Does wearing a signet ring mean you're posh

So I've got feelings for one of my colleagues and I was speaking to my friend and mentioned how he wears a signet ring. Friend said I bet he's posh. It this true? I admit I don't really know anyone else in my life who wears one but I just wonder whether it's common to wear one. By the way there's nothing wrong with being posh, I'm not bothered if they are or they are not.

Chavvy. Deal breaker

MeredithGreyishblue · 15/09/2021 20:51

Nope, not confusing with sovereign rings!
If it's an Argos beaut he probably isn't posh...

If he’s posh, you’ll know without the ring

elbea · 15/09/2021 21:05

@NeverDropYourMooncup they may call themselves signet rings but they aren’t truly signet rings. Signet rings need to have an engraving for embossing a seal.

@cherrytreecottage

I've worked with some men who went to private school & they all wear a signet on their pinky. I think it's a status and symbolises family heritage, wealth etc.

Like lot of things it is either extremely posh or extremely common.

Proper upper class men used to wear them as wedding rings according to a twatty Old Etonian I used to know.

CheeseCrackersAndChutney · 15/09/2021 21:20

My grandad had a signet ring and he was a lorry driver

cafedesreves · 15/09/2021 21:22

I know some serious poshos who all wear them. They also like shooting, tweed, Labradors etc. It has their family crest on it.

Plenty of non posh also wear them.

Changechangychange · 15/09/2021 23:55

@NeverDropYourMooncup “have you looked up the Argos catalogue” GrinGrin

MurielSpriggs · 16/09/2021 00:05

@pumpkinnut

He wears it on his pinky
If he calls any of his fingers a pinky then he's definitely not posh Grin
ViciousJackdaw · 16/09/2021 01:24

@pumpkinnut

He wears it on his pinky
What, and you still fancy him?
DifficultBloodyWoman · 16/09/2021 01:34

Not posh. Dreadfully common.

RonaldMcDonald · 16/09/2021 01:42

I wear one, as do many of my friends, on my little finger
Never thought of it as posh
Simply what everyone gets at 18 or 21
I now realise after typing that what a dick I sound

horsefairmare · 16/09/2021 01:59

My ex barsteward h had one and he was very chavtastic, lower, lower working class. He thought it fantastic, I thought it very naff.

Sunshinealligator · 16/09/2021 05:17

My mum used to say they were posh, but we lived on a council estate on Luton. How cringe she brought one for my step dad, and got one for herself and got one for me one Christmas. All from Argos.

So it always sits in the Chavvy category for me, unless the person wearing it is a bit "yah" then I assume it isn't from Elizabeth Duke.

Matilda82 · 16/09/2021 05:21

Surely there are other markers if he is posh? Confused

londonrach · 16/09/2021 05:40

No, it's Def not posh...in fact the other way if anything. Judging by my Facebook it's the new thing to do....the new tattoo.... everyone s got one...

Lolalovesmarmite · 16/09/2021 05:45

They’re worn by two very different types of people. It’s very easy to tell the difference.

IllegibleSquiggles · 16/09/2021 05:46

@LimeRedBanana

Sure you can tell if he’s genuinely ‘posh’ - i.e. landed gentry - or not? Just by the way he talks, acts, dresses, etc?

If you’re asking on here - he’s not posh, he’s just a regular bloke.

Yes, unless he never speaks and all you can see of him is his little finger, surely there are lots of other indicators of his class?
thepeopleversuswork · 16/09/2021 07:42

If it’s a family heirloom it’s posh. If not it’s the opposite.

KingdomScrolls · 16/09/2021 07:49

I grew up in East London, signet rings aplenty and no landed gentry.

Howshouldibehave · 16/09/2021 07:49

Exactly this!

minatrina · 16/09/2021 08:19

This is a really easy one surely? If it's a signet ring with his family crest, he's certainly posh.

If it's engraved with initials or other such things, he's probably trying to appear posh.

If it looks cheap and tacky like the Argos monstrosities above, he's probably cheap and tacky.

When I was at uni (only 3 years ago so I think I'm kind of in touch with the youth still), the poshest boys all loved their signet rings (with family crests). I knew an middle class lad who obviously wanted to appear posh, but his signet ring was poked fun at because it had his boarding school coat of arms on it, in an obvious attempt to appear as if he had a family crest one.

For women, signet rings are just generally fashionable right now so I don't think you can tell either way.

(P.S., sovereigns are different to signet rings!!!!)

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 16/09/2021 08:27

It used to be a marker of that but I think wannabes caught on to it and it isn’t. It’s not a look I like, anyway.
