Does wearing a signet ring mean you're posh

So I've got feelings for one of my colleagues and I was speaking to my friend and mentioned how he wears a signet ring. Friend said I bet he's posh. It this true? I admit I don't really know anyone else in my life who wears one but I just wonder whether it's common to wear one. By the way there's nothing wrong with being posh, I'm not bothered if they are or they are not.

Yep, posh. As pp said, will have the family crest on it.

WhoNeedsaManOfTheWorld · 15/09/2021 18:50

We all wore them in the 80s, both sexes, and we are proper working classGrin

TheRebelle · 15/09/2021 18:52

If he was posh enough to wear a signet ring then you wouldn’t need to ask, it would be immediately obvious.

He’s more likely to be really chavvy but one thing is for sure, he’s not middle class.

3womeninaboat · 15/09/2021 18:53

It’s posh if Argos is posh.

Glitterazzi · 15/09/2021 18:56

In my experience it means they are posh! Grin

BlowDryRat · 15/09/2021 18:56

It's either very posh or very not, depending on who's wearing it.

billy1966 · 15/09/2021 18:58

Jewellery on men has always given me the Ick.

A signet ring would be a major Ick.

Ameanstreakamilewide · 15/09/2021 19:00

Does he wear it on his little finger?

I never trust a man that wears a ring on his pinky finger.

Jewellery on fellas, in general, isn't a good look, i'll be bound.

knittingaddict · 15/09/2021 19:01

If it's a family heirloom and the ring is an antique then he's possibly posh.

If it's a modern ring with no family name attached then he's probably not posh. In fact he's more likely to be the opposite of posh.

Signet rings ceased to carry any significance a long time ago.

nc4565 · 15/09/2021 19:02

My DH has one. He's well posh. Been in the family for generations. He said I can have one with the family crest too... I know plenty of women who also wear one.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 15/09/2021 19:03

I knew someone who had one but that was because he put it on in a shop and couldn't get it off again, so he bought it!

(He never did get it engraved)

ViaRia · 15/09/2021 19:04

When you say “posh”, do you mean wealthy? If you know the guy, surely you can tell whether or not his behaviour is posh and that has nothing to do with a ring.

PermanentTemporary · 15/09/2021 19:05

Jilly Cooper wrote about this. Take that how you like. Nonsense of course....

Big pinky signet with crest - likely upper class
Slightly less big pinky signet with monogram - middle middle class
Middle finger small signet - lower middle class
Sovereign- hipster about 10 years ago or working class

StaceysmomandIhavegotitgoinon · 15/09/2021 19:07

Posh? No.
Wealthy? No.
A total chav? Yes.

Urgh I would run a mile from a man with a signet ring. Two miles if i was fitter.

LittleGwyneth · 15/09/2021 19:10

Both ends of the spectrum, can either be Prince Charles or Del boy

gogohm · 15/09/2021 19:10

Rings on men other than wedding rings are not posh. Only men I've known who wore signet rings were a bit chavvy for want of a better word

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 15/09/2021 19:12

Prince Charles and the Fleur des lis? Then yes, smart. Ditto someone titled / with a coat of arms. The point of the signet ring was to press ones coat of arms or ‘signature’ into wax.

Someone who is also smart but not ‘landed’ knows the code and is unlikely to wear one.

Someone who went to private but not Public school and has their initials on the ring? Someone who thinks it makes him seem ‘posh’.

fallfallfall · 15/09/2021 19:14

Engineers will often wear them, called the iron ring. Symbolic of their responsibilities. I’m a nurse and wear my school signet ring.

Glssr195726113493 · 15/09/2021 19:14

It makes you either posh or wannabe posh.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 15/09/2021 19:15

Can do. Can mean the opposite. Or anything in between!

elbea · 15/09/2021 19:17

There has been a thread on this before. People talking about Del Boy rings are talking about sovereigns.

Signet rings worn on the pinky finger with a coat of arms usually signify a notable family history. It doesn’t necessarily mean they have money now, just at some point. Look up the College of Arms.

Keepitrealnomists · 15/09/2021 19:17

Signet rings give me the ick 🤢

KeyboardWorriers · 15/09/2021 19:17

Could be posh. Could be desperate to make people think he is posh. Could have bought it for a tenner from Argos.

Mamamamasaurus · 15/09/2021 19:19

The only person I know who wears one is creepy and makes my skin crawl

I view them as chavvy and definitely not posh

Changechangychange · 15/09/2021 19:21

Here we go OP, 14 pages of argument about whether they are posh or not:
