AIBU about magic mushrooms in the dining room

Aaahh, so here it goes, I am deeply convinced I am not unreasonable but am prepared to be told otherwise.

In a nutshell: DH is growing magic mushrooms in the dining room. We have kids, I don't think it's right to grow psychedelic drugs in the house. He strongly disagrees and thinks I'm totally unreasonable to object.

I get that magic mushrooms have all sorts of health benefits, micro dosing etc, and it's not like he's running a meth lab but still, I'm not comfortable with a mushroom patch in my dining room. This kind of stuff has no place in a family home.

Am I being really uptight and awkward about this? AIBU to object?

WTF?

FFS, throw them out. And consider cleaning up the broken glass and used needles at the same time… Hmm

NeverDropYourMooncup · 12/09/2021 18:31

@WetWeekends

Plus I very much doubt the dining room is the only room in the house suitable for growing them. I wouldn’t want the children to tell anyone either that “Daddy grows mushrooms in the dining room”.
DD told the teacher that Mummy grew mushrooms in her wardrobe. Well, as she was six, it came out as 'Mummy growed shrooms in her wardobe''.

Yep. Chestnut Mushrooms from a kit sold for £2.99 in Woolworths. They were lovely.

Marlouse · 12/09/2021 18:34

This really is the weirdest thing I have ever read on here.
No, of course he shouldn’t be doing this. Why are his drugs more important then the safety of his kids? Why would he risk one of the kids going into a bad trip. And if that would happen, you wouldn’t really be able to go to the doctor with a drugged up child, now would you. They will call cps on you. Is he not even worried in the slighest about this stuff?

MurielSpriggs · 12/09/2021 18:35

Are they accessible to the kids? You haven't said, and that seems to be crucial.

Snowisfallinghere · 12/09/2021 18:36

If you take away the judgement over the drug/psychedelic aspect, it is no different from any other plant that might have undesirable effects when consumed by children. There are many common houseplants which are toxic for children. Personally I'm not concerned by this as my children aged 4 and 7 have enough understanding not to touch and eat plants or mushrooms that I've told them could be poisonous. Daffodils contain toxic alkaloids that can cause severe vomiting, would you worry about having those in your living room?

Slightly easier to impress on the kids to 'never eat ornamental houseplants', than to 'never eat the mushrooms that daddy eats, they aren't like the ones we eat in our dinner'.

@Ionlydomassiveones

Aren’t these the same small thin mushrooms that grow on a lawn? I didn’t think that they were particularly dangerous or ‘druggy’ in their natural form? Or maybe I’m old and things have changed since the 80s when I had school friends that told me that!
Nope. You're talking about Liberty Caps (psilocybe semilanceata) which are the only UK native species of psychedelic mushroom and can't be cultivated indoors. Your school friends were wrong, they are just as potent when fresh. The kits that you can buy for growing indoors are all foreign species.
LaikO · 12/09/2021 18:55

I wouldn't have them in the house at all, or anywhere near my kids.

What do you mean used needles?

Are you saying that a few magic mushrooms are the same as being a heroine addict? If you are then that’s a very strange statement.

Magic mushrooms are fine in small amounts and grow naturally. Eating a few and having a bit of a trip isn’t the end of the world abs certainly isn’t life destroying in the way heroine is. But obviously they shouldn’t be anywhere that kids could possibly get hold of them. In the same way you wouldn’t leave a toddler alone with an open bottle of whisky.

Same.

Thanks for the thread OP, you've reminded me that the season is almost upon us.
It will soon be time to go out on picking missions again, there's nothing quite like free completely organic drugs.

“Some days when I come on here and read the drivel people post I am convinced I am living in some sort of parallel universe.

But carry on as it is hugely entertaining.

Couldn't OP stick her foot out as DH is walking past and give him a bad trip?

I couldn't agree more.”

I’m baffled by this, is this because you both feel bad trips don’t happen to anyone, ever? Or because you think mushrooms can’t cause them?

malificent7 · 12/09/2021 19:41

I've done mushrooms...had a bad trip...horrific. what is he thinking and what do you see in him?!

Demelza82 · 12/09/2021 19:42

How have you let it get this far???????

Chloemol · 12/09/2021 19:49

They are drugs, and should not be grown anywhere

mintbiscuit · 12/09/2021 19:56

Ok, I might be missing point of thread completely but can someone explain HOW you can grow magic mushrooms indoors? How do you even get the start up fungus to grow? How do you know they aren’t poisonous?

I’m naive clearly!!

AliceWo · 12/09/2021 19:58

There is some conflating in this thread of mushrooms with other class As like heroin and meth.

Mushrooms were legal until about 20 years ago, and in my view should still be legal or at least just a Class C. They are non-addictive and not physically harmful. There is a strong chance that in a few years the psychedelic chemical in mushrooms will be available through the NHS for psychedelic therapy for people with mental health problems like depression and anxiety.

Until then, people have to make do with the less than ideal circumstances of growing, getting from a dealer or picking, and taking without necessarily doing the research to know the correct knowledge of set, setting and dosage.

Don't assume the OP's DH is a loser, drug addict, '12 year old', because he wants to get the health benefits of taking mushrooms. The growing in the dining room/house with DC is a different matter.

Frogsonglue · 12/09/2021 20:04

Not really the point, but would any of your kids seriously eat some weird looking skinny mushrooms that are growing in the kitchen? I mean, I struggle to get my kids to eat any veg at all even when I've made it really tasty Confused mushrooms just make them do sick noises, so I can't imagine they'd randomly start eating them if they found them. I do actually have a bag of dried mushrooms in a bag in a drawer and I know with 100% certainty neither of my kids will be tempted to eat them. They taste and smell pretty rank.

You can buy kits online that come with sterile growing medium and a syringe full of spores.
Crunchymum · 12/09/2021 20:28

@FromEnglandWithLove

You don't answer the many posters who ask if they are out of sight and reach of the DC

Who knew MN was so on board with magic mushrooms? This place is just so weird sometimes!!!

TolkiensFallow · 12/09/2021 20:31

No you can’t have illegal drugs in the dining room on display

Somuddled · 12/09/2021 20:41

Don't worry, if he is trying to grow them out in the open they won't grow anyway so nothing to worry about. They need to be somewhere dark. If what you mean is he is growing them in a cupboard in the dining room, then get him to put a lock on the cabinet.

Ibelieveinghosts · 12/09/2021 20:44

Firstly I suspect the police and social services would be far more interested if your child arrived at A&E having ingested class A drugs rather than accidents munched a daffodil. So whoever made that comparison is a little off the mark, for that reason alone nothing like that should be in the house with children.

I know micro dosing is attracting a lot of interest esp with mental health but not convinced this should be done yourself.

I know quite a few people who do mushroom ceremonies. My concern with people who do these regularly is that whilst the mushrooms themselves might not be addictive the altered states of consciousness they bring seem to be somewhat addictive. Something I find very interesting is trying to create a similar altered state of consciousness through non-drug means. But maybe as Huxley points out that route is not available to everyone.

Somuddled · 12/09/2021 20:48

You don't use soil, you use a growing medium. Sometimes like perlite and rice flour. Make a sort of patty to grow them on and sterilise everything to prevent any unwanted stuff growing. And buy a tube of spores. It requires darkness, humidity and lots of patience. Obviously more complicated than that but the end result is whatever mushroom you wanted to grow. Same method for hallucinogenic mushrooms as it is for regular ones.
WorcesterWombat · 12/09/2021 20:52

I would query how SS would react if they were ever accessed by your child or someone else’s.
Personals I feel it’s totally unsuitable to be growing an illegal drug in a family home. It would be a deal breaker for me.
