Supposedly there are thousands and thousands of vacancies, but if you actually look, most are agencies. You don't so much apply for a vacancy as get lured in to sign up for an agency. They might or might not then put your name forward for something, and it might not be suitable if they do.

And most of the jobs that are not actually just imaginary fronts to help an agency get your details on file, require ownership of a vehicle.

AIBU to believe that there are actually far far fewer vacancies than the news headline figures are suggesting.

I would guess 10-20% at most

I checked on our NHS trust website (NW) and there are very few vacancies which surprised me considering how chronically mad busy some of the wards are.

Bythemillpond · 19/09/2021 09:10

Dyslexia and ADHD are not a bar to achieving GCSEs

Depends on the severity
Ds didn’t read till he was 12. He had tutors and school and when school gave up on him I HE him for a while where each day we would practice reading over and over. Going over the same words to try to either help him recognise them or breaking the words down into sounds.
Then a set of words he knew the previous day would become unrecognisable the next

Xenia · 19/09/2021 09:17

Here in NW London there seem to be at least 100 jobs on our NHS website so it may just depend where you are in the country. I had to move hundreds of miles away from all family for work just before we had our children.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 19/09/2021 10:45

so many band 2 jobs on the nhs website, always, money isnt bad

Stasiland · 19/09/2021 13:20

Not locally in my town there aren't. Maybe in the south east but not up here.

RestingPandaFace · 19/09/2021 14:17

It depends where up here is. I’m on the outskirts of a northern city and have just had lunch somewhere that is only serving carvery as no chefs and was talking to a friend yesterday who has over 50 warehouse driving and office vacancies.

Money isn't bad? It's not great.

Stasiland · 19/09/2021 16:42

@RestingPandaFace guess that’s great if you are a haulage driver, a chef or have office skills ? Some of the northern towns up here can’t compare with cities like Manchester or Leeds for job opportunities. Our big Sainsbury’s has none. Tesco driver jobs loads but shop-floor workers very few. I was looking for a post for my ds whilst at uni btw. Which company and where are you talking about that has 50 vacancies?

ColorMagicBarbie · 19/09/2021 17:36

Well, if this is going to be the situation for some time, it could even be worth people gaining new skills rather than expecting the job market to cater to their specific skillset.

16 year old DD has just walked into a 7 hour a week contract - with the promise of lots of overtime if she wants it - at a national high street retailer. DD is a smart kid with great social skills but also with zero experience. She's being paid the minimum wage rate for 18-20 year olds which is about £2 per hour more than the minimum wage for her age group.

Delighted for her, but it's been very easy to get a retail job for someone very young, who needs extra breaks and is restricted in which hours she can work, and with no experience whatsoever.

m0therofdragons · 19/09/2021 18:35

We have lots of jobs we can’t fill - where all the graduates have gone is beyond me.

Apprenticeships are very elite, and extremely competitive. I don't think anyone anywhere is claiming that there are unfilled apprenticeships .

it is ok, no qualifications necessary, or at least very little.
MrsLargeEmbodied · 19/09/2021 18:52

Stasiland · 19/09/2021 19:01

Plenty of people with dyslexia and ADHD (varying degrees of severity) are perfectly able to complete their GCSEs. These people are determined and hard working and don’t let their SEN prevent them from achieving

Maybe because they were diagnosed and either had meds to help them concentrate or lessons to help them over come their dyslexia

Have you tried to get even one child tested for dyslexia or ADHD even if you aren’t hampered by the fact that it turns out you have ADHD and dyslexia as well.

Unfortunately, your DC didn’t put in the effort

Do you think this of other disabled people. They can’t walk because they are just not putting the effort in.

I can vouch for the fact that every child with ADHD and dyslexia has every opportunity to pass GCSEs, however severely affected they are,

There are loads of jobs but most are low paid/part time/zero hours etc.

So what are these opportunities and do they extend to those that the school refuse to refer for a diagnosis.
What happens to those that aren’t diagnosed
MrsF "maybe someone should set up a recruitment agency for people who want to return to work in flexible, part time work". I think there are some companies like this eg www.termtimerecruitment.co.uk/welcome
TimeWise jobs is another one.

LindyLou2020 · 20/09/2021 00:28

On the same topic, but deviating somewhat.....
It only seems a short while ago that I was reading about many, many thousands of retail staff being made redundant when their companies ceased trading, (Debenhams et al).
Plus workers in the travel industry, from travel agency staff to pilots.
I wasn't personally affected, but felt so sorry for these people, and wondered how on earth they would find other jobs when Covid had made the economy seem so bleak.
I'd love to hear from people affected by these job losses as to what happened to them, if any are on Mumsnet?
