Period and….balloon bursting? TMI warning

I know IABU by using AIBU for this but need help as feel pretty traumatised Sad

TMI warning here

Had a really bad day 2 period today. Woke up and emptied mooncup, seemed pretty normal. Popped it back in and then I started feeling what I can only imagine are contractions (although as name suggests never actually been preggos before so what do I know!) crippling pain that at one point I was on the floor doubled over almost crying. Iboprofun didn’t even slightly ease it.

Went to bathroom, mooncup was empty and it felt like my body was pushing it out and it was too painful to put back in so I used a pad instead. Whole day of extreme pain passed with no blood. Started to wonder if I was going to be in a headline saying “I didn’t know I was pregnancy until I gave birth on the toilet” Hmm or maybe if it was something else and I should see a doctor.

Come dinner time, I felt what can only be described as a balloon pop inside me and a hot gush from my vag all the way down my legs. Run to bathroom, blood EVERYWHERE Envy had to get in the shower and wash all my clothes.

Again, I am so sorry for this level of info but I feel a bit traumatised and confused about what happened. Has this happened to anyone before? Should I see a doc to make sure I still have both my ovaries? Blush

I had polyps in the past and they could cause similar sensations when they passed. Worth getting it checked. A mirena coil sorted me out.

Ohmych · 12/09/2021 21:26

This sounds like what happened when I had a miscarriage. The horrendous pain and the popping was my waters breaking. I didn't know your waters break with a miscarriage at 9 weeks until it happened.

forinborin · 12/09/2021 21:29

OP, I second earlier posters - I had very similar with a cyst. Only that the bleeding probably wasn't the period, but the cyst leaking.
Did you pass anything that looked like a piece of tissue?

TheLeadbetterLife · 12/09/2021 21:32

Something similar to this happened to me a few months ago. I hadn’t experienced anything like it since my teens.

Horrendous pain - contractions I suppose (never had children so I can’t compare, but it came in waves every couple of minutes for a good hour or so, and was unbearable). I was physically sick from the pain. I took a codeine but it didn’t do anything.

A few hours later my period started properly (just spotting until then) and was much heavier than normal (it’s usually very light). Maybe I did pass a clot or something.

I’ve been so afraid of experiencing the pain again that if I feel even the slightest cramps around that time now, I pop a co-codamol straight away.

ViceLikeBlip · 12/09/2021 21:32

I'd say you defo need to speak to the GP even if this particular episode settles quickly- I'd guess it was a clot, probably caused by the pill (I've only ever passed big clots like that when breastfeeding, but it was exactly as you described. Although the "pop" really felt more like a slithery "plop" as the clot came out 🤢 Not dissimilar to passing a placenta)

notevenamum1 · 12/09/2021 21:33

@forinborin didn’t notice any tissue but there was a lot happening so high chance I may have missed it.

Can I please ask what happened after? How did you know it was a cyst? Did you go see a doctor or was it just a one off that never happened again?

Been on hold to 111 for 55 mins now. Close to giving up.

It's always wise to do a pregnancy test to check for that if you are sexually active regardless of how effective you think your contraception is. Accidents happen.
What you described sounds almost exactly like my 12 week miscarriage although I was passing solid matter, not just blood. (sorry)

It was horrendously painful, as painful or more painful than contractions giving birth. Unable to walk painful. Massive blood loss.
Please do a pregnancy test.

TheWoleb · 12/09/2021 21:36

Have you had Pfizer jab recently?
(I'm not an anti-vaxxer. Been quite vocal on here about getting the vaccine!)
But, after I had Pfizer my period was weeks late and it felt you describe. Lots of pain and felt similar to contractions I had during my two labours. And the flooding felt like a pop/large push and then I flooded a lot of blood all down my legs. I'm very very single so zero chance of a pregnancy.
It happened again after my 2and pfizer dose so must have been that.
I've been totally fine since!

HerculesMulligan · 12/09/2021 21:37

Hang on in there, OP, don't end the call. Definitely worth you getting a medical opinion soon, I think. x

SylvanasWindrunner · 12/09/2021 21:37

I had similar - not quite that level of pain but quite bad period pains and no bleeding, and then I sat on the loo and I felt the clot come out and there was a rush of blood. It was just like a normal period again after that. I definitely 100% wasn't pregnant. And it hasn't ever happened again. It was a bit freaky at the time though!

Bodies are weird.

AntiSocialDistancer · 12/09/2021 21:38

Ah pop the phone on speakerphone whilst you wait Flowers

notevenamum1 · 12/09/2021 21:39

@RVN123 so sorry that happened to you. Will definitely get a pregnancy test tomorrow.

I was under monitoring for it before (used to have really bad and painful periods and mid cycle bleeding - hence the original referral). They could not decide whether to take it out or not, so it was "watchful waiting" for a couple of months. After it burst, I was operated on within 12 hours, as they were concerned about possible peritonitis and there was still a bit of it left in a "twisted" state. It was a keyhole surgery, so I was back to normal within 24 hours as well.

notevenamum1 · 12/09/2021 21:40

@TheWoleb I have had 2 doses of pfizer and my period following both doses was very late and very heavy but this one came on time…

notevenamum1 · 12/09/2021 21:41

@forinborin that sounds scary! I’ve never had mid cycle bleeding so wonder if it was more likely to be a stuck clot

Thank you. It was a long time ago.
I read a statistic that said that 25% of women have a miscarriage at some point in their lives, and never know it because it happens at the time their period was due and they write it off as a bad period. They never test.

I hope you get some answers and feel better soon. It's scary to see so much blood coming out of your body so you must have got a shock too.

Homemadearmy · 12/09/2021 21:43

I had the same thing happen to me a few years ago op. But I was in early 40s so thought it was something to do with the menopause and never got looked at. I had a few months with crippling cramps. But once I stopped using the mooncup it never happened again

PassTheDutchyUpYrLeftBackside · 12/09/2021 21:50

Gosh, very scary, OP. So sorry about the pain and everything else.

As I am reading the responses, it just struck me that as women, we are so used to putting up with unpredictable / unanswered / terrifying and damn excruciatingly painful things with our bodies, that even lying on the floor pain, an internal noise followed by blood gushing down our legs doesn't immediately lead us to A&E 😔😔😔

I hope you feel better soon OP xx

Cyberattack · 12/09/2021 21:51

Something very similar happened to me once. I was away from home at the time, so did nothing about it. Period finished off normally after that.

Looking back, I think it was the start of the perimenopause when my periods started to go out of sync after being like clockwork for years.

ememem84 · 12/09/2021 21:51

I was just going to ask if you’ve been vaccinated. It’s seemingly a very common side effect of the Pfizer jab that periods afterwards are horrendous. Less common with moderna (which I had) but still happens to me.

Really heavy but short periods. Sigh.

I hope everything goes well for you. I think, in general, anything passing through the cervix will cause quite a lot of contraction-like pain, a stuck clot probably too. From others' description of it, I am glad to have never experienced that!

Do stay on the line, it won't be much longer I'd think. Hopefully it's nothing serious, it could just be due to you starting the pill again but it's best to get it checked. If you don't get through to them tonight you may have more luck mid morning tomorrow.

Was thinking the same. But even if you think about the details of for example pregnancy, it is actually a really bizarre process. Yes, beautiful and magical, but completely crazy. Perhaps it is just easier to accept our bodies as-is, not relying on any manufacturer's warranty of "proper" functioning. Smile

I get this because I get very large clots. I'd describe the pain like you have here, but like others urge you to seek help.

A&E where I am also won't let you in unless you have rung 111 and been assessed by them. My sister lost her baby on the doorstep of A&E because she thought she could just turn up. It was locked and she was told to ring 111. She nearly died. I urge anyone reading this to find out what their local A&E has in terms of procedures in place. Ambulances too triage and need to phone ahead.
