To ask when (or even if!!) people stopped using iPods?

OK I admit - I may/may not be in the minority here as I’ve never owned an iPod. At one staged you’d hear ‘MP3’ player being said a lot - now you don’t hear it.
So I missed all the different versions iPod Nano, Shuffle etc .
So what are your thought on this? Do some people still use them?

I still listen to mine but I no longer have a computer capable of adding anything to it.

SunSeaSurfGin · 10/09/2021 17:36

I got my last IPod in 2010. I think I stopped using it in like 2015. That's when I got an apple phone before that I had BlackBerrys
Although I still use the iPod when I go went to the gym

LaetitiaASD · 10/09/2021 17:41

@SpacePotato

I had to stop using my iPod nano because it wouldn't connect to windows 10 on any Machine I tried

Crap. I haven't tried connecting mine for ages since we got rid of the windows 7 desktop.
Oh well. Guess it will stuck as it is then.

I have no problem connecting my iPod classic to iTunes on my windows 10 laptop. I only use iTunes to organise MP3s I own - I don't use it to buy music or stream or anything else.
CourgetteGlutTony · 10/09/2021 17:46

I have no music on my phone and have never streamed anything.
My iPod lives in the car and comes on automatically with a random shuffle of music so I never get tired of it

BoattoBolivia · 10/09/2021 17:48

I love my iPod classic. All my music is on there, including CDs that you can't get on Spotify. I love the fact that is doesn't need the internet. We even have the old pc in the garage which is booted up once a year to upload new CDs! Unfortunately, the battery is shot, so you can only use it plugged in to the mains, which makes it almost useless. It was perfect for camping as the battery used to last forever. If I could find a way of replacing the battery, I would be forever grateful.

Our company invited someone from Apple to speak at a work event. They were explaining that they took the view that in order to make progress they couldn't be afraid to make their own products redundant, knowing that the introduction of the iPhone would mean the death of the ipod.

Siameasy · 10/09/2021 17:52

God I’d forgotten about the iPods that looked like an iPhone! And having to synch it all up with the computer!

FastFood · 10/09/2021 17:54

Most people don't even listen to mp3 anymore, it's all streaming, Spotify, Deezer, Apple Music etc...

solittletime · 10/09/2021 17:54

Use iPod nano here for teenage dds- only device they are allowed in their room at night to listen to music or podcasts. Can’t be used with WiFi or for anything else so ideal for that purpose

schnubbins · 10/09/2021 17:55

I still use my iPod that I bought in 2007 along with my iPhone. We had Silicon Valley kids visiting us a few years ago .they nearly fell over backwards when they saw my iPod still perched on my kitchen shelf.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 10/09/2021 17:58

I still have mine. It sits on a speaker/charger that can't be used for anything else and mainly enjoys a happy retirement! I have a lot of music on it though, so will put it on sometimes if I'm fed up of the radio and/or don't want to stream from my phone.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 10/09/2021 17:59

Also, I really love the clickwheel!

ToastieSnowy · 10/09/2021 18:00

I use my 80gb iPod classic, 14 years old and still going strong. It has 2 films on it too. Good piece of tech that.

TheProvincialLady · 10/09/2021 18:05

My teenage son asked for, and got, an iPod classic for his last birthday. Cost £80. He loves it. He also has a decent phone but likes iPods.

CovidDoesNotExistDuh · 10/09/2021 18:09

I still use mine. No annoying beeps, nobody bugging me. Doesn't eat my phone battery etc.

You can buy replacement batteries on ebay and swap it yourself, it's not hard. Trickiest bit is getting into the case but you get tools to do it.
BeaucoupFish · 10/09/2021 18:18

They’re tiny and you can tuck them in your bra
I still use mine

Etulosba · 10/09/2021 18:23

I still use a Classic. The music on it is stored in lossless format and played through our hifi via an external DAC.

SweetBabyCheeses99 · 10/09/2021 18:26

I used to use mine all the time still until it got stolen from my living room Angry Was either the Virgin installation man or the cleaner provided by Bizzby as they were there on the same day. Still p*ssed off at both companies despite not being able to prove which it was!

Doublevodka · 10/09/2021 18:30

My iPod classic is used all the time but has just started playing up this week and I’m devastated. Not sure if I can get it looked at or fixed! Where would I even take it? Would they laugh me out of the Apple shop?

CovidDoesNotExistDuh · 10/09/2021 19:08

@Doublevodka there are people online who will give it a new battery and swap the hard drive for you. It'll be like new after that, probably. I did it to mine and it was fabulously.

Okbye · 10/09/2021 19:14

I still regularly use my iPod Touch from 2009 😄 (I’m in my mid 30’s so not that old lol)
I had a look at Spotify a few times but it just doesn’t appeal and I quite like having a separate device for all my music.

Because of its age, I feel like my whole life (music wise) is on that iPod and I’ll be so upset if/when it packs in! My friends think I’m mad to still be using it - with wired headphones too, how tragic! But I love it, and don’t care 😁😁

HeyGepetto · 10/09/2021 19:21

I still use my iPod regularly and absolutely love it, I have a really large music collection and had always wanted an easy way to transport it and make playlists, i’m really disappointed they’ve become pretty much obsolete. I have way too much music for my phone and don’t want to be reliant on WiFi, it basically met my needs perfectly and it feels like we’re moving away from that again for me.

Anonymous48 · 10/09/2021 19:30

@thegcatsmother

Err, because you have an iPod but don't want a smart phone?
Yep, that's exactly it. My husband still uses his iPod all the time to listen to podcasts because he doesn't have (and doesn't want) a smart phone.
Anonymous48 · 10/09/2021 19:41

@thisplaceisweird

I'm actually gobsmacked people still use them! Anyone still use VHS? Jeessus
Yes, occasionally. Is there something wrong with that? Much better than constantly replacing devices when the newest version comes out, and certainly not something you should be judging people for.
