Nootkah · 10/09/2021 17:30

So it looks likely the roll out of vaccines for healthy 12-15 year olds will be agreed next week. I'm consenting, and my teen wants it.

What about you?

YABNU - Yes, Im co senting too
YABU - Nope
@edwinbear Totally. It is a worry. The emerging evidence is that riak or myocarditis is higher feom covid than from vaccination, but in both cases us tiny tiny small. As you link shows, the benefits of vaccination are much smaller in healthy teens ao its not as cut and dried as for adults. I certainly wouldnt judge you for watching and waiting!
There’s emerging research that seems to indicate vaccines are riskier than covid for teenage boys: www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/09/09/teenage-boys-risk-vaccines-covid/amp/

“Young males are six times more likely to suffer from heart problems after being jabbed than be hospitalised from coronavirus”

Mynameismargot · 10/09/2021 18:26

I'm not in the UK, my 14 year old is already fully vaccinated. He was keen to have it.

ManifestDestinee · 10/09/2021 18:28

My teens are already fully vaccinated.

Geamhradh · 10/09/2021 18:30

@moregarlic
Article is behind a paywall. Can you say where that data is from please? I'd like to read it n

lljkk · 10/09/2021 18:31

I'm curious to see how things turned out if the vaccine wasn't provided. I'd like to see that, so that makes me slightly anti-jab for this group.

Not interested otherwise. 13yo DS says he wants it so I guess that counts as he has my consent.

tttigress · 10/09/2021 18:34

You do realise the JCVI don't recommend it?

OrangeTortoise · 10/09/2021 18:37

@tttigress do you realise the JCVI said the benefits of the vaccine do outweigh the risks (but only marginally)?

SweetBabyCheeses99 · 10/09/2021 18:37

Latest research published this week from University of California:

The risk of heart complications for boys aged 12-15 following the vaccine was 162.2 per million.
Meanwhile, the risk of a healthy boy needing hospital treatment owing to Covid in the next 120 days is 26.7 per million.
This means the risk they face from heart complications is 6.1 times higher than that of hospitalisation.
(Based on current rates of hospitalisations from Covid-19, which are judged to be “moderate”. During a period of low risk of hospitalisation, such as June 2021, the likelihood of heart complications rises to 22.8 times higher, and during a period of high risk, such as January 2021, the likelihood of heart complications is still 4.3 times higher.)

Myocarditis cannot be treated - heart damage is always permanent in everyone as heart muscle has no ability to repair itself. Rest and medication will ease the symptoms but the effects are there forever.

I don’t really see how it can be made much clearer 🤷🏻‍♀️ Even the JCVI couldn’t morally agree to it despite being placed under enormous political pressure.

Getawaywithit · 10/09/2021 18:46

Ds 15 is already eligible (severe learning disability) but is still waiting for his

Mine is on the new 12-15 priority list and there seems to be nothing at all out there as to what the timescales might be. I do think, however, if they agree all 12-15 year olds, they will just roll it into schools which will likely be quicker than waiting for the GPs to manage it.

Howshouldibehave · 10/09/2021 18:48

The MHRA have approved it-I’m happy with that.

Member984815 · 10/09/2021 18:50

Mine got his second one yesterday he's 14 we live in Ireland.

Talia99 · 10/09/2021 18:51

It’s already available to 12 year olds in the country where my sister lives and her child has already had the first jab. She’s a practicing paediatrician and she thinks her child getting it is the right thing to do despite a tiny rate of COVID infection in her country. In light of that, bearing in mind the UK’s rate, I have no concerns.

Ifyoudontlikeitdosomethingelse · 10/09/2021 18:53

Absolutely not.

gamerchick · 10/09/2021 18:54

Mine wants it. He wanted to do the trials for it but it was too far away.

ManifestDestinee · 10/09/2021 18:55

Myocarditis cannot be treated - heart damage is always permanent in everyone as heart muscle has no ability to repair itself. Rest and medication will ease the symptoms but the effects are there forever

This is not at all true.

Yondergoat · 10/09/2021 18:57

I was all for it, until DD 14 tested positive for Covid last month with zero symptoms. I had what I thought was a slight cold and sinusitis, and also tested positive, despite having Covid in March 2020 AND being double jabbed.

I listened to the debate on Radio 2 and the message from NICE seemed to be that on an individual level it didn't make sense to vaccinate otherwise healthy teens. Now I'm wavering.

jackstini · 10/09/2021 18:57

Mine 12 & 15 both want the vaccine and will have it

The risks to them of vaccine are so tiny compared to the risks to all of spreading it and causing issues.

They have done the research and made their own decisions but I completely back it.
The fact 97% of people hospitalised with Covid are unvaccinated and 1 in 5 are under 30 has been a big deciding factor, plus experiences with close family/friends

Vispa · 10/09/2021 19:05

My 12 year old had her first dose a few weeks ago, it was fine.

moregarlic · 10/09/2021 19:26

@Geamhradh of course:

“Research published on Thursday will prompt fresh concerns about whether the risk of the vaccine outweighs the benefits for otherwise healthy children.

A team led by Dr Tracy Hoeg at the University of California investigated the rate of cardiac myocarditis - heart inflammation – and chest pain in children aged 12-17 following their second dose of the vaccine.

They then compared this with the likelihood of children needing hospital treatment owing to Covid-19, at times of low, moderate and high rates of hospitalisation.

Researchers found that the risk of heart complications for boys aged 12-15 following the vaccine was 162.2 per million, which was the highest out of all the groups they looked at.

Evidence from studies show it is unlikely for boys to suffer either heart problems from the vaccine or be hospitalised by Covid.

The second highest rate was among boys aged 16-17 (94.0 per million) followed by girls aged 16-17 (13.4 per million) and girls aged 12-15 (13.0 per million).

Meanwhile, the risk of a healthy boy needing hospital treatment owing to Covid-19 in the next 120 days is 26.7 per million. This means the risk they face from heart complications is 6.1 times higher than that of hospitalisation.“

Below (hopefully) is the Telegraph article in full

"Teenage boys are six times more likely to suffer from heart problems from the vaccine than be hospitalised from Covid-19, a major study has found.

Children who face the highest risk of a “cardiac adverse event” are boys aged between 12 and 15 following two doses of a vaccine, according to new research from the US.

The findings come as Professor Chris Whitty, England’s chief medical officer, prepares to advise ministers on whether there is a wider benefit to society from vaccinating children.

Last week, the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) delivered its long-awaited verdict, saying the “margin of benefit” of jabbing 12- to 15-year-olds was “considered too small” and citing the low risk to healthy children from the virus.

However, Sajid Javid, the Health Secretary, said he wanted Prof Whitty and the chief medical officers from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to “consider the vaccination of 12- to 15-year-olds from a broader perspective”.

He said he would then “consider the advice from the chief medical officers, building on the advice from the JCVI, before making a decision shortly”.

Report will prompt fresh concerns over jabs for children

The study, which has not yet been peer reviewed, analysed reports of adverse effects children have suffered from the vaccine between January and June of this year.

The study looked at MRNA vaccines - such as Pfizer and Moderna - which will be particularly relevant for Britain because youngsters will not be given the AstraZeneca jab because of the increased risk of dangerous blood clots.

Last Friday, the JCVI could only recommend that jabs among 12- to 15-year-olds be extended to include children with major heart, lung, kidney, liver and neurological conditions.

But ministers are understood to be keen to give the children’s vaccine roll out the green light, and the NHS has already started recruiting thousands of vaccinators for schools."

Thank you! Brew

workwoes123 · 10/09/2021 20:03

My DS 13 was fully vaccinated a month ago: we’re in France.

Willyoujustbequiet · 10/09/2021 20:18

No. We have family history of sudden onset thrombocytopenia ( the clotting condition that has caused the deaths) and I had a horrendous reaction to AZ. On balance the vaccine is more of a risk given what I know so far.
