not to beleve in all these jobs

Supposedly there are thousands and thousands of vacancies, but if you actually look, most are agencies. You don't so much apply for a vacancy as get lured in to sign up for an agency. They might or might not then put your name forward for something, and it might not be suitable if they do.

And most of the jobs that are not actually just imaginary fronts to help an agency get your details on file, require ownership of a vehicle.

AIBU to believe that there are actually far far fewer vacancies than the news headline figures are suggesting.

I would guess 10-20% at most

HGV drivers who don't even have access to toilets., let alone showers

It is a legal requirement for sites where loading and unloading takes place, that drivers are given access to welfare facilities.

There was a problem, early in lockdown, where sites were not providing this, and this was compounded by the closure of Motorway service stations and other food outlets, but the situation is way better than it used to be.

It is true, there are a shortage of non motorway rest stops for HGV drivers and it is something that needs to be looked at, but making sweeping statements that HGV drivers have no access to toilets is laughable.

BobMortimersPetOwl · 17/09/2021 10:33

At the moment I'm receiving around 10 calls and emails every single day about jobs asking whether I'm interested or I might know anyone who is, and mine is a relatively specialist field.

Every time I pass hospitality venues there are signs up advertising for staff. Same for logistics companies, manufacturing etc.

A million residents from the EU have returned home, and the jobs they had are vacant.

What is laughable is the provision for HGV drivers in the UK vs much of the European continent.

Hi guys,

I literally just made an account so I could post on this thread.
I've been working purely contract work since I graduated my masters because I can't find a decent job. I feel as though the majority of comments are saying they're crying out for people to work, offering great positions.
I just can't find anything.

Could you guys please post links to these jobs?

BoredZelda · 17/09/2021 10:35

Our companies have not innovated or automated like they have in Japan because they did not need to

How do you automate/innovate care home or nursing auxiliary jobs?

Give me an example of where we are using people as labour that we could innovate/automate?

BoredZelda · 17/09/2021 10:37

That’s a different argument. Could we do better? Of course. Is there NO access to WCs for HGV drivers? Of course there isn’t.

ejhhhhh · 17/09/2021 10:37

Whereabouts are you in the UK? It does seem surprising that your DC couldn't get jobs. I work in a school and we can't fill vacancies of all types. Being unable to recruit teachers is nothing new, but at the moment we can't fill vacancies of all sorts of admin, site and support staff. My colleagues has a student son who was looking for work this summer, but he wasn't successful. There were jobs he could do, but none which had the flexibility (to go to festivals etc) that he wanted. Ultimately, he didn't need a job, so was picky, and didn't get one. Could that have been the issue?

MrsSkylerWhite · 17/09/2021 10:39

If we hadn't had unlimited EU immigration for 20 years, we wouldn't be in this mess.

Our companies have not innovated or automated like they have in Japan because they did not need to.

So rather than blaming Brexit, we should blame Tony Blair for allowing unlimited immigation“

Nonsense. It’s hard to automate care work and hospitality roles, they need human beings. Care homes and hospitality were kept going by foreign workers who were willing to work for appalling pay for years.

If these companies want to fill their vacancies with local staff, they need to pay properly.

You want random people on the internet to find you a job so you don’t have to do any legwork..? Hmm
GnomeDePlume · 17/09/2021 10:41

@Pythonesque I think that is an interesting list but depends a lot on essentially voluntary work.

A huge problem for many people is that the benefit system is not flexible enough to allow people to take jobs as they come available then restart benefits immediately that job ends.

The best qualification for getting a job is having a job. Making it easy for people to take a short term job but then return to benefits will encourage people to take a chance on a job.

Otherpeoplesteens · 17/09/2021 10:41

I also see the headlines about labour shortages, and the signs in the window, and like a number of pp I simply cannot reconcile it with my own experience of job-hunting. I have ten years white collar senior management experience and an MBA and cannot get so much as an acknowledgment for any job that I apply to. It is not an exaggeration to say that out of the last 100 applications I have had one actual response, one Zoom interview, and they never even bothered to get back to me with the outcome.

I'd gladly do the bar work, retail, warehousing and driving. However, as others have noted, if you need fixed hours around childcare (never mind that it has to pay enough to fund the childcare) then realistically you have no chance, no matter how much you want to work. And the fuckers never reply anyway.

theemmadilemma · 17/09/2021 10:42

@listentomydeclaration

Brexit and/or the pandemic is a convenient excuse for employers who don't want to pay a decent wage or offer decent hours, or flexibility, hence relying on non British staff.

I hope this surge in unfilled vacancies makes UK employment conditions better.

This. I'm absolutely pissed off people couldn't see what would happen in this country post Brexit. People lapped up what they wanted to hear and failed to see what an immediate post Brexit UK would look like.

No one British wants to step up and take the jobs migrant EU workers were doing. We're left with huge holes. But ultimately the above is at the core of that.

Regarding agencies, I always found that the fake jobs were the ones where they phoned you back straight away, often within minutes of sending your CV in. They pretend to be very interested, and go through the motions of an 'interview'. And for each claim you make, they want the name of someone who can verify it in a reference.

They aren't interested in references and there's no job. You've actually just given them six sales leads.

Peregrina · 17/09/2021 10:46

Yes, and at one time that never used to be the case - so in the late 60s/early 70s a firm could be on short time working and offer work two weeks on, and two off and the staff in the two off weeks could register for unemployment benefit to tide them over. Now it's not possible.

Tkathn · 17/09/2021 10:46

Don't be silly now.

They have already stated they have loads of jobs and are advertising. If they have links already, then a little copy and paste wouldn't be hard.

Otherwise I'll keep applying like I am.

Have you had someone do a look at your CV? Is it that your experience is in a lower popularity area? If you're a senior manager, have you made connections with headhunters/recruiters in your field? Like others, I've been recruiting and had quite a lot of applicants but the strong ones all have other offers on the table and we've needed to increase the already good salaries by 10% from what we hired at last year, offer more flex etc in order to secure them.

I think you're correct OP, and I've joined sites and have then received so much spam that I've had to close the e-mail account!

@Tkathn what job are you looking for? What’s your degree in?

Otherpeoplesteens · 17/09/2021 10:57

@OverTheRubicon

Yes, lots of people have looked over it, lots of suggestions, none have made any difference.

My experience is in healthcare, but in commercial and business development roles that have largely disappeared from the NHS due to changes in policy and the big integration programmes. It's why I left to do an MBA, but I literally cannot get a look-in anywhere else without industry experience.

Last year, when the vaccine programme was launching, I got an unsolicited email from an health-only agency stating they wanted people with only three requirements: project management qualification (I had PRINCE2 at the time, unfortunately since lapsed), healthcare experience (loads) and available immediately (I am a SAHP and my wife was on mat leave at the time). Multiple roles, nationally. I did not even get an acknowledgement.

About two months later I got another email, inviting me to work in a Trust as a project manager on a voluntary, unremunerated basis. Mmmm...

BoredZelda · 17/09/2021 11:06

I'm not sure if that's at me @BoredZelda but I can't do FT with 2 young children.

That doesn't mean all the jobs available are zero hours low wage. It means they don't fit your working pattern.

I did my job P/T flexible working. I applied to a company looking for one of those F/T 50k roles and offered my services in the working pattern I needed and they hired me. My point was, not all the jobs available are zero hours contracts for minimum wage.

Rabblesthecat · 17/09/2021 11:07

AS long as there are jobs there should be no reason for able bodied people claiming unemployment .... we should be a lot harder on claimants.

When you are receiving tax payers money for being unemployed you should lose the right to be picky about the work. If it was good enough for EU labour, it should be good enough for the unemployed

RestingPandaFace · 17/09/2021 11:12

@TheFairyCaravan

DH leaves the RAF in November. He had people desperate for him since March. He’s got a new job, still in aviation, quite easily tbh. The company he’s working for have had difficulty filling some of their positions even after the redundancies throughout aviation this past year.

Round here there’s jobs coming up every single day. We’re very rural, too. There’s a distribution and call centre for a clothing brand near by , but they can’t fill their positions. The call centres vacancies are working from home, too. Unfortunately they’re 40hr weeks, which is too much for me because I’m poorly, however if it was less I’d be applying.

Send them your CV anyway and tell them how many hours you can work and see what they say. I know companies that are being fat more flexible than usual because they have no choice!
Tkathn · 17/09/2021 11:13
@Tkathn what job are you looking for? What’s your degree in?
Hi!

I'm a creative, so I'm looking for social media, videography or 3D jobs. My experience is in Animation and games, social media management and film and TV. I also have experience working in radio.

Basically anything in the media industry I'll apply for.

That being said, I've also done my time in restaurants and bars, and a bit of retail, but preferably I'd rather work in the media industry.

Thanks for asking Smile
