Leftover meat for sandwiches tomorrow, will school really care?

7yo DD, year 3.

I don’t get paid until tomorrow, have about 40p to my name until then. Won't have time to do a shop before school. I have bread, butter, chocolate, fruit and juice for lunchboxes. The only filling I have is leftover chicken or tuna from the roast I did today.

I usually cook up a big chicken for the two of us and then use the leftovers in curries or for my own sandwiches over the next week.

When I was with ExH he would forbid me from putting leftover meat on sandwiches for DDs lunchbox (she was at Nursery at the time). Said it would make the Nursery (and probably now school) think we’re poor and common. He said it shows we can’t feed our child properly – it was fine to put the sliced sandwich chicken or sandwich ham or cheese, but tuna, leftover meat/poultry or egg where not allowed.

DD happily eats chicken (or pork or beef) sandwiches after school on the days she has a hot lunch, so I don’t see this as any different.

So will school really think badly of me as a parent for putting leftover meat in a sandwich for her? I doubt myself a lot and making lunch box tonight for tomorrow could hear him in my head telling me I was disgusting and setting us up for an investigation by SS (yes ExH was abusive and violent).

Im jealous of your daughters pack up 🤤 love leftover roast chicken in a sandwich! Definitely nothing wrong with leftover roasr chicken as a sandwich filler, as lots of replies have said... Much healthier that packet sandwich meat.

whycantwegoonasthree · 12/09/2021 21:59

Just to add - your Ex is showing himself up as 'common' by suggesting you use processed meat from the supermarket rather than delicious meat from your Sunday roast. I can't think of anything more ridiculous, wrongheaded and pretentious – which is a sure-fire way of identifying someone who lacks real breeding. Grin

It won't show you as anything other than the sort of mum who provides a delicious roast dinner for your child at the weekend.

So well done for being evidently a terrific mum and for ditching that complete knobber.

Nillynally · 12/09/2021 21:59

Ooo id love a roast chicken leftover sandwich for my lunch on a Monday! Will definitely not make you look 'common' probably the opposite!

whycantwegoonasthree · 12/09/2021 21:59

Also, I'm a bit envious of your DDs sandwiches tomorrow TBH. I've only got 'naice' ham. (Because I'm common as muck obvs.)

Calmdown14 · 12/09/2021 21:59

Eh? That would be a posh sandwich in our house!

Ex is obviously a twat about food, but why is he apparently not contributing to her school uniform?

derxa · 12/09/2021 22:05

@Tinselandlights

Leftover meat is much healthier than sandwich meat.

You're not doing anything wrong, ignore the thoughts of your ex and carry on.

Yes

Because CMS struggle enough to get money out of him, if I ask for anything I get told no.

Your ex is a (selfish) nut. I suspect he wanted to keep any leftover meat to himself.

SonicStars · 12/09/2021 22:17

Actual thick real meat in sandwiches feels decadent to me. Definitely not a sign of poverty.

I'm sorry for what your ex did to you.

Bootikin · 12/09/2021 22:18

Your ex has totally buggered your thinking. You’re fine, don’t worry! Consult as often as you need to, and ignore every single thing your ex said, ever.

SecretSpAD · 12/09/2021 22:19

My (proper posh) husbands favourite sandwich on a Monday is sliced roast leftover meat, sliced cold roast potatoes and whatever veg there is. All squeezed between doorsteps of white bread slathered with butter.

Second favourite sandwich, roast beef, mashed potato and gravy.

Yes, he used to take those to the office full of straight laced civil servants Grin

DancyNancy · 12/09/2021 22:20

Yabu to think it's unacceptable to use leftover meat. Your ex is a weirdo. Don't mind him.
Actual meat is WAYYY better than packaged sliced.

SecretSpAD · 12/09/2021 22:21

Of course the main problem you are now going to have @ChickenSandwichYum is that she'll love it so much you'll end up with the plastic ham in your sandwiches!

Sweettea1 · 12/09/2021 22:21

It's fine it's alot better than packet meat and I don't see how anyone could judge you for giving fresh cooked chicken over packet meat so much better for the child aswell.

Pebbledashery · 12/09/2021 22:23

Hope your ex chokes on his next Sunday roast. I would think it was anything but common. I know I'd devour a leftover roast chicken sandwich! Do it and don't even think about it again.

Asleanna · 12/09/2021 22:24

I'm glad he's your ex

barskits · 12/09/2021 22:24

Nobody in their right mind would judge you for that. The whole point of a large roast joint or chicken is that there is plenty left over to use afterwards for sandwiches & other meals.

Your ex was an abusive prick, by the way.

newnameday · 12/09/2021 22:30

I'm veggie and I'm salivating at the thought of a chicken leftover sandwich. So much better than chicken slices 🤷‍♀️

mustlovegin · 12/09/2021 22:31

YANBU OP

They won't be able to tell the difference between leftover or 'newly' cooked chicken anyway

Pebbledashery · 12/09/2021 22:33

I actually want one now. 😅

Please don’t write nonsense like this, especially when the OP is clearly worried about how others perceive the food she’s feeding her kids.

Ham or chicken lunch meat is also a perfectly acceptable thing to put on a sandwich.

There is no such thing as a person who ‘lacks real breeding’.

OP both leftover meat and pre-sliced meat purchased specifically for sandwiches are perfectly fine things to put on a sandwich.

Why on earth would that nasty chicken roll be better than actual chicken? Your ex is a fucking idiot and well done making him your ex. Jfc
DeepaBeesKit · 12/09/2021 22:39

Your ex is bonkers. Leftover roast meat is the BEST sandwich. Your lucky kiddies :)

JaninaDuszejko · 12/09/2021 22:39

Tempted to have roast chicken for tea tomorrow just for the leftovers. Yum!
