Does wearing a signet ring mean you're posh

So I've got feelings for one of my colleagues and I was speaking to my friend and mentioned how he wears a signet ring. Friend said I bet he's posh. It this true? I admit I don't really know anyone else in my life who wears one but I just wonder whether it's common to wear one. By the way there's nothing wrong with being posh, I'm not bothered if they are or they are not.

I wear one but it's a family heirloom. I'm not posh, just quite sentimental.

TwinsandTrifle · 16/09/2021 14:14

A bunch of primary school girls were not wearing signet rings.

All this thread is demonstrating is how many people have no idea what a signet ring actually is. I'm amazed.

The most common error appears to be thinking they are sovereign rings. (Hence the "pa ha ha, you mean chavvy" which is a little ironic to be laughing at someone when you've the item wrong.) And a few people where I'm stumped as to what they've confused them with, but it's definitely not a signet ring they're thinking of.

My grandad wedding ring was a signet ring, he was about as working class as you can get. My mum wears it now.

snowballer · 16/09/2021 14:17

As some others have said - a ring with a family crest on is a signet ring. They were used to stamp the wax seal on an envelope. Family crests are recorded on a list somewhere, can't remember where, but jewellers who make these (eg there's one in the Burlington Arcade in Piccadilly) have access to them all.

A ring with a big round coin like thing stuck on is a sovereign ring and quite a different thing.

The "signet rings" you can buy in Argos which are ether blank or you have your initials engraved on are also very different and would be more aligned with the sovereign rings tbh if we're getting into the nitty gritty of U and non U.

TinnedPotatoesRock · 16/09/2021 14:19

All I can think of is this guy and his rings

My fiancé wears a family signet ring on his little finger, inherited down his mother's family line who were very landed gentry types.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 16/09/2021 14:34

My son wears his (late) dad's one, after he managed to get it off his grabby gf. ( I think she pulled it off his dead fingers. Ugh)

He likes it as it's a link to his memories.

I don't think most people are confused at all. I know perfectly well what a signet ring looks like and what a sovereign ring looks like. Just because 'posh people' wear or wore signet rings with ther family crest on them, that doesn't stop wannabe posh people from buying one and having it engraved with whatever they fancy. If you google 'signet rings', you will see umpteen shops where you can buy one and have it engraved.

Youdoyoutoday · 16/09/2021 14:51

Signet ring reminds me of argos

ChristmasCocktail · 16/09/2021 14:55

Posh...? Chavvy drug dealing boy racer more like. Grin

waybill · 16/09/2021 14:56

@pumpkinnut

He wears it on his pinky
That's where some men choose to wear their wedding ring. Are you sure he's single?
MarleneDietrichsSmile · 16/09/2021 15:00

Wearing it on pinky is the only way for proper “old school” posh, ie his great grandfather may have been an Earl or something, his granny a Lady

Also, it’s no barrier to friendship/dating Smile

ArtemisiaVulgaris · 16/09/2021 15:04

Posh people and chavvy people have a lot in common. They're both into horses and dogs, collect jewellery, go hunting, are loud and closely involved with their families.

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 16/09/2021 15:08

@JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon Grin

In MN, and only on MN is Prince Charles a chav Grin whilst the genuinely posh can be found in Waitrose buying nice ham , wearing Boden Wink

Livpool · 16/09/2021 15:21

Ugh not sure why but a man wearing a ring on his pinky finger would put me right off

InPraiseOfBacchus · 16/09/2021 15:30

Can we all agree that it's weird to wear one unless they have your OWN family's crest on them?

FourTeaFallOut · 16/09/2021 15:35

I mean, where I grew up I was under the impression that some men wore signets so when they punched someone, it hurt the other person more. Grin

VestaTilley · 16/09/2021 15:37

I’m more concerned about your feelings for your colleague - you’ll have to keep a lid on it unless you’re very careful, else it’ll be very awkward!

Signet rings, worn on the little finger of the right hand, are traditionally the preserve of the upper classes. Usually they have a family crest on them.

If you see someone wearing one who doesn’t seem well spoken, or comes in to work on Monday not bearing a brace of pheasants, the chances are they’re just a pretentious try-hard with a Barbour jacket that’s never seen a muddy field Grin eg not actually posh.

Depends what kind of job you're in. In my line of work it's pretty normal for colleagues to date and marry each other!

Cas112 · 16/09/2021 15:50

Defo the opposite hahahhah

CommanderBurnham · 16/09/2021 16:05

I'm sure Prince Charles wears one. And maybe Prince Andrew? Although I don't know what that would mean.

MorganKitten · 16/09/2021 18:56

I know a family who all have a family crest ring, not posh in the slightest

LimeRedBanana · 16/09/2021 19:10

Are you coming back to your thread OP?

elbea · 16/09/2021 19:19

@MorganKitten There is a difference between a family crest and a coat of arms. The proper signet rings have a coat of arms on. Every surname will have a family crest if you google it. A coat of arms has to be granted by the College of Arms and is specific to individuals and family branches. Not everyone is eligible for a Coat of Arms.

KaptanKatanga · 16/09/2021 19:32

@Livpool "Ugh not sure why but a man wearing a ring on his pinky finger would put me right off"

Same here, the only jewellery men should wear are a watch, and a wedding ring..
