DD 4yo has just started reception, and has been singing this song, which they have taught her.

'The farmer wants a wife... The wife wants a child etc'.

AIBU to think this is a really old fashioned, and fairly sexist song to be teaching kids?

Just for the record, it's a fairly "progressive" school in a fairly "progressive" and sought after neighbourhood.

...and no, I don't usually have a stick up my arse, so might well be overreacting.

I get you, op. I felt very uncomfortable listening to this for the first time in over 30 years when my toddler had nursery rhymes on YouTube last year. But the version that came on was American and quite a bit worse - the words were the farmer takes (not "wants") a wife, etc. I think it was mother goose club or something? I definitely got the ick listening to it.

I had the boa constrictor rhyme in a book. I remember reciting it to my friends at university and none of them had heard of it though one person helpfully suggested there should be an ‘oh silly, it’s up to my…’ verse.

I remember my grandmother singing a song about Auntie Mary had a canary up the leg of her drawers. God knows what that was all about or what anyone thinks about it nowadays.

Plenty of nursery rhymes are questionable, trying to drown cats, Georgie Porgie kissing girls and making them cry, and Peter Pumpkin eater locked his wife up
