Why are TV ads so irritating?

lockdownmadnessdotcom · 17/09/2021 15:10

The perfumes thread made me think of it, because the ads for the Marc Jacobs perfumes are so irritating eg

Daisy Daisy Daisy Daisy

I'm so perfect perfect perfect perfect

And then the British Gas ads with the really loud irritating music

and the really irritating Just Eat jingle.

AAAAAGGGHHHH.

Or am I just a grumpy old woman? I know they're probably trying to be down with the kids, but kids don't watch linear TV anymore.

all of the above. They don't seem much better with the sound off either. best way is to record commercial channels and skip through. That saves a lot of time too

Verisure adverts were I in the market for this type of product it would be as the bottom of my list, so smug. The screechy canadian woman in the wowchers adverts, I've unsubscribed to their website now! All the ones in which it's considered quite acceptable and funny for women to belittle men, eg the current Amazon Prime ad and the old Malteser one where it's 'funny' that two women embarrass a young man by flashing their boos at his, I find the hypocrisy of so called sexual equality nauseating.
tigger1001 · 20/09/2021 13:31

@crj123

That shampoo one where the woman whispers "over 40" like it's shameful. It makes me want to throw things at the telly
Me too.

What that advert is trying to say is peri menopausal but is also buying into the media message that being peri menopausal or menopausal is shameful and embarrassing and shouldn't be talked about.

That one for me, really missed the mark. It's not annoying. It's insulting.

MrsScrubbingbrush · 20/09/2021 13:42

You can't beat Steve Frost & Mark Arden in the laundrette with the Nick Kamen lookalike

" I bet he drinks Carling Black Label"
" Nah, he doesn't was his underpants"

@lockdownmadnessdotcom
Talking of British Gas their standards have slipped since the ‘Creature Comforts’ ads, they were lovely

JudgeJ · 20/09/2021 13:52

Second Verisure but for me its the one with 2 smug couples having dinner

I can't be the only person who hopes that the neighbour who has been burgled through the garden is the woman in the red frock from the first advert! That would indeed be 'very reassuring'!

JudgeJ · 20/09/2021 13:59

@ssd

Agree with everything here

Also the celebs doing advertising now...like Beckham advertising whiskey...we shout at the telly 'dont you have enough fucking money '

Sean Bean reduced to doing a tea advert, what would Sharpe say about that.
Pinky1952 · 20/09/2021 14:04

Most ads irritate me what with loud music and people who can't talk properly. The one that really irritates me at the moment is that stupid Domino's one with the yodelling. Also the one where a demented woman screams NO NAPPIES. Who thinks all this crap up?

Sonofabiscuit · 20/09/2021 14:48

Can someone please ,please get rid of the meerkats.

I do like the birds eye witch ad ,well at mo I do ,give it another week and may not .
Also Brad Pitt in coffee ad ,all I kept thinking was get a bloody haircut .

MyCatEatsPrawnCrackers · 20/09/2021 14:55

@WoozySnoozy

Those harirbo ones where the adults have kids voices
I love those!

PP have said that irritating ads work because you remember them but this isn't true for me because I can't remember what product is being advertised. I can only remember wanting to punch the screen.

Mummylovesmonkeys · 20/09/2021 17:38

@Quickchangeartiste

The one where the hairdresser takes cards and everyone goes ‘oooooooo’ with ghastly screwed up faces, is my current hatred, but there are a lot of others - funeral plans, life assurance , equity release… I mean, when can we get something clever, like Martians making mashed potatoes ( ages me I know…)
I have to turn this one over/off when it comes on - it makes my flesh crawl.

And the 'Spray - white - dung' one. Can't hear anything else now.

And Helena Bonham Carter is advertising something too. Does she really need the cash? Times are obviously hard for celebs!

@lockdownmadnessdotcom
Yes ! In Her slippers then eats the ornamental pineapple which is actually cake
Can’t for the life of me remember what is being advertised though 😂

BeaucoupFish · 20/09/2021 19:25

@lockdownmadnessdotcom
Sofas !

BeaucoupFish · 20/09/2021 19:28

Now
This is a Classic

Those cheekbones !
(Peter Murphy from Bauhaus for the young readers)

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/09/2021 19:33

Okay, if we're going for real golden oldies, this still makes me chuckle
They wouldn't get away with it these days though ...

BeaucoupFish · 20/09/2021 19:46

@Puzzledandpissedoff
Hilarious 😂 that’s one hell of a syrup
Reminds me of Leonard Rossiter and Joan Collins Campari they were funny

This is possibly evolving into ‘Classic Ads’ but really it’s just demonstrating how awful they’ have become in recent years

ozymandiusking · 20/09/2021 19:48

Yes, please kill the merecats! I hate the latest clothing M & S advert.
But, I love the three lady dancing toads, they did an excellent job training them ! Totally Money.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/09/2021 23:10

Another vote for "kill the meercats" - there's only so much mileage to be got out of the blasted things, and the tank ran dry ages ago

And since we seem to have moved onto "classic ads" ... go on then ... Grin

PetticoatSoldier · 21/09/2021 00:59

'Perf with Surf'

It still astounds me that multiple people signed off on that. I would wash my clothes in a fucking puddle rather than buy Surf after that.

I do enjoy the odd inappropriate Irn Bru ad though! 🤣

Namebunny · 21/09/2021 01:17

Ahh, classic ads, those were the days. We actually used to enjoy watching them and the idea was that you would get a warm feeling about the product and obviously then buy it. I studied advertising wayyyy back and we all dreamt of creating clever, funny ads. Then as a pp said, budgets got slashed and the ironic ( and cheap) man with a big bum and stilletoes, and endless supposedly cool crap. I also think it’s because in the old days I think admen came from all sorts of backgrounds and now it seems that everyone is ‘diverse’ within a very narrow idea of what ‘diverse’ is.
Penelope Keith with the Parker pen ad. Joan Collins martini. For mash get smash spacemen. Happy days!

derxa · 21/09/2021 07:19
Gregor Fisher's hamlet ads were funny too
Puzzledandpissedoff · 21/09/2021 19:22

Bet you never improved on the billboards for London Underground Wink

Just four words, but still one of the cleverest slogans I've ever seen ...

Less bread
No jam

Puzzledandpissedoff · 21/09/2021 19:24

Yes, Derxa, I liked Gregor Fisher too Grin
