To ask when (or even if!!) people stopped using iPods?

OK I admit - I may/may not be in the minority here as I’ve never owned an iPod. At one staged you’d hear ‘MP3’ player being said a lot - now you don’t hear it.
So I missed all the different versions iPod Nano, Shuffle etc .
So what are your thought on this? Do some people still use them?

I still use mp3 players. I lose them a lot so prefer to keep to something cheap rather than use my phone. Plus i can clip it to my clothes rather than wrestle with a larger phone and teeny stupid womens pockets.

Have you heard vinyl is quite valuable/collectible ?

MountainDweller · 10/09/2021 22:07

I had an original iPod and I still have my touchscreen one from sometime in the 2000s. I recently rediscovered it - there are lots of CDs on there that I never transferred to my phone. So I'm using it again. Was amazed how great the battery life is compared to my phone! It's actually a similar size to my 2016 iPhone SE, just a bit slimmer. My DH has a nano that was passed onto him by a relative - useful for walks when he doesn't want to carry much. We are older though (mid and late 50s) - when I got my iPod I'm pretty sure my phone didn't play music!

Yes but VHS and iPods aren't and never will be... What's your point?

Sounds weird now saying ‘iPod’ in my head when iPads are so well known!

I had a pink iPod mini in 2004 that I bought in the USA before they even came out in the UK. I felt so, so cool but it took me about a fortnight to work out how to use the thing

I had an iPod touch in about 2009? I didn’t seem to use that for long though

A single 5+ year old article about an example. Not super compelling

There's lots of iPods of various flavours sold recently on eBay for £2-400. Many perfectly decent mobile phones cost nowhere near that price.

www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw=ipod&LH_Auction=1&LH_Complete=1&LH_Sold=1&_sop=16

Quite a significant amount for years old obsolete technology that many people might have languishing in drawers or have considered useless and thrown away.

A question for old iPod fans - do they have Bluetooth?

Wireless earbuds have been revolutionary for me, to listen to podcasts in my phone while out walking and running. I used to get tangled in the wires of wired ones or get in a mess when I wanted to take off or put on jumpers etc, but this isn't a problem with wireless ones.

But I do see people out with wired earbuds and wonder why anyone would bother any more when you can get decent Bluetooth ones from about £20. Is it because they're listening to old MP3 players without Bluetooth?

KatherineJaneway · 11/09/2021 04:31

I still use an iPod. My phone is android but I buy all my music through iTunes. IPod still works all these years later so I keep using it.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 11/09/2021 04:40

The main problem with iPods was iTunes. How I loathe thee, let me count the ways. It put me off Apple for good. When smartphones became available I made damned sure I got an Android one. I stopped using the iPod probably seven or eight years ago when my phone /the tech was good enough to stream music. The tech is much better now, I remember Spotify not working very well when I first tried it. It's good now. Amazon music which I used previously is still rather clunky.

They are good but need charging up and I often forget to do so. So have some wired earphones as back up.

Me too! Grin

This too. I do still use my iPod Classic, which has masses of storage, but for running I use a tiny mp3 from decathlon that weighs basically nothing and clips to my clothes.

I hate carrying stuff when I run, and don't usually take my phone.

OK, thanks. Mine probably last two or three weeks between charges, maybe more and I have been caught out on occasion, that's with maybe 1-2 hours use on weekdays and 3-4 on weekends. Possibly others use them more?

Doublevodka · 11/09/2021 07:31

@CovidDoesNotExistDuh, thanks for the advice. Can you tell me the best way to find someone who can look at it for me? Or any recommendations?

Jumpingintosummer · 11/09/2021 08:01

Dd(9) has an iPod. It’s linked to the family Apple Music account so 1 fee for unlimited music on five devices each month. It also has a messaging facility that’s handy as she’s too young for a phone yet.

BeaucoupFish · 11/09/2021 08:24

@BarbaraofSeville
Thanks that’s interesting
More than they cost new I think, the classic in particular, although a PP upthread has disagreed

To answer your question no they do not have Bluetooth

Coogee · 11/09/2021 08:37

To answer your question no they do not have Bluetooth

My iPod Touch does. My husband sometimes used to use a Bluetooth adapter on his Classic.

BeaucoupFish · 11/09/2021 08:44

@Coogee
The older ones don’t though,

Still use my little iPod, got it about 20 years ago, it's amazing Smile
AliMonkey · 11/09/2021 08:55

I use mine in the car - it’s permanently plugged in. Only thing is that it’s full so if I want to add more songs I have to remove some. But I’m usually just happy listening to all my old stuff!

CattyMcNips · 11/09/2021 09:09

Our DS uses our old iPod so he can listen to music and audio books but without the temptation of games!

Agree. Mine doesn't but plugged in via USB in my hire car, the car recognised the iPod and I had music on a very long journey.

BeaucoupFish · 11/09/2021 11:50

Based on what @Coogee says I’m going To try and get a Bluetooth adaptor as I currently use my iPad for listening to music but it’s limited to my YouTube playlist with intrusive adverts
