AIBU?

Husband not flushing the toilet. AIBU?

My husband never flushes the (downstairs) toilet at night. This results in a pan-full of very smelly urine in the morning (he usually stays up later than me and does a few wees in there before coming to bed). It's truly disgusting and he won't stop doing it.
I got home from school and grocery run this morning (at around 10am) and as I walked past the downstairs toilet door, the smell hit me. The smell inside was horrific! Envy (not envy)
His reasons for not flushing range from not wanting to wake the children (it doesn't) to just "forgetting".
Please help mumsnetters, AIBU to find this disgusting and if so what can I do to make him stop doing this?

If it's yellow, let it mellow!

Lol but yeah it sounds like your husband needs to drink more water if it's that pungent

@TaraR2020

Someone I lived with brought this habit from home with them to our shared house, I put a stop to it right away, it's rank. Yanbu this would make me really cross, it's so disrespectful

This is bring it up every single time

I can’t get over how many people say they don’t flush the toilet! Between that the infrequent washers and the ones that wear clothes for weeks on end without washing, no wonder so many people stink when out in public these days.

Oh but wait, apparently neither them nor their wee smells. Bet their poo smells like roses too

Eat a lot of asparagus and see how he likes living with other peoples smelly wee.

I did not realise not flushing pee was a thing. We always flush, even in the middle of the night I flush and the ensuite is about 6ft from husbands head but he is dead to the world. It would take more than a flushing loo to wake him. Plus we shower twice a day

My Mum taught us in the 90’s not to flush wee’s because it’s a waste of water. So I flush after the second or third wee. I’ve trained my partner to do the same- unless we have visitors.

Sometimes at night I don't flush if it's just a number 1 and I don't want to wake people. That seems the done thing in my circle of friends and they do the same and then flush first thing in the morning. If you have a few people in the house you are constantly woken up by people going to the loo otherwise.

On the flip side, I used to be a lodger of a landlady that wouldn't let me flush the toilet if it was just wee. She would get really annoyed because of "saving water", she was African and would frequently lecture me about how good we have it over here.

I thought she was batshit and left as soon as I could!

2p to pee?! 🤣

Look after the pennies. The pounds look after themselves

Actually I think my calculation was wrong, I was forgetting that I have dual flush toilets. It's only 3 litres for a light flush, so the cost of flushing is only 1p per pee.

Report
RandomLondoner · 14/09/2021 07:31

Due to inflation, the value of 1p falls over time, so it's getting ever-cheaper to spend a penny.

We flush every time the toilets are used in my home, whatever reason they were used for. Day and night.
Plus, the dog's like to drink out of them.

I wonder how many people who don't flush their urine away, leave the tap running whilst the brush their teeth.

My DC do this too. It started when a teacher at school said ‘if it’s yellow let it mellow’ so I can only imagine her home must smell like a cesspit.

He needs to drink more water - if the stench is risible that's the main issue.

Oh careful.. then you end up with that mega thread the other day where the husband getting up for a wee every night was keeping the OP awake Grin

Not that you should have to but you could put a load of bleach in it when you go to bed then it won't smell

What an exciting life you must lead. Nothing better to ponder?

The screeching about a bit of piss being left in a toilet for a few hours is bizarre. Yes it's not very nice if it smells (when it really shouldn't after that small amount of time) or that he knows it bothers OP but doesn't do anything about it, but really, saying it's 'gross' or that people who do it are 'filthy fuckers' or the truly laughable 'stop being disgusting, flush the toilet, and go vegetarian' - it's amazing you can bring yourselves to go outside and mix with the rest of humanity at all.

Sounds like he is dehydrated. Urine shouldn't smell that bad.
We don't flush wee away each time in our house, when it's just us at home. Such a waste of water. The system we have in UK of using uber fresh water to flush toilets is bonkers.

So has the OP come back on this yet? Whats the
Outcome of the last couple of days?

Also for all of you flushing after several wees, are you using TP? How much tissue is sitting in there when your flush? Based on my own toilet and several of the ones in homes that I work in sometimes just one flush after a wee and TP isn't enough

Sorry, toilet should be flushed after every use for hygiene reasons. Simple.

Why? Does wee fly if left between wees?
