Leftover meat for sandwiches tomorrow, will school really care?

7yo DD, year 3.

I don’t get paid until tomorrow, have about 40p to my name until then. Won't have time to do a shop before school. I have bread, butter, chocolate, fruit and juice for lunchboxes. The only filling I have is leftover chicken or tuna from the roast I did today.

I usually cook up a big chicken for the two of us and then use the leftovers in curries or for my own sandwiches over the next week.

When I was with ExH he would forbid me from putting leftover meat on sandwiches for DDs lunchbox (she was at Nursery at the time). Said it would make the Nursery (and probably now school) think we’re poor and common. He said it shows we can’t feed our child properly – it was fine to put the sliced sandwich chicken or sandwich ham or cheese, but tuna, leftover meat/poultry or egg where not allowed.

DD happily eats chicken (or pork or beef) sandwiches after school on the days she has a hot lunch, so I don’t see this as any different.

So will school really think badly of me as a parent for putting leftover meat in a sandwich for her? I doubt myself a lot and making lunch box tonight for tomorrow could hear him in my head telling me I was disgusting and setting us up for an investigation by SS (yes ExH was abusive and violent).

I can't stress strongly enough what an absolute dickhead your ex is. Left over roast chicken sandwich is the sandwich of kings!! Guess what my DD will be having in her packed lunch tomorrow.... left over roast chicken sandwich. This is a highly prized sandwich filler in our house.

It sounds like your ex has really messed with your head and left you full of self doubt - he sounds manipulative, controlling and frankly stupid. Trust your own judgement, not his.

notthemum · 12/09/2021 22:42

Sorry it's late my love. Haven't read the whole thread. I love cold chicken leftovers in a sandwich. Sounds like a great lunch to me. OH and you ex was a bloody idiot.
Well done for getting away.
You have got this. 💐

Closetbeanmuncher · 12/09/2021 22:43

What an imbacile 😂

My DC used to look forward to mums roast sandwiches on a Monday.

What would he rather you put in that nasty processed carcass pickings sold in packs??.. yeah that obviously screams wealth 🤔😂

DeepaBeesKit · 12/09/2021 22:44

Oh and your mum sounds like mine. She turns up with leftover meat every time saying I can put it in a risotto Grin. In my family if you aren't cooking extra everyone is panicking there won't be enough to go round.

BikeRunSki · 12/09/2021 22:48

Unless it’s Nutella, Jam, peanut butter or condensed milk, the school is unlikely to notice or care.

Halloaten · 12/09/2021 22:50

Left over chicken butties with mayo and black pepper are the best 👌

As an aside, my children go to a posh school and at parties, it's always shite like beetroot pate wraps and humous pinwheels etc. They all sit there licking them and side eyeing each other and not very much gets eaten.
DD had jam, dairylea, nutella and wafer thin ham butties at her party and the kids went wild for them. The amount of parents who whispered they were so happy about it was hilarious 😂

twocatsandtwokids · 12/09/2021 22:50

I think of leftover roast meat sandwiches as a luxury! Way healthier than processed ham!

I’m going to give my son chicken wraps this week in his packed lunch (yes, from our roast today) and was thinking earlier how hopefully he’ll be excited to find them and think it’s a real treat!

BlackTee40 · 12/09/2021 22:52

Leftover chicken and stuffing sandwiches are the best.

TheRebelle · 12/09/2021 22:59

How would tuna in a sandwich make you look poor? Tuna’s quite expensive compared to other sandwich fillings.

whycantwegoonasthree · 12/09/2021 23:00

MissTrip82 you might want to check down the back of the sofa
for your sense of humour. Hmm

MouseholeCat · 12/09/2021 23:02

Your ex has a really weirdly skewed perspective.

If anything, I would say leftover roast meat sandwiches are less "common" than run of the mill things like slices of ham... not that any particular sandwich filling would make someone out at being "common" or that anyone would notice.

Emmelina · 12/09/2021 23:09

Leftover meat sounds delicious!
Remember your ex is an ex for probably several reasons and pay no attention :)

notthemum · 12/09/2021 23:09

Humph. You buggers. I cooked some roast lamb for dinner (we did have it early).
I now really want a couple of real roast chicken crusty rolls and haven't had a penguin in years.
Cheers ladies.
😂😂🤣🤣😂

EtonianMother · 12/09/2021 23:09

OP, it's leftover meat in sandwiches all the way, here.

Don't be dictated to by an abusive ex who knows nothing of that about which he speaks.

Zilla1 · 12/09/2021 23:10

It's not leftover chicken, it's roast chicken which is demonstrably superior to most but not all sliced (formed) chicken from supermarkets. or tuna but I don't know if you cooked the tuna so can't accurately write something equivalent but it wouldn't matter if it were out of a can. Even if it wasn't, you wouldn't be judged for giving your DC a homemade sandwich for lunch. Hopefully over time, you'll successfully expel the pollution from the infection of your ex's thinking. Don't forget that every day you live with your DC free of an abusive ex is a triumph.

Good luck and I hope your DC enjoys their lunch.

RAFHercules · 12/09/2021 23:11

BikeRunSki
Peanut butter? What's wrong with that? Confused
Unless there's a kid with allergies in the class?

BlackTee40 · 12/09/2021 23:12

Fuck knows what he'd have made of me and my mum. I used to have haslet sandwiches in my packed lunch and umbongo and viscount mint biscuits or trio's but no one cares. He's an idiot. One of the biggest ones I've ever read about on here, in fact.

Zilla1 · 12/09/2021 23:18

BTW OP, does this prince pay extra child maintenance to show everyone he's not 'poor and common'?

Closetbeanmuncher · 12/09/2021 23:26

I can't think of anything more ridiculous, wrongheaded and pretentious – which is a sure-fire way of identifying someone who lacks real breeding

Spot on!

tinyme77 · 12/09/2021 23:28

Completely agree that leftover chicken sandwiches are a great lunch. Bit worried about a roast tuna! I didn't think leftover tuna sandwiches was a thing. :)

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 12/09/2021 23:28

Your ex sounds nuts!

I agree with everyone else- left over roast chicken is much better for your children than processed meat

ProcrastinationIsMySuperPower · 12/09/2021 23:31

My DD loves it when we have roast pork because it means roast pork and apple sauce sandwiches for packed lunch 😋 It's fine, and healthier than processed meat.

Couchbettato · 13/09/2021 00:17

Meat is meat at the end of the day. What your ex said is absolutely backwards. How would the axho even know it was leftovers if it's slapped between two slices of bread?

forallthetea · 13/09/2021 00:44

Your ex is ridiculous. I actually think the opposite that sliced meat you get in packets isn't good quality

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/09/2021 01:14

DD is considered quite the fancy pants at her school because of all the leftovers. I thinks it's actually fairly posh to give home-cooked food for packed lunches. It is at DD's school.
