Don't like being preached at in TV shows

Is it just me? Has it always been this way? There seems to be a moral to every story. Try not to judge my TV watching habits Grin but i'm thinking Grey's Anatomy, The Good Doctor, New Amsterdam. There's probably more i'm not thinking of right now. Was it always so heavy handed on social issues?

OP posts:

I've started watching coronation street on catch-up for this reason so I can fast forward the preachy bits.

dylanthedragon · 12/09/2021 20:34

I agree. I like the Shondaland programmes for having diverse strong characters and handling a whole range of issues head on. BUT the last 1 or 2 seasons its been different with long monologues about issues rather than the 'moral' being woven into the story.

Annoyedanddissapointed · 12/09/2021 20:36

@Pedalpushers

People mentioning sci fi and zombie films as an escape, which are both generally metaphors for society and its issues...Hmm
But the zombie make up at least distracts you. 😁
mustlovegin · 12/09/2021 20:38

I can't remember the name of the group, it is something similar to Moody who give businesses their credit scores. I was told if they don't do Environmental, social justice as this credit rating company demands then they can't borrow money and their credit rating does down

If this is true, it explains a lot of the nonsense we have to put up with nowadays. I wonder who is advising this credit rating agency though, who is behind all this?

Driftingblue · 12/09/2021 20:40

There is definitely a shift. Entertainment, especially sci-fi, used to come with a moral message woven carefully into the story. It was sometimes subtle because the story came first. The style today feels different. The message is the focus and plot and character development are secondary.

mustlovegin · 12/09/2021 20:41

LOL at zombie movies Grin

Cooking programmes are relatively free from this BS also

Chicchicchicchiclana · 12/09/2021 20:44

I think shows originating in the US are the biggest culprits in this.

My suggestion is - watch less TV. It's great! I only watch one show at a time (if that) and join the Mumsnet threads. A wholesome and legitimate past-time.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 12/09/2021 20:49

This has been going on since as long as I can remember. I grew up in the era of Blossom, Fresh Prince, Party of Five This So Called Life, Saved By The Bell, Teen Angel etc. Every single one of them had a discussion towards the end of the programme where whatever had happened taught everyone a lesson 🤣🤣 I actually notice it far less these days.

It's definitely worse now, and I hate it too. Netflix is awful for it, IMO.
pecanmix · 12/09/2021 20:51

I stopped greys because it was just so irritating.

Annoyedanddissapointed · 12/09/2021 20:51

I am greatly enjoying Prime's selection of low budget (like 1-5mil kind if thing, for comparison Avengers End Game had 356 mil, so imagine the difference) horror movies.
Killer sofa, pteracuda vs sharktopus, Freshwater etc 😁 Usually under 90 min because they were made for certain tv channel.
Oh and fure tornado, Jurasaic Hunters... Ooooh. Beautiful. All of them. Great to throw in something from The Asylum and their mockbusters. I wish they made a proper TV series. I wonder what would they take a piss out of.

Just in case you fancy a change😂

LCorp · 12/09/2021 20:56

I thought that OP was on about Nutella being preached as per the username Blush I haven’t watched the others but I remember in new Amsterdam they were using Nutella as a euphemism for Max’s cancer and thought that there was something else like that in the other ones

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 12/09/2021 20:58

@Demelza82

Get a grip, anything vaguely moral and decent seems to amount to preaching according to people like you.
What would be moral and decent is not having a pop at the OP telling them to get a grip
AuntMasha · 12/09/2021 20:58

@wheresmyshoe

Even in The Archers today there was a hideous clunky inserted nudge (more like brick in the face) about why pregnant women should get the covid vaccine. I'm so very pro vax but I absolutely cringed at such a painfully obvious moralistic insert.
I used to be an Archers listener but stopped listening about 5 years ago post Helen and Rob. Topical issues of the day, shoehorned into the programme with such lack of subtlety you could see the joins, were par for the course back then too.

Have you seen Llamageddon. If not, do so immediately.
RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 12/09/2021 21:00

Tj hooker was just the worst for this, it wasn’t even subtle

Annoyedanddissapointed · 12/09/2021 21:01

@DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult i saw begining and now it's on my list to continue when I know I won't peeyself laughing.😂😂😂 IT'S AMAZING

MinesAMassiveSalad · 12/09/2021 21:01

Yes to cooking programmes!

IvorHughJarrs · 12/09/2021 21:07

It's not just American programmes, some UK ones like Silent Witness are guilty too, drives me mad as well

Lotusmonster · 12/09/2021 21:08

Bit of a tangent..but I get sick of Greg Wallace and Lisa Tarbuck constantly telling me how to eat and shop well for less….please just bog off both of you!

They didn't say who was behind the financial credit rating company. As I say I didn't bother checking out what they said was true and I can't remember the name now, so I can't guarantee this is correct. It did make sense though why companies are happy to loose custom, they weight it up against access to credit and the loss in custom costs them less.

Dragonpox · 12/09/2021 21:13

I went right off doctor who for this. I just want scary monsters and lots of running around shakey sets. I don't want to be lectured every 10 minutes.
It made me retreat to watching reruns of red dwarf instead.

I cannot understand how Greg Wallace gets work, he must have some serious connections because he's the slimiest and most annoying presenter I've ever seen and that includes David Dickinson.
SunIsBehindGreySky · 12/09/2021 21:19

and that includes David Dickinson Grin

Michael Landon had a nice way of doing this in Little House, he took it too far in Highway.
