I know this has been done before, and I’ve read many stories, but I need more! Please tell me your creepy stories!

Mine is

Just over 10 years ago, I got pregnant and had a missed miscarriage, and went to hospital to have the D&C to have the baby removed. Exactly a year to the day after the procedure, I woke in the middle of the night. In my half asleep state, I felt like something was watching me, right next to my head, and I moved. Then suddenly, it felt like a rush of wind went over my face and down my body to my feet. It properly woke me up and I went cold. I turned on the light to see if there was anything in my room, nothing was there. Didn’t have any drinks or anything upstairs, no idea what it could have been. But it has always been a comfort to me thinking that it was my baby saying they were ok.

@Jevarakh

About ten years ago I was doing some contract work in a new suite of offices in Chester. Chester was founded, as you may know, as a Roman fort. It was one of the largest Roman fortresses and civilian settlements in the country. There are important pieces of Roman architecture in and around the city such as the Minerva shrine in Edgar’s Field park and the Amphitheatre just outside the walls. You can see an original Roman hypocaust in the basement of Spud-U-Like on Bridge Street. Roman remains can still, to this day, be found in Chester, particularly in the basements of buildings. This has some bearing on what happened, because the offices where I was working was more or less certainly built on top of some of those Roman remains - it’s pretty hard to avoid them, in Chester.

One night a week or so ago, I decided to stay late to finish some work. I was alone in the big open-plan office, on the fifth floor, with nothing but orange-tinted darkness to be seen outside the windows. In the middle of the room was a double row of metal filing cabinets, about 4 feet tall. I was working at a terminal at the other end of the room, on a desk up against the wall so my back was to the room and the windows and filing cabinets were some way off to my left.

I got quite into my work and oblivious of my surroundings, as you do, but at about half 7, a sudden sound made me jump out of my skin. It came from the direction of the filing cabinets. A sharp metallic clang, repeated three times in quick succession, as though someone had struck the cabinets with something metallic. This startled me, but it only happened once so I put it down to 'building sound' and set to work again.

About ten minutes later the sound came again. Bang-bang-bang! Then again - louder and more insistent. BANG BANG BANG! I literally felt my blood run cold, as no way could this sound be attributed to any settling or shifting building noise. These cabinets were only 4 foot high so if there was someone there I'd have been able to see them... unless they were a midget or a child... or were bending down in order to stay out of sight...

The sound came again. BANG BANG! And again, and again, regular now like a drum-beat. I hurriedly shut down the terminal I was working on and got ready to leg it - no way was I going to investigate - when the sound abruptly ceased.

Then, in the sudden silence, a figure rose up from behind the front row of filing cabinets.

At this point I felt the most scared I had ever been in my entire life. I literally could not move.

This figure appeared to be the outline of a man - totally black, like a shadow come to life. I could only see the torso, head and shoulders as it was behind the filing cabinets, but as I watched it walked forwards THROUGH THE CABINETS and marched down the office towards me.

I couldn't even scream as the spectre drew nearer. It was very definitely the outline of a man, with striding legs, swinging arms and an odd-shaped head - it looked like it was wearing a helmet. In one arm the figure appeared to be carrying something long and pointed, almost a metre in length and about two inches wide. And as it came nearer to I, I noticed the weirdest thing of all about the apparition. I noticed that it wasn't solid at all.

It was composed of tiny black spheres about the size of a marble, arranged in the three-dimensional shape of a man.

I remember seeing the hand of this shape, the fingers opening and closing as it marched closer and closer, the fingers made of individual black marbles...

It was coming straight for me but I still couldn’t move. And, as it passed by me, it paused - AND TURNED TO LOOK STRAIGHT AT ME with its featureless ‘face’ of tiny black spheres. As though it had just noticed me. And then it thrust the object in its hand straight into my stomach.

I looked down to see the sword, or blade, or whatever it was, made up of little black marbles, slide into my body just above my belly-button. It didn’t hurt. It was a strange, satisfying, almost euphoric feeling, like you get when you sink into a hot bath, or scratch an itch. It spread out from my guts over my whole body, a tingling wave of almost unbearable, tickling torment. Then there was this intense, rushing feeling, as if I was falling from a great height, and then I must have fainted.

I came to some time later, clutching something in my right hand. Looking at my watch, I saw that hours had passed, it was now 10 pm. Remembering the shadow figure I leapt up, my left hand probing my stomach. There was no blood, no wound, nothing. No indication that anything had happened. And then came the most terrifying thing of all. A deep, resonant voice spoke, quite distinctly, into my left ear from over my shoulder. It said, ‘Quis est? Amicus vel hostis?’

I can’t recall clearly exactly what happened in the moments after I heard this challenge. I only recall flashes of memory; screaming and running, bashing through doors and clattering down stairs. I eventually came to my senses in the lobby, panting and sweating, glaring around in confused, terrified panic. Two security guards were approaching me making calming gestures and saying, ‘put the weapon down, sir.’ I glanced for the first time at the object I’d picked up from the office floor before I’d fled the office. It was (I found out later when describing it to a local historian) a gladius; a Roman sword - the primary weapon of a Roman footsoldier. Even as I stared at it, the blade transformed into a multitude of black spheres and a jolt like an electric shock ran from the handle of the weapon through my hand and up my arm. I let it go and it fell to the floor, the black spheres rolling in all directions before vanishing completely.

The security guards say they saw none of this, and that I took the sword with me when I left, but I swear it’s true. In any case, there is no trace of the sword anywhere in my hotel room, or the office, after the security guards searched for it. I bet though, if you look in the basement of the office block, you’ll find an ancient Roman relic, that of a gladius.

I refused to go back to the office, in fact refused point blank to even go back into the building, and lost the contract.

Interesting first post.

Also, do you know much Latin? I find it odd that you could understand what he said. If someone said something to me in a language I didn’t understand I wouldn’t be able to recall every single word and spell it correctly.

Was walking home from a friend's one night and was about 4 houses away from my house, when a floaty white wispy shape crossed over the road and disappeared into next door neighbours house. Too be honest I just thought it smoke from somewhere at the time though I did jump into bed rather quick. My mum woke me next day after a bit of a lay in, and told me the lady next door had died during the night.

Patbutchersarrow · 19/09/2021 15:06

@EastWestWhosBest the story has been told on a previous similar thread I remember it, really spooky! it does sound made up but it still scared me Blush so this poster must have copied it from that thread if it's their first post.

EKGEMS · 19/09/2021 15:11

@Downunderduchess So sorry to scare you! Just proves you've gotta be aware of yourself and others anyplace and anytime.

OohThatCat · 19/09/2021 15:13

I love supernatural stuff! None of it has ever happened to me, sadly. I'd love to meet a ghost!

I have a vivid memory (was much more vivid when I was a kid) of holding on to the iron fencing surrounding the steps of the market cross in my hometown and feeling annoyed because I wanted to sit on the steps. The iron fencing surrounded the whole thing, so you couldn't.

I read a recently published history book on my hometown when I was a bit older and saw picture of the market cross, exactly as I'd remembered it with the railings, except the railings had been removed in 1900 or thereabouts. Such a bizarre memory to me, it felt so real and I was so surprised when I saw that picture and the date they were removed. And what's weirder is I feel like I was a little boy in the memory, and not a girl. Probably some rational explanation for it though!

This was about 20-25 years ago, at the time I lived in a terraced town house (row of 4) in a cul de sac. There was a lamp post outside. I had lived there quite a number of years and it was very quiet. Because we were at the end of the cul de sac people would not walk there, there was no passing traffic, it was just people who lived there who perhaps may have been outside. The house next door to me was let out to students, and because there was a big university in the town a lot of the students were overseas students. On the occasion I am talking about they were Japanese.

One night about 3.00am my boyfriend at the time and I were woken up by a couple of men arguing outside by the lamp post. The bedroom window was just above the lamp post outside so we sat up in bed and listened for a while. It sounded like one English speaking person and another person speaking a different language, I assumed at the time it was Japanese and one of the students from next door. The English person sounded very calm and soothing but the Japanese person was ranting and raving - it was so long ago now I can't remember what was said exactly but the English person was doing a lot of placating and trying to calm the other person down. It didn't sound violent as such - just like one was ranting and the other was trying to calm the situation. Not only were the languages different but the tone, pitch etc between the two voices was completely different. Eventually, it sounded like they were started to move away from the lamp post.

I admit I was really scared - it was such a weird altercation to be going on in our sleepy little cul de sac in a quiet village. Eventually, whilst they were still arguing we looked out of the window, there was one person walking down the road. He was arguing with himself - he turned round to look back towards my house and his face was completely blank/white. I couldn't distinguish any features. It was so odd. From his demeanor, clothing etc I could tell he was a young adult. Maybe early 20's.

A lot of the houses heard it also because lots of peoples lights were on - I vaguely remember calling the police (I thought the person was having some sort of mental health crisis and would need help) and they said it had already been reported. I watched him wonder off down the street onto the main road. I can only hope he was ok.

Winniewonka · 19/09/2021 15:34

This happened many years ago, more of a mystery but still a bit creepy. I worked in an office along side five other people and we sat at three large desks facing each other. Our new boss was different in that he had quite long hair in a ponytail and long wispy beard, in his fifties but still wore a suit to work. We always thought he looked like a wizard. He was into all sorts of alternative stuff including astral projection. You would think with this lifestyle he would be quite easy going but wasn't and could be quite stern.
He had a tiny office within our office. It had a desk, filing cabinet, small bookcase with his books on subjects including astral projection and two chairs including his own. The building was built in the 1870s and still had large sash windows which were difficult and noisy to open. His office door was clear half glass so that he could keep an eye on us but it meant he also was always in view.
One winter afternoon, he called me into his office to discuss some orders he wanted me to get on with. About 20 minutes later I knocked on his door to ask a question and I could see it was empty.
I ask the typist who sat directly in front of the door had she seen him leave the office and she said No, in fact no one had. I thought I'll wait as he may have nipped to the Gents. Fifteen minutes later, no sign. It was really peculiar, his desk looked like he had been working (pre computers), the window was closed but no had seen him leave.
We opened his door in case he had collapsed but couldn't see anything so every one went back to their desks. About ten minutes later, a colleague said "You're not going to believe this, he's sat at his desk".
But he hadn't passed anyone to go back in there !
We decided it must have been astral projection! Only logical explanations are he went out and came back in through ground floor window but why would he do that?
Or he had passed out and was wedged between his desk and the wall (he was quite small)

Very, very strange and he wasn't the type of person you could ask. I didn't go back to ask my question as I had figured it out and felt a bit unnerved by what had happened.

amter · 19/09/2021 15:53

Not sure if this is creepy, but a PP made me think others may find this interesting, I still can't explain it.

I conceived DD 3 in summer 2019, due date March 2020. I had been unable to breastfeed my first 2 children (blood loss/low supply) but I remember sitting on the sofa at home just after finding out I was pregnant and the thoughts came to me that there was going to be a big crisis when DD was due to be born. I needed to be able to breastfeed her because I couldn't rely on being able to get milk.

Come March 2020 and we established breastfeeding on the first day, a couple of days later lockdown happened and there was no way I could get my hands on baby formula if I had needed it as were in the middle of nowhere and deliveries were impossible to get. I had bought lots of formula and stored it just in case which I was able to donate.

All very odd, but I knew the whole pregnancy that something big was going to happen when DD3 was born.

SpeckledlyHen · 19/09/2021 15:55

@Winniewonka - that's really freaky..

ShaneTheThird · 19/09/2021 15:58

The fake Dr story is terrifying!

RickJames · 19/09/2021 16:00

It's not really creepy but we find we get activity everytime we renovate our house. Usually just presences or a cloud of perfume. When we first moved in it was worse. We'd suddenly find a random photo of one of the previous residents or stuff would get moved to funny places.

We renovated our son's room in June and he came crying to our room at about 10pm, he'd been reading with the lamp on and he said a big black man appeared next to his bed. He meant black figure, not a BAME man. He described it very clearly and was shaking in terror (he's 11 and not usually dramatic) I tucked him in with us and the next day I cut loads of sage and distributed it around the room and we both asked the figure to please not visit because it was frightening.

I mostly did this to comfort my son but the figure has not returned! I have no idea whether it was real or not. I get those wierd sleep paralysis episodes fairly regularly so maybe DS has inherited it and it was just that.

My mum is the most un-woo person ever and she's always getting funny things happening. Last year she was watching TV and her glass of wine suddenly shattered sending the red wine up to the ceiling but not over the furniture (she had to repaint the ceiling, I saw the stain) she found out the next day a friend had died at that exact moment. She knew the time because the news was just starting.

I love all these stories even though I'm not really a believer! There's so much we don't understand that I guess it's possible Smile

ShaneTheThird · 19/09/2021 16:09

A few months ago I had another case of sleep paralysis which I haven't suffered with in a few years. Every time it's always a small strange little creature climbing on top of me. Well, about 3 months ago me and dp went to bed and he fell asleep. I fell asleep then woke up with sleep paralysis. I couldn't move but my eyes were open and I could see my bedroom around me and dp snoring next to me. I was watching my cats run around like mad things and suddenly I saw four cats not the three we have. I started to try and move to shop this rogue cat away when it turned to look at me and stood up on its back legs and began to transform into this weird little creature about 2.5/3foot tall. Eventfully I snapped out of it and was able to move again. I was a bit freaked out by the weirdness but knew it was just my mind so I went to the bathroom and felt like I was being watched. When I got back to bed I saw the weird creature again in the doorway where the cheeky bastard waved at me and vanished. The next day do woke up and told me all about this weird dream he had where a strange cat had gotten into the house and he didn't know what to do. Needless to say I'm very cautious that no local strays get into our house Grin

Mmmmdanone · 19/09/2021 16:12

I was lying on bed one night - I lived alone at this point, and heard 3 loud knocks on my bedroom door. I was half asleep but it woke me up obviously! Too scared to move or open the door I just lay there awake for the rest of the night, convincing myself it had been my imagination. It probably was. I've since had what I assume are other " auditory hallcinations", like someone whispering my name close to my ear. Always when I'm almost asleep, so must be something about that very relaxed state but it's creepy!

wishful2012 · 19/09/2021 16:19

When I was a child my great uncle passed, who I had never met. My Gran, mum and myself when to visit my great aunt. Not long after arriving I was doubled over with stomach craps, went and lay down on one of the beds, when we left the house so did the pain. Mum still won’t talk about 😂

Iwantcauliflowercheese · 19/09/2021 16:20

I bought a Victorian house from an old lady who had to go into a home because of dementia. All the internal doors had a lock, but there were no keys. They were an attractive original feature. I'd lived there a few years and came down in the morning to find I was locked out of my front room. I could see that it looked as if a key had been used to lock it. My children were equally baffled and we had to get the lock sawn through to get into the room. I found out later that day that the old lady had died that night.

SecretWitch · 19/09/2021 16:22

My six yr old son sighed one day and said “ I really miss my mum”. I laughed and said “ I’m right here!”. He looked very serious as he explained he missed his other the mum, the one he had in California. He told me they both died in an auto accident. He said he flew up to the sky and then picked me to be his new mother..

Weirdly, he adores California, visited the state several times before deciding to attend college there.

littlepeas · 19/09/2021 16:27

My absolute favourite one of these is the alcove story - that was properly creepy.

Anything that’s too dramatic like the Roman soldier one upthread or the Savernake Forest story always ring a bit false to me. It’s the little encounters that are spookiest.

Doctor one is most terrifying on this thread!

MrsR87 · 19/09/2021 16:28

Not spooky but certainly scary…

I was 16 and on my way home from the youth club at the vicarage. This was a quick ten minute walk but involved a very dark path and it was a dark night.

As I turned into the path (had walked down there a million times before) I heard footsteps behind me. I turned to see a man about 30 seconds behind me. I sped up slightly and so did he so I sped up again and so did he. I started to feel a bit panicked so I called my dad…luckily it was the early days of mobiles and I had my Nokia brick with me and actually had some credit. I was only two mins away from home so I spoke to my dad and said loudly something along the lines of “hey dad, I’m almost at the end of the path, are you there to meet me yet?” He wasn’t supposed to meet me at all but he said “on my way” and ran from home to the path. As soon as my dad came into view, the man behind me disappeared, like he just went into the bushes or something.

I’ll never know whether the man was harmless or not but there was a period of sexual assaults in the area at the time so I’ll be forever grateful that my dad was home and picked up the phone!

littlepeas · 19/09/2021 16:28

Alcove was on a different thread, not this one.

thegreylady · 19/09/2021 16:32

When I was a child I slept in a twin bed in my mum’s room. Dad was disabled and slept downstairs. Often, at night, I would see a circle of ligh about the size of a ping pong ball on the wardrobe door opposite my bed. It fascinated me and I used to get out of bed and put my hand over the light. The light didn’t shine on the back of my hand and if I peeped under my hand it was still there. I mentioned it to mum and asked if she had seen it and she said she had but it was ‘nothing’. I still haven’t a clue what it could have been.

Once when I was 14 me and my friend were out up to no good one night. It was really dark and we decided to cut through a long alleyway to get to her house. We knew no one would know as she was home alone that night anyway so we weren't bothered how late we were. Anyway we cut through this alleyway and half way down it there's a stone block. This night there happened to be someone sat on the block. It was a really dark night, no street lights but whoever was sat in the middle of the alley at gone midnight were all in black. Everything was black, couldn't make out any features but it was definitely a tall man. For some reason I got really close and just started laughing uncontrollably. I couldn't walk away or anything all I could do was stand next to this person and laugh. Maybe it was a fear reaction but it was really odd. My friend had the opposite reaction and she started crying hysterically trying to drag me away. After about a minute I did snap out of it and we both ran back the way we had come because my friend rightly refused to go past this man who never once even looked at us just sat dead still.

I agree. It’s the mundane stories that are the creepiest in my opinion. The alcove story, on a previous thread, was great. And I love the newspaper in the bathroom story on this one.
RiotAtTheRodeo · 19/09/2021 16:48

What was the alcove story?

Jevarakh · 19/09/2021 16:52

BUSTED!

It's a short story I wrote.

Read it at a literature festival one year, in a cemetery at night.

Very effective it was too.
