Don't like being preached at in TV shows

Is it just me? Has it always been this way? There seems to be a moral to every story. Try not to judge my TV watching habits Grin but i'm thinking Grey's Anatomy, The Good Doctor, New Amsterdam. There's probably more i'm not thinking of right now. Was it always so heavy handed on social issues?

This is why, or one of the reasons why, Seinfeld was so good. The creators held onto their theme of 'no hugging, no moralising' -- a bracing antidote to the sickly sentimentality and preachiness that can pervade US TV comedies.

Grey’s went about it in such an awkward way. If you’ve watched it from episode one you can remember it never really covered social issues, and focused on the McSteamy drama.

A show like ER though wrote social issues into the fabric of the show from day one, and was much much better at raising awareness.

This thread lays out perfectly what happens when we enter 1984 territory. Enter the world of newspeak and thoughtcrime.

HasaDigaEebowai · 16/09/2021 09:34

This thread is also now more deletions than posts!

Cutabove · 16/09/2021 09:51

Deleting posts on a private forum is hardly thoughtcrime.

HasaDigaEebowai · 16/09/2021 09:54

I didn’t say it was. I was one of the people who reported.

Why is everything deleted?

A mix of:

'I don't like your opinion', hence I report = cancel culture

'I don't understand what you are trying to say', hence I report, rather than being respectful and taking the time to ask for clarification

And Mumsnet deleting racist comments.
HasaDigaEebowai · 17/09/2021 09:37

It was racist comments and repetition of racist comments, not cancel culture. Hmm

NutellaEllaElla · 17/09/2021 11:59

I must have missed the racist comments. I saw comments about the proportion of white and BAME people in areas of the UK compared to representation on TV. I don't agree that it has to be reflective of reality though, it's TV after all.
