To think the royal family are a bloody embarrassment

Just that - why are we paying for this bunch when we could be spending the money on essential services? Let the Queen continue then after her just get rid of the whole bloody lot of them. We have and alleged paedo, a whinging multi millionaire in his 30's moaning constantly, an allegedly corrupt heir to the throne meeting dodgy russians for money....... just go, enough. Seriously - this is all Jeremy Kyle for poshos.

@Autumngoldleaf

Lizzie I agree that made me feel sick that our police are being made to be complicit in this hideous manner dodging serious serious claims.
Couldn’t agree more and am quite frankly horrified that the media haven’t made more of this . So many people in authority staying silent and looking the other way

I've never understood the tourism thing either. I don't (until this recent episode) particularly disapprove of the Royal family. I think being able to bring out the Queen as head of state probably does have value in certain diplomatic situations in a way that a President wouldn't, but tourism? It's not like the tourists meet the Royal family, they come to see the palaces and the history, which would still be there.

The way the who Andrew thing is being dealt with by the Royals is astonishing. I'd live to hear the kinds of conversations going in with advisors. Do they genuinely believe if he can hide long enough it will go away? Is anyone telling them this is what could bring (accelerate) the end of the monarchy? It feels like that to me but maybe most people don't care like MNetters do?

longwayoff · 14/09/2021 08:13

'They pay for themselves'. GrinGrinGrin Time to buy a history book.

Tinpotspectator · 14/09/2021 08:26

The nasty piece of work will get away with it. The judge says they have a week to serve papers. Sorely he'll just hide for a week at home with locked gates. It's so obvious he's guilty because, apart from anything else, his other argument is " anyway, I've already paid her off!"

HarrisonStickle · 14/09/2021 09:10

@Charlene91

We aren't paying for them, they pay for themselves through tourism etc.

I can understand the rest, but with how Harry was treated by the British press, he has every right to moan IMHO.

Wouldn't want to be in his shoes tbh, I feel so sorry for him and Meghan.

Rubbish. They cost tens of millions of pounds. And it's not as if they're otherwise not well off. The Queen is one of the richest people in the world, much of her money is held offshore in tax havens. She's a very successful grifter, I'll give her that. It's about time all of them below retirement age went out and got jobs. Some of them do, Anne and Andrew's children work, Edward's better do when they're old enough. William and Kate seem to be getting stuck into the grifting gravy train when they're of working age and should have careers.
Puzzledandpissedoff · 14/09/2021 09:47

Cringeworthy that the royals are now arguing papers have not been properly served

But what did anyone expect?

Not being a lawyer I've no idea if the papers were correctly served or not, but if it hadn't been this it would have been something else (personally I've been expecting an "illness" that prevents Andrew being available)

Did anyone really think any of them would engage in something they'd rather not?

Sloth66 · 14/09/2021 09:54

Depressingly I suspect he’ll lie low and ultimately get away with it. Protected by his family and mother.
How can we even have respect for these people, let alone look up to them?

DoncasterHombre · 14/09/2021 10:10

That vote by OP has been/is holding steady at about 70% YANBU which means 7 out of 10 people would get rid. Not sure how reflective of the UK general public it is as a whole but I doubt it's too far off the mark.

As much as I'd do away with them immediately (I'd strip them off everything bar a few quid for a deposit on a rental property and to feed themselves long enough to get a job and pay their own way. They've had the finest and best education money can buy - and, of course, they all fancy themselves of being ever so clever and better than the rest of us - so they should be capable of working things out for themselves), we need to be asked the question when the queen dies. This is an interesting watch about Charles if you have the time:

TheKeatingFive · 14/09/2021 10:16

How are you supposed to serve papers to someone who never answers the door and has a substantial security team around him?!?

2021Vision · 14/09/2021 10:23

I he gets away with this will people now just be able to hide to avoid papers and get away with crimes? i am very surprised that a US judge has only given them a week, it's obvious that they are all hiding.

It really is absolutely disgusting. I suspect however that they will put a media blackout on this just like they did with William.

ChurchofLatterDayPaints · 14/09/2021 10:29

Too late, damage is done. The whole world is watching PA continue to behave like the arrogant cowardly twat he's always been. The queen's helping him run away from it all so that's her reputation down the toilet as well.

SaturdaySpread · 14/09/2021 10:32

Why do you need to "serve papers"?

What's the actual reason/history for it and is it still relevant?

ChurchofLatterDayPaints · 14/09/2021 10:40

So that all parties can say they've been formally notified of what's going on and so you can prepare your defence on the basis of what the plaintiff is complaining about.

In the days of trial by media though, it just makes you look like a tit if you pretend you weren't aware, or run away as in Andy's case .

lindaJones1448093415 · 14/09/2021 10:43

Hey dont say that about the queen she may be useless not but she is fuck1ng leng innit i would eat cheeses off her chest

Sloth66 · 14/09/2021 10:45

So hiding away on a vast estate means he can’t be served papers. He’s demonstrated he’s above the law.

Brefugee · 14/09/2021 10:51

in any case it’s like saluting in the armed forces - to recognise the rank, not the person.

Saluting, yes, and have done enty in my past life in the military.

I have only curtseyed once (more of a bob) when I gave her mah flowers when I was about 5. They don't have "rank" because that has to be "earned" (excluding sproggy Ruperts that most people I knew when serving swerved in order to avoid saluting them) and being pushed out of a royal vagina just doesn't confer rank for me.

dreamingbohemian · 14/09/2021 11:25

Why can't they serve papers to his attorneys?

Otherwise it's a joke, isn't it

Ribblechips · 14/09/2021 11:26

Yes I have always found it deeply uncomfortable when the RF have (a) bestowed awards, merits and patronages on each other and (b) they parade about wearing medals they (mostly) haven't earned.

Blossomtoes · 14/09/2021 12:15

The Queen is one of the richest people in the world

She’s not even one of the richest people in the UK according to The Times Rich List.

Blossomtoes · 14/09/2021 12:17

Not sure how reflective of the UK general public it is as a whole but I doubt it's too far off the mark

Way off the mark. Republicanism is at its height in the 18-24 age group and only 30% of them want it.

Paperplain · 14/09/2021 12:26

@dreamingbohemian

It's not unusual for solicitors to not accept service of papers. You would usually find out whether or not they accept service though before serving.
AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 14/09/2021 12:26

I think the whole tourism justification thing is quite short-lived. I can see why millions of people would want to glimpse Buckingham palace or Windsor right now, while the Queen is there. She's met every single prime minister since Churchill; she's totally iconic and an undeniable draw. Will people be desperate to visit once Prince Charles is in residence, though? 😬 Once the Queen dies, the entire sacred mystery of state will die with her. That's what I think, anyway. People will view the palaces as historic and redundant sites.

TheKeatingFive · 14/09/2021 12:29

I think a very large proportion of people conflate ‘approving of Elizabeth Windsor as head of state’ with ‘being a monarchist’.

I want to see what the polls look like 5 years into Charles reign. Wink

MaryMcCarthy · 14/09/2021 12:30

Tourism revenue would increase significantly if the Queen was moved out of Buckingham Palace and they let punters walk around inside. The fact is France has more tourists than us and they killed their last king 230 years ago.

ChurchofLatterDayPaints · 14/09/2021 12:34

@Blossomtoes

41percent of that age group want an elected HoS according to this (4 months ago). yougov.co.uk/topics/arts/explore/title/British_Royal_Family

But I agree that an MN poll doesn't reflect the whole of society. Positions on here tend to become very entrenched in both camps. Vive la Republique.
