AIBU about magic mushrooms in the dining room

Aaahh, so here it goes, I am deeply convinced I am not unreasonable but am prepared to be told otherwise.

In a nutshell: DH is growing magic mushrooms in the dining room. We have kids, I don't think it's right to grow psychedelic drugs in the house. He strongly disagrees and thinks I'm totally unreasonable to object.

I get that magic mushrooms have all sorts of health benefits, micro dosing etc, and it's not like he's running a meth lab but still, I'm not comfortable with a mushroom patch in my dining room. This kind of stuff has no place in a family home.

Am I being really uptight and awkward about this? AIBU to object?

Is it the morality or the safety aspect you're concerned with?

It would piss me off too. Some things are best kept out of children's view.

QueenBee52 · 12/09/2021 20:55

Are you saying that a few magic mushrooms are the same as being a heroine addict? If you are then that’s a very strange statement.

Magic mushrooms are fine in small amounts and grow naturally

As do Poppies ....

Rubytinsleslippers · 12/09/2021 20:56

They are a class A drug. It really doesn't matter what he thinks or if your mates say 'its only mushrooms ' legally they are a class A. Not a bit of weed, or whatever but you are allowing your kids near class A drugs. If / when your child takes it accidentally or mentions it at school the police / social work will get involved, never mind the potential harm to a child. FFS.

It seems the perennial question of "Are you on glue?" has been answered here. Mumsnet is in fact on mushrooms.

BMW6 · 12/09/2021 21:06

Is he OK to leave Ibroprofen, Paracetamol, Alcohol or weed on a table within reach of his children?

Autumngoldleaf · 12/09/2021 21:20

Can someone explain what the hell micro dosing is

AliceWo · 12/09/2021 21:24

It's taking a very small amount of a psychedelic eg LSD or mushrooms, about 1/10 of a trip dose. You don't feel any psychedelic effects from it as its so small.

You take it every 2-3 days and some people believe it increases their creativity or helps their mental health. The effects of microdosing aren't yet proven though.

They are a class A drug.

@Snowisfallinghere

If you take away the judgement over the drug/psychedelic aspect, it is no different from any other plant that might have undesirable effects when consumed by children. There are many common houseplants which are toxic for children. Personally I'm not concerned by this as my children aged 4 and 7 have enough understanding not to touch and eat plants or mushrooms that I've told them could be poisonous. Daffodils contain toxic alkaloids that can cause severe vomiting, would you worry about having those in your living room?
Kids are less likely to start crunching on the bunch of flowers in a vase than they are to eat something they 'know' is edible because they have mushrooms in their dinner or they see their Dad eating.

I've only known one kid to try eating a Daff, and that was in response to a dare. It wasn't pretty.

Rubyupbeat · 12/09/2021 21:36

They are a class A drug, is your husband stupid?

OneTC · 12/09/2021 21:46

Slightly easier to impress on the kids to 'never eat ornamental houseplants', than to 'never eat the mushrooms that daddy eats, they aren't like the ones we eat in our dinner'.

Slightly off topic but we laid new turf in our garden at the beginning of summer and after the rain there was mushrooms everywhere, I swear they were magic mushrooms? Do they grow in newly laid grass turf?

No they don't. They only grow in land then has been undisturbed for many, many years.
stairgates · 12/09/2021 22:22

Thanks Slippy :)

MephistophelesApprentice · 12/09/2021 22:24

He should keep it in the airing cupboard, it's a much better growth environment as long as you spray it regularly.

VaguelyInteresting · 12/09/2021 22:25

I am hugely amazed by the high level of tolerance on MN for magic mushrooms, given the amount of pearl clutching about weed.

Did Nigella do a magic mushroom eisotto recipe or something? Is that why you’re all

VaguelyInteresting · 12/09/2021 22:25

... so down with it?

AntiSocialDistancer · 12/09/2021 22:27

How old are your kids?!

Marmelace · 12/09/2021 22:32

I know I'm being that person. But who is going to be looking after the kids when he is enjoying them? And I'm someone who has dabbled in the past. Had a wild trippy orgasmic weekend romp years ago in Glasgow. But I'd never have had them or taken them anywhere near my kids.

Marmelace · 12/09/2021 22:33

Gawd I feel old and bored all of a sudden!

OneMoreStitch · 12/09/2021 22:47

Incredibly irresponsible and selfish of your husband. He's an absolute idiot, in my very humble opinion, if he doesn't see a problem with this. I'd move the damned things elsewhere myself, if he won't, and if moved them back, I'd flush them down the toilet.

user7012893145776 · 12/09/2021 22:58

Can't he grow them outside? Preferably in a locked shed up high?

How are they even growing well inside.

Saladd0dger · 12/09/2021 23:06

Considering the growing conditions I doubt they are magic mushrooms. I am how ever prepared to test them out for you. If it really is shrooms you could make a bit of ££. Make me a cup of shroom brew and I’ll tell you if the really are magic. If they aren’t I’ll probably die
