Why are TV ads so irritating?

lockdownmadnessdotcom · 17/09/2021 15:10

The perfumes thread made me think of it, because the ads for the Marc Jacobs perfumes are so irritating eg

Daisy Daisy Daisy Daisy

I'm so perfect perfect perfect perfect

And then the British Gas ads with the really loud irritating music

and the really irritating Just Eat jingle.

AAAAAGGGHHHH.

Or am I just a grumpy old woman? I know they're probably trying to be down with the kids, but kids don't watch linear TV anymore.

“it's June, Dad"... 🗡🗡🗡 😱

Asortofreddishamber · 17/09/2021 17:43

I've always detested the moonpig adverts. Dressing up what is mostly tacky, cheap cards. Yet they've been going for 15 years. I remember once when I had bought a really lovely card for someone's leaving do and a really stupid (long timer) woman I worked with said - apparently because I'd bothered to walk to a shop and not buy it on the internet - "why didn't you just buy it from moonpig?". It was 2009 and the personalised thing had just caught on with putting people's face and name 9n th3 card in a mock OK magazine/ newspaper style. It had been done already. No imagination. Whatsoever.

Love this thread.
I hate the Flash adverts , the songs are irritating enough but the STATE of the kitchens and bathrooms they show.
Kitchen floors look like a rugby team has walked in there with their boots on after a muddy game.
And the one wipe and its sparkling clean, no rubbing, scrubbing.... yeah right, your product ain't that good.
Second Verisure but for me its the one with 2 smug couples having dinner Angry

ProfYaffle · 17/09/2021 17:54

The one where the daughter is talking about the cost of Mum's funeral and how she's planning on cremating her on the cheap - while her Mother's sat RIGHT THERE smiling beatifically and having no agency in the conversation Confused

I have a theory that advertising these days is about trying to grab attention with noise and colour in as short a time as possible. They've forgotten about trying to engage and interest the audience. Remember the days when the new 501/Gold Blend ad would come out and we'll all make a point of watching it because we were interested?

okletsdothis · 17/09/2021 18:44

The laughing McDonalds advert makes me want to murder someone, I have to lunge for the remote as soon as I hear it.

That and any advert that involves whistling Angry

WoozySnoozy · 17/09/2021 18:48

Those harirbo ones where the adults have kids voices

RobertaFirmino · 17/09/2021 21:01

The Funding Circle ad with that baby singing along, creepy as fuck.

Bigassbeebuzzbuzz · 17/09/2021 21:21

There was a really annoying TUI one a few years ago that almost had me cancelling my holiday with them.
Does anyone find adverts really loud compared to programs?
I have to turn my tv down every time they come on. Angry

3beesinmybonnet · 17/09/2021 21:41

Any ad that uses a bland wishy washy version of a classic tune. Ie The Carpenters We've Only Just Begun as heard on what I think is the Lloyds Bank ad. Tbf the bland version could be just as famous but at my age I'm slightly out of touch. Surely a bank can afford the original ? Just irritating.

Also when they use a well known classical tune and chop bits out of it to make it fit the ad. Like the nappy ad that mangles I think The Thieving Magpie. Grrr!

BananaRama990 · 17/09/2021 22:04

The Go Compare one where they bite into cupcakes at the end.
As soon as I see it come on I have to mute the TV or I would smash it. I can't even look at it with the opera singer's stupid face!!!

Dita73 · 17/09/2021 22:47

The Nationwide ones are doing my crust in. For several years now they’ve had people reciting crap poetry or singing bad songs. There was one a few years ago with two sisters and a keyboard and I swear it nearly tipped me over the edge

MillicentMargaretAmanda · 17/09/2021 22:52

I second the terrible the climate change one... those patronising tweens and teens do not encourage me to want to save the planet for their benefit!!.

movpov · 17/09/2021 23:06

Hardly ever watch programmes when they're actually on now as the ads give me an irrational rage so I record & fast forward at the ads, if that's not possible the tv goes on mute the minute the ads appear. Current most irritating is the Cornetto one with a variety of people crashing through the house, closely followed by 2 featuring Eammon Holmes, that equity release one encouraging people to 'reopen the bank of mum & dad', and that one with Ruth inviting him to go for a walk.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 17/09/2021 23:10

Here you go, @70isaLimitNotaTarget ... it was for Money Supermarket (and yes it gives me the creeps)

BlueBellsArePretty · 17/09/2021 23:30

The Lenorv advert where three random people are rolling about a bed and excitedly sniffing the sheets exclaiming 'what is it?' and 'mine!' Urrgh

JustWorriedSick · 17/09/2021 23:36

Verisure

I see you've had an alarm fitted..

I see you've had a frontal lobotomy

The new “perfect’ one is a million times worse 🤬
BeaucoupFish · 17/09/2021 23:40

All ads are shit….apart from this one

pleasesendthequoteffs · 18/09/2021 00:46

Perfect by Marc Jacobs is a million times more annoying than the Daisy one (which was also annoying).

I HATE the Loaf advert. The guy doing the voiceover (I think he's the company founder) just sounds so fucking dull. 'cup of tea and a slice of cake' FUCK OFF.

The only good advert right now is the Avanti trains rollerblading tortoise one. I love his face. I pause what I'm doing to watch it and get annoyed if they use the shorter version.

PurpleSapphire · 18/09/2021 04:34

The climate change one, disrespectful little brats Grin
Daisy daisy daisy daisy..makes me want to punch the screen.
The "ooooOOOOOooooooooo" one.
Any ad that uses a well known song that isn't quite the song, for example the one that sounds like it's going to be George Michael's "freedom" but just keeps repeating the same bit (think it's for some beauty or hair product)..I don't know why but it makes me unreasonably aggressive!!

felulageller · 18/09/2021 05:57

It's not like the old days...

The red car and the blue car had a race...

cherrytree63 · 18/09/2021 06:15

The climate change ad makes me want to throw my recycling box at those kids.
I hardly ever watch TV live so escape most of the ads except when I have the radio on.

HungryHippo11 · 18/09/2021 06:23

I haven't watched adverts on TV for ages. We go for Netflix or iplayer, so much better!

However I do listen to the radio and the ads on there are even worse. Fake obviously scripted conversations that nobody would even have in real life. And recently all the adverts I've been hearing are for pet cremation / funeral plans / in home carers. I must be listening to the wrong station, but its very bleak.

ProfYaffle · 18/09/2021 06:25

@BeaucoupFish - Granted that's a classic but what about this?
