not to beleve in all these jobs

Supposedly there are thousands and thousands of vacancies, but if you actually look, most are agencies. You don't so much apply for a vacancy as get lured in to sign up for an agency. They might or might not then put your name forward for something, and it might not be suitable if they do.

And most of the jobs that are not actually just imaginary fronts to help an agency get your details on file, require ownership of a vehicle.

AIBU to believe that there are actually far far fewer vacancies than the news headline figures are suggesting.

I would guess 10-20% at most

Never happened to me = must never have happened to anyone! 🤣 I’ve never been stung by a wasp, so I don’t believe anyone has. Bloody hell the insular lives people lead.

MrsSkylerWhite · 17/09/2021 09:39

Went to look at our youngest’s university accommodation in NW city the other day. Vacancies and help wanted signs posted on doors of I’d say one in three shops/restaurants, even large chains.

We were pleased because they’re hoping for part-time work.

It’s the same in our small town, especially cafes and take aways. Home Bargains (regular staff of about a dozen) has four vacancies for shop floor staff and two for cleaning staff. It’s advertising directly in the windows too.

Iwouldratherbemuckingout · 17/09/2021 09:40

I work for an independent govt organisation with good terms and conditions and we are struggling to recruit across all types of roles. All organisations in same sector reporting the same, as well as firms who handle recruitment for us.

wishingitwasfriday · 17/09/2021 09:42

I live in a seaside town. All the local pubs/restaurants and shops are recruiting and have had to limit their hours to due a lack of staff. Where I work we have huge issues filling our role at the moment and we're public sector, so good pay, benefits and flexible working etc. There are jobs out there if people want them.

DanceAllDay · 17/09/2021 09:43

I disagree about not being able to walk into a career - I just did! The market is ridiculously hot right now. I was headhunted a few months back and for doing a role I’m currently doing achieved a huge pay rise

  • this is not a brag post! My company, whilst I was very happy there, wouldn’t have been able to match that so I left.

I know it’s not always about money, but sometimes you just can’t let an opportunity slip past you.

BoredZelda · 17/09/2021 09:45

All those people who voted for Brexit because "they are taking our jobs" - they had a point

No, they didn’t. What has been shown is, they filled a gap. There are 1.6 million unemployed people at the moment. That is 4.6% of people unemployed. This level of unemployment is considered as full employment, i.e most countries would always have 4-5% of people unable to work for a variety of reasons.

There are 953,000 jobs. available. If we assumed everyone who was unemployed was able to fill these roles, that would leave 647,000 people unemployed, meaning our unemployment level was ridiculously low, lower than any other time except for a brief moment in the 1950s (worth noting we counted things differently back then too) and lower than any other nation in Europe. That pretty much points to it being an unattainable level of unemployment.

We do not have enough people in the U.K., to fill the roles available. We do not have the appropriate skills in the U.K. to fill particular gaps in particular industries. We do not have enough of the right people in the right areas to plug the gap, so, unless you are advocating Tebbit and IDS type polices where people just have to uproot their entire families to find work, we need non U.K. citizens to fill those roles.

BoredZelda · 17/09/2021 09:47

Good for you, it did for me though

It was good for me. And good for all the other people who have used agencies and found them to be an appropriate way to find work. Having had feedback from agents I know, the situation you describe is not the norm and putting people off using your anecdata is unhelpful.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 17/09/2021 09:49

There are a ridiculous amount of care, retail and hospitality vacancies where I live and they are all being advertised directly by the companies recruiting so YABU.

CorianderAndCream · 17/09/2021 09:54

I mean there are thousands of vacancies for HGV drivers... just depends if you have the licence

TweetyPieBird · 17/09/2021 09:55

YANBU. Most jobs are vague listings by agencies. The type where the agency will say “oh we JUST found someone to fill that role, but if you sign up…”

Peregrina · 17/09/2021 09:59

Priti Patel has made rather a song and dance about immigration policies. She must have slipped up somewhere if we have jobs which can't be filled by an aging population, but the younger fitter people aren't able to come in to do the jobs.

PermanentTemporary · 17/09/2021 10:00

Good quality childcare needs people working to provide it...

We always struggle to recruit in our team as we need specialist training and are in an expensive city. The current pressure has made our managers reopen a training post that a new graduate can go into, that was cut 3 years ago. So im glad about that and hope there'll be more similar situations.

Rannva · 17/09/2021 10:02

The trick here is stop looking at agencies if you don't like agencies. It's not 1994 anymore and you need to look for a job like a normal, modern person. It's not all "going to the jobcentre", looking in "a shop window for a little postcard" or "handing your CV to the manager."

Redsquirrel5 · 17/09/2021 10:03

Lots of jobs here.

Hotels aren’t able to run as normal because the can’t fill vacancies. Hundreds of hospitality jobs.
Loads of jobs in care homes.
A few in schools.
Lots of support jobs for adults with SeN.
A few in local shops.
Lots of milking jobs. Cowmen.
Farm work as in tractor work, harvesting jobs not filled so farmers helping each other and were out until midnight in August.
Jobs in local hospitals- care assistants, porters, Nurses.
Stacks of cleaning jobs in pubs, hospitals, schools and for individuals.

Babysitting, childminders and Nanny jobs.

Not just agencies but local knowledge/ word of mouth; advertised in store; local authority websites and the local papers.

cushioncovers · 17/09/2021 10:04

Ye there are thousands and thousands of job vacancies. Most of them seem to be low paid temp jobs they aren't worth bothering with unless your on your uppers.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 17/09/2021 10:05

Round here there are hundreds of jobs and all with local firms.

Our ATS has had 2 full time jobs going for months.

Tooembarrassingtomention · 17/09/2021 10:06

@ColorMagicBarbie

Not according to the road hauliers association last week Costs up to £8k, need theory and practical tests and a massive test backlog

Where in the country are you that HGV tests are available in a few days? I have a colleague who would love to know?

£8k. 😂 You could pass a family of four for that.

I got mine nearly four years ago for just under £2k and it took me four days with test on final day. In the UK.

4 Years ago- so not last week then?

The world was a very different place 4 years ago

Xenia · 17/09/2021 10:07

For the first time in my adult lifetime there has been a sea change on the jobs front with 1m vacancies (when I graduated in the 1980s we had 3m unemployed - the highest in 1982 for FIFTY years and ever since it has never been as good as now).

I have never in my adult life time seen so many shops and places with signs in the windows asking for staff. John Lewis or Waitrose is paying a £1000 signing on bonus for heavy goods drivers where there is a specific shortage. There are bout 100k vacancies in the NHS. One of my lawyer daughters was saying she has never had as many recruitment people after for for jobs. Sector after sector (although of course not all eg airlines is still dire) needs people.

LindaEllen · 17/09/2021 10:11

There are plenty of jobs. The issue is people think they're above most of them.

listentomydeclaration · 17/09/2021 10:14

Why wouldn't anyone currently unemployed want to take a paid job?

Its exactly that attitude that has allowed employers to get away with shit hours, pay, conditions etc for so long.

"oh they are so desperate for a job, they won't complain!"

"a job's a job, they should be grateful"

But now there are so many jobs out there to choose from, employers are panicking, and rightly so.

Many employees no longer want to waste their day commuting, not seeing enough of their families, working for peanuts, zero hour contracts and many other reasons they may not want to work a certain job.

And relatives abroad and in the EU are reporting similar problems. It is not a Brexit issue!

The world was a very different place 4 years ago

It was. But the price of HGV training hasn’t quadrupled over 4 years. Far from it.

Training costs at the closest centre to me are £1,753 (includes the test) the only costs on top of that are medical, and theory tests, and, if required, and drivers CPC. This centre offers that for £219. So, you can be on the road for about 2k. Now, for some it might as well be 8k because who the hell has 2k lying about, and it is true there is a backlog of costs. But to pretend it costs individuals 8k to train will put people off even looking in to it.

What the RHA was referring to, was the cost of companies providing C+E apprenticeships, NOT the cost of an individual obtaining a C+E licence.
