Don't like being preached at in TV shows

Is it just me? Has it always been this way? There seems to be a moral to every story. Try not to judge my TV watching habits Grin but i'm thinking Grey's Anatomy, The Good Doctor, New Amsterdam. There's probably more i'm not thinking of right now. Was it always so heavy handed on social issues?

People mentioning sci fi and zombie films as an escape, which are both generally metaphors for society and its issues...

Voyager VS Discovery though

In voyager you could interpret the moral, it enjoy it for the simple space opera escapism, in discovery it's the point of the show

@Dragonpox

I went right off doctor who for this. I just want scary monsters and lots of running around shakey sets. I don't want to be lectured every 10 minutes. It made me retreat to watching reruns of red dwarf instead.
Came on to say exactly this. Never watched Greys Anatomy, but just rewatched Nurse Jackie. Now there’s a programme with a moral theme!
DroopyClematis · 12/09/2021 21:30

It was preachy at the end of Silent Witness! Blimey!
It's like we're unable to formulate our own opinions... or maybe we're being told what opinions to have.

Zammo has a lot to answer for!

NutellaEllaElla · 12/09/2021 21:39

@LCorp

I thought that OP was on about Nutella being preached as per the username Blush I haven’t watched the others but I remember in new Amsterdam they were using Nutella as a euphemism for Max’s cancer and thought that there was something else like that in the other ones
There's not enough talk about Nutella for my liking.

I think if kids are watching stuff like Doctor who, which I kinda think it's for, then it's great to have strong moral messages

Thatsplentyjack · 12/09/2021 21:47

I absolutely love watching nature programmes, and used to really love David Attenborough. I still do, but every programme they make now gives a lecture on climate change. I obviously understand why they do it, and how important it is but sometimes I just want to watch some animals and not have to think about the impending doom of the world ending.

SunIsBehindGreySky · 12/09/2021 21:50

It's all a little like Afghanistan, loads of money raised and many working hard on the situation stays the same.

I remember back when "Do they know it's Christmas!" Came out I was told by older people that charities had been collecting for and working on the same reason back when they were small children and many of those people have died now and still these charities have not solved the problem, they don't seem to achieve much with all the resources they have had over the years, money thrown at them, how many of us had no Christmas gift to buy a goat for those less fortunate instead and so many volunteers including Prince William.

MrsLeclerc · 12/09/2021 21:50

@DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult Yes I was thinking the same thing! Every episode of those had a ‘teachable moment’ when I watched as a teen.

I can’t stand reality shows as they all seem geared to mentally destroy the contestants. On the flip side, every scripted show seems to want to delve into your beliefs and confront your own unconscious bias. This isn’t a bad thing, but sometime you just want to watch 30 mins of mindless TV without learning or growing as a human being.

Gardening, cooking and crime documentaries seem to be the only escape. I used to like home and interior shows but even they’ve started making me feel bad that I don’t have a self sustaining home that can also send surplus power to light a small town.

Was money raised for Afghanistan? I don't think gong to war on them is the same as raising money.

The David Attenborough situation is strange, the man was manipulated I think. He was invited by Obama to the White house for a meeting and soon afterwards he was invited to Davis and the next thing he was telling us all off for plastic being in the sea.

derxa · 12/09/2021 21:52

The Raccoons always had a moral message at the end but it was always funny!

I am sorry for my clumsy words, I am not the best with this type of thing. I mean putting efforts in and the situation not changing.

I will bow out as I don't want to cause upset, I forgot you can not say things online and mull over things, as you can at home.

Sir David is too smart to be manipulated, he is absolutely right about the plastic problem.
PrtScn · 12/09/2021 21:55

I stopped watching Dr Who after Peter Capaldi as it was getting a bit too much in your face with stuff like that.

Don't worry, no upset caused! Was just mulling it too, no need to bow out. Smile

Same. I was an avid fan til they started all that shit.

American TV is full of this.

"Here is how you must feel about X issue""

I remember at the time David Attenborough being so perplexed why Obama had invited him and wanted that interview. I have gone back and watched it again, putting it all into contect with what has happened since.

EastWestWhosBest · 12/09/2021 22:05

He is completely right, but it’s not me chucking it in the sea.

AlbertBridge · 12/09/2021 22:05

The latest series of This Is Us is RIDULOUS for this. It was filmed during COVID and every scene is someone tearing off their facemask to lecture somebody else about racism, adoption, transgender pronouns...

SunIsBehindGreySky · 12/09/2021 22:17

AlbertBridge

What are people doing wrong in particular regarding adoption? I knew about the others, and surrogacy and people being cross that random women are not gifting eggs and uterus for free? Are they wanting random parents to give up children to the childless because there is a lack of babies to adopt? Or are they getting cross at society because their Dad was given up for adoption by their grandmother?

Again no offense intended I can't fathom why people are being told off about adoption now too.

I know, me neither. I think the point is we all use single use plastics way too much (even David probably) a lot of which does end up in the ocean.

He has been a massive reason why straws are getting banned, companies are ditching plastic bottles of mineral water etc.
