AIBU about magic mushrooms in the dining room

Aaahh, so here it goes, I am deeply convinced I am not unreasonable but am prepared to be told otherwise.

In a nutshell: DH is growing magic mushrooms in the dining room. We have kids, I don't think it's right to grow psychedelic drugs in the house. He strongly disagrees and thinks I'm totally unreasonable to object.

I get that magic mushrooms have all sorts of health benefits, micro dosing etc, and it's not like he's running a meth lab but still, I'm not comfortable with a mushroom patch in my dining room. This kind of stuff has no place in a family home.

Am I being really uptight and awkward about this? AIBU to object?

Some days when I come on here and read the drivel people post I am convinced I am living in some sort of parallel universe.

But carry on as it is hugely entertaining.

Couldn't OP stick her foot out as DH is walking past and give him a bad trip?

I guess that’s directed at me? I can assure you I have seen people having a bad trip from mushrooms and LSD. A child could be terrified, they’d have no idea what was happening.

your husband appears to be a twat and not a FunGuy.

Ha ha brilliant!
annacondom · 12/09/2021 17:34

I also have seen someone have a bad trip with mushrooms. Thankfully it put him us off ever taking them again.

WetWeekends · 12/09/2021 17:40

I also have a family friend who developed a serious mental health condition after taking LSD at Uni. His Consultant Psychiatrist said he would probably have developed it anyway later in life, but the LSD definitely triggered it at that time.
One of my parents friends, in their 20’s ended up being sectioned for months, after taking mushrooms and not sleeping for days.
I’ve also seen friends begging to go to A&E after taking recreational drugs and having panic attacks.
I’ve also of course seen people having the most fun they’ve ever had using drugs. They’re certainly not something I’d allow near any children ever though!

WetWeekends · 12/09/2021 17:42

Plus I very much doubt the dining room is the only room in the house suitable for growing them.
I wouldn’t want the children to tell anyone either that “Daddy grows mushrooms in the dining room”.

KingsleyShacklebolt · 12/09/2021 17:45

Is he 12? What a loser.

pecanmix · 12/09/2021 17:46

No way would I allow this in my house

chocolateorangeinhaler · 12/09/2021 17:47

Not at all. It's illegal. Not a great message to teach the kids.

If he wants to do it tell him to do it outside of the house.

DrSbaitso · 12/09/2021 17:47

No, you're not unreasonable not to want Class A drugs being produced in the family home.

abstractprojection · 12/09/2021 17:50

A friend grows and his wife won’t let him in the house since they’ve had kids, not even a different room because of the spores, and though he’d like to (in a closed off room) he agrees and grows outside now. Has one of those cheap bookshelves greenhouses covered for darkness.

They both really know about this stuff so I don’t think her asking was uninformed, or that he would have agreed if he thought it was

As for the same room no! The risk of the kids consuming some, also the stuff it’s grown in can be quite toxic.

Nonicknamesforcatapillars · 12/09/2021 17:53

No he shouldn’t be growing then in the house where the kids could get hold of them.

I actually have nothing against magic mushrooms in moderation, but the fact you have kids means that growing them in the house is an absolute no no.

InFiveMins · 12/09/2021 17:54

I wouldn't like this either OP. I would be very concerned about inquisitive children near them.

CreamFirstThenJamOnTop · 12/09/2021 17:56

Didn’t even know you could grow them at home, I’ve only ever seen them growing wild. But I suppose it’s quite easy.

I’m not completely against their use but they should be well away from children and not taken with kids about.

Ourlady · 12/09/2021 18:01

Your husband is a prick!

MyMummyHasGotABigBottom · 12/09/2021 18:06

As @OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow says, these are class A drugs. He could get in a LOT of trouble for doing this. To put it into context, he would be in more trouble for this than for example growing cannabis, and could easily be charged witb intent to supply. This is not the kind of thing he should be doing at all to be honest.

And to be in reach of the kids is just plain wrong on so many levels. Bloody dangerous frankly.

HalzTangz · 12/09/2021 18:11

@Hopdathelf

YABU to even allow them in a house where there are children. What are you thinking?
This!

Why on earth would you want drugs anywhere near your kids

HestersSamplerofCarrots · 12/09/2021 18:15

I’d divorce him for this.

Reloxa · 12/09/2021 18:16

Realistically police aren't going to be bothered about someone growing a tub of mushrooms in the house. And to those saying how can you have drugs near your kids - well, I hope if you think that you don't keep any alcohol in the house.

I'm rethinking my earlier reply though where I said it's ok as long as the grow tub is locked up etc away from the kids. I've grown before, but I don't have DC. I do think it's too risky - physically it's not dangerous, but mentally it would be very scary for them if they did eat some. Even if they are locked in a tub for now, they will need to be dried and then stored, which ups the risks of DC finding them.

seaandsandcastles · 12/09/2021 18:16

YANBU. I would be chucking him out and calling the police, and I wouldn’t be allowing a drug addict around my kids either.

Mushrooms aren't addictive.
seaandsandcastles · 12/09/2021 18:24

Mushrooms aren't addictive.

@Reloxa So? Anyone using drugs is clearly not fit to be a parent. So I wouldn’t be allowing them near my child.
