Why are TV ads so irritating?

135 replies

lockdownmadnessdotcom · 17/09/2021 15:10

The perfumes thread made me think of it, because the ads for the Marc Jacobs perfumes are so irritating eg

Daisy Daisy Daisy Daisy

I'm so perfect perfect perfect perfect

And then the British Gas ads with the really loud irritating music

and the really irritating Just Eat jingle.

AAAAAGGGHHHH.

Or am I just a grumpy old woman? I know they're probably trying to be down with the kids, but kids don't watch linear TV anymore.

Natalie Portman went right down in my estimation after doing that awful Dior advert with the even more hideous song screeched in the background. Instant mute and I won't ever buy Dior again, that ad certainly worked against me ever rushing out to get the perfume.

Although I'm sure she laughs all the way to the bank ...Hmm

BeaucoupFish · 18/09/2021 12:48

I normally manage to avoid them using streaming services (even paid for Now Boost to get rid ) as all make me irrationally angry
But my current interest in Grand designs on All4 means I’m subjected to them
The worst though is that oooooooh card reader one it’s so exceptionally awful 🤬🤬🤬

BeaucoupFish · 18/09/2021 12:51

@ProfYaffle
It’s very gothic and obviously created by a talented artistic person not like today’s disposable piffle

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 18/09/2021 12:55

Adverts today are utterly annoying and.forgettable. How many 'classics' will we remember in 20 years?
Bring back the 70s/80a when advertisers gave a shit.

Puffinhead · 18/09/2021 13:18

@Justcallmebebes

The Go Compare man i could cheerfully kill. The environment kids one gives me the rage but i still love the meerkats.

Why are perfume ads so weird nowadays? They used to be cutting edge and sexy but now just naff

I totally agree with you about Go Compare. Why have the adverts become more about him than the actual company itself? It’s weird.

I generally mute adverts or watch on a delay start so I can fast forward them, they drive me nutty.

BeaucoupFish · 18/09/2021 13:20

@TakemedowntoPotatoCity
I would love to be a fly in the wall when these marketing ‘experts’ are having their ‘creative’ meetings..l imagine this sort of thing ….
‘Oh I know let’s have people yodelling from balconies - I mean yay- everyone loves yodelling don’t they’
🤬🤬

FrankButchersDickieBow · 18/09/2021 13:46

The yodelling domino pizza cunts 😤😤😡😡

BeaucoupFish · 18/09/2021 14:08

@FrankButchersDickieBow
Since you put it like that YES 😂😂😂
I started a thread on AIBU yesterday about the smart meter one saving 70 million trees - I’m genuinely aggrieved about this and I really want to take this claim further and ask them to provide me with some legitimate data to prove how we can save all these tress if we all had a smart meter -surely they need to back up these claims or are they allowed to just tell lies to us and hope that we are all so gullible we would believe it ?

BeaucoupFish · 18/09/2021 14:10

And another thing…
What about when they put in writing at the End of (usually) beauty ads. ‘ 70% of 198 testers agreed’
They can’t say 35% because it doesn’t look so good I assume
So annoying

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/09/2021 14:36

I hate the ones like Verisure. The husband is a dick

No bloody empathy either .
No "OMG poor Sarah and Mike" just "that could've been us" ,

FrankButchersDickieBow · 18/09/2021 14:48

Verisure 'very reassuring'. Very fucking annoying actually.

Horst · 18/09/2021 14:51

Another reason why we candles the tv license and got rid of live tv. No adverts on Netflix or prime Grin

No more muuuuummmmmm I wantttttttt thatttttt

Horst · 18/09/2021 14:55

Cancelled all though I do like a nice candle.

ImprobablePuffin · 18/09/2021 14:56

I can't stand ANY adverts they're all so irritating!
I tried reading through the thread but just found myself getting angry even reading about all the annoying ads.

FrankOrTheBeans · 18/09/2021 15:07

The only advert I actually like is the tortoise on skates one.

All the others are intolerable to say the least.

BeaucoupFish · 18/09/2021 23:13

This ad is good I think, you do sometimes get a Pearl…

LadyCatStark · 18/09/2021 23:57

I think a lot of the time the ad makers have just run out of ideas to be fair. There’s only so many different ways to advertise the same thing!

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 19/09/2021 00:16

But 70% of 198 isn’t 35%? It’s around 140 people? (Misses point of thread).

Snoozer11 · 19/09/2021 00:49

@Strugglingtodomybest

The climate pledge one, with all the super irritating kids, makes me want to destroy the environment just to kill them off in the process.

I honestly don't have the words to describe how much it irritates me. "It's a thing you know?" Argh!

"What's it going to take for you to do something?"

Ermm, well I've spent the last 20 years separating my waste into glass, paper and plastic. I don't drive so rely on public transport. I pay my own bills so I don't waste water, gas or electricity. I don't buy cheap fast fashion, don't have the latest phone and rarely fly. I make sure my pension doesn't invest in damaging industries and I make sure I eat sustainably.

But yeah, it's not like kids rely on lifts everywhere, take twenty minute showers, demand the newest iPhone for Christmas, visit MacDonalds etc etc. They really understand environmental issues better than the moronic adults.

"I'm only six, you figure it out!"
"Sustainable farming.. it's a thing now!"

And to top it all off, the advert is funded by Amazon. The company that contributes god knows how much carbon by driving 200 miles to deliver a toaster.

BeaucoupFish · 19/09/2021 09:09

@ColdTattyWaitingForSummer
Sorry ! 🥵

thetemptationofchocolate · 19/09/2021 13:54

Remember this ad? Poor Graham.

And now there is this ad, not for the same thing but poor Graham again (at 1.15)

Who'd want to be Graham?

myphonekeepswanderingoff · 19/09/2021 14:02

The Verisure advert where the woman tells her husband over the phone that the next door neighbours were burgled during the night. He says 'That could have been us". Not even asked how the neighbours are after such a traumatising event.... Selfish pair

BeaucoupFish · 20/09/2021 12:37

@thetemptationofchocolate

Aaaaaw 😢 was really hoping they had got a bungalow at the end
That’s actually a great advert I think….
Circle of Life message I suppose and avoiding overly sentimental music as well.

pinkgin85 · 20/09/2021 13:09

I hate them all but I actually really like the new Squarespace one with snowy white, it's so clever and creative

TinnedPotatoesRock · 20/09/2021 13:16

I love the oooooooooooo one, especially the woman in the orange top lol.

I hate the one with the kids singing "no no no-no no, there's no sugar" to the tune of 2 Unlimited - think it's for yogurt. Just no fucking no. Full stop
