let's hope it doesn't turn into the emotional incontinence we saw when Diana went

I got flamed for saying it at the time - though many have come to a similar view since - but parts of that were downright embarrassing

Blossomtoes · 23/09/2021 18:19

They certainly were. The hysteria was dreadful.

Diana's death was tragedy and I still feel very sad when I see footage of her funeral. I won't feel the same about the Queen. She's very old.
