to not own an iron?

FawnFrenchieMum · 12/09/2021 20:27

Just read a thread on whether to iron school shirts or not. I never iron school shirts or anything else for that matter.

We used to have an iron but very very rarely got used, DH decided to take it on holiday (no idea why, I don’t iron at home so not sure why he thought I would on holiday) and left it in a cupboard. I’ve never replaced it.

I hang stuff straight from washing & drying. Never looks creased. If something looks bad, stick it on and blast the hair dryer at it.

DH doesn’t wear shirt & tie to work, I may need to reconsider if he did.

Anyone else not iron?!
YABU - of course I iron!
YANBU - no need to iron, wash, hang & wear

I don't know why I'm surprised at the bunfight but that's MN. Wash everything! Wash your sheets every day! Every towel you touched! Ick! but don't iron anything, nooooo, only idiots waste time and electricity ironing.
Heartened to see 38% ironers. Come on, don't hide.

I still want to know which wash masks are meant to go in, according to the MN laundry police!Grin I separate things into light, dark and handwash only (which is very rare) but sheets, towels, shirts, teatowels, underwear all goes in the same load at 40 or 50°. Masks are added according to what colour they are but I feel there must be a MN rule about those but I havent come across it yet.

@tellittomyhead

I use my iron about twice a day and also spend about 4 hours out of my weekend ironing all my clothes and bedding. I find those who don't bother to be very lazy - and common.
Hello mother. I didn’t know you were on mumsnet.
Fromage · 13/09/2021 11:37

Urgent message to those who judge those of us with unironed clothes:

We, the creased, the wrinkled, the curly-collared, give no fucks. Please avoid us at all costs. If we are finding life too short to besmooth our crumpled fabrics then trust us, we have even less time to deal with arseholes like you. Go flatten a pair of socks.

cardibach · 13/09/2021 11:42

@Embroidery

Irons sure are emotive!

Its just a domestic appliance. Ffs

My parents were very anti iron but liked to buy new clothes then wondered why the clothes never looked as good after they'd washed and not ironed them. I iron but rarely buy new clothes as my clothes stay nice.
My way is better for the environment

My way is even better for the environment. I don’t iron and I rarely buy new clothes. I do t see the connection. I also don’t own a tumble drier. I also wear a lot of linen. It’s the last fabric that needs ironing as it’ll look like you haven’t in 5 mins. That’s a feature, not a bug…

I don't judge people who don't iron BTW.

@sleepylittlebunnies

I quite enjoy ironing on a Sunday evening watching TV, I find it relaxing. I always iron school uniforms as I like the kids to look smart for school. DH has polo shirt and combat trousers for work that don’t need ironing and my uniform is laundered at work. I iron bedding and most clothing. I don’t iron towels or underwear.
See - there’s the judgement. ‘I like the kids to look smart for school’. So those of us who don’t iron dot. Care how our kids look and actively want them to look like shit. Or, you know, we wash, hang out immediately and fold properly and nothing has more creases in than it will have anyway once the child has worn it in the bus with a back pack…
cardibach · 13/09/2021 11:48

@RampantIvy

I don't think it is a badge of honour to not own an iron or do any ironing.

I don't understand the sneery attitude that some mumsnetters have towards people who want to or have to look smart.

I don’t understand the sneery attitude that someone who doesn’t iron doesn’t look smart - or, in fact, that smartness is some massive virtue.
Stircraazy · 13/09/2021 11:49

I do iron sometimes - as mentioned above but I really do not care what others do. I find the smug boasting about never using an iron a bit tedious but don't really care, I hardly ever do any dusting but wouldn''t care whether others do or not. And wouldn't start a thread abou it..

cardibach · 13/09/2021 11:54

@violetbunny

People without irons - what do you do if you need to dress smartly? Like if you're going to a formal event of some kind?
I wear clothes which have been hanging and aren’t creased. What an odd question.
Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 13/09/2021 11:59

The aggression in the defensiveness of the non ironers is quite funny.

MrsBerthaRochester · 13/09/2021 12:02

I loathe ironing. I used to have to do exdh shirts and he constantly whinged at how badly ironed they were. Never offered to do it himself though. As soon as I got rid of him I got rid of the iron. My mum was horrified and gave me one for Christmas. It's still in the cupboard five years later.

cardibach · 13/09/2021 12:03

Personally I find the passive aggressive judginess of t ironies fu my, @Ihopeyourcakeisshit*
I’m not seeing any aggression from non-ironers, but ironers have called us crumpled, suggested we want our kids to look shit and said we don’t have self esteem or standards…

Ooh separating laundry is another good thread in the making. We don't and everything just gets bunged in together, but that's apparently akin to consorting with the devil!

FanFckingTastic · 13/09/2021 12:05

I'd love to not have to iron as I'm pretty crap at it and seem to put more creases in the clothes, rather than taking them out. My DH is much better but that's because he's spent most of his life wearing formal clothes so knows how to iron shirts and trousers much better than me. He's taught our teenage DS (and will be teaching the other's too) so there's enough people in the house who can iron... so that I don't have to.

Each to their own on whether to iron or not, but personally I prefer formal clothes to be ironed.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 13/09/2021 12:13

@cardibach I believe they were called arseholes.
If people make an effort to iron for a job interview or a funeral for example, they must acknowledge that to some degree it's more appropriate to look smart.
Maybe it is a virtue? I don't know, maybe it's about respect or not looking like you don't care.
I've never thought about it in this much detail.
I iron, I don't care if anyone else does, I've only ever seen iron vitriol on MN.

PalmarisLongus · 13/09/2021 12:17

Some one labelled us all common..

We responded on type..

Picked out noses, farted, scratched our arses and poured another 20/20..

Or was that just me? Smile

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 13/09/2021 12:26

I didn't see the common comment, that was unnecessary.

PalmarisLongus · 13/09/2021 12:28

To be fair, they may have been joking but I haven't seen them clarify...

See, there you go again. ‘Maybe it’s about respect’…so I’m an arrogant arsehole who doesn’t show respect if I don’t look after my clothes the way you think I should? Can you see how silly it sounds put like that? Also ‘or not looking like you don’t care” - don’t care about what? My clothes being artificially flattened? I don’t. But I think you mean about other people, as though flattening fabric means anything about how I treat/think about others.
I don’t ‘make an effort’ (again judgemental - saying I don’t care if I don’t) to iron for anything, by the way, so I don’t think it’s necessary on any level. Also I do look smart. It’s possible to look smart without ironing. Judgemental again.

saveforthat · 13/09/2021 12:40

I have an iron. I haven't used it for years. I have lots of linen and don't iron it. I'm amazed at how many people use a tumble drier. I prefer to line dry. Love drying sheets outside and then putting them back on the bed.

PalmarisLongus · 13/09/2021 12:41

@SylvanasWindrunner

Well in that case I am less offended... I'm still scratching my arse through my unironed leg coverings and crotch warmers.
Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 13/09/2021 12:43

What are you in about @cardibach at no point did I call you an arrogant arsehole.
I think it's all going a bit Pete Tong.

thecognoscenti · 13/09/2021 12:45

People who don't iron always say no one can tell. Trust me, we can, we just generally don't care. Most clothes look ten times better when ironed but if it's not a priority for you then that's absolutely fine, it's not compulsory and in the grand scheme of things it really doesn't matter.
