To ask when (or even if!!) people stopped using iPods?

OK I admit - I may/may not be in the minority here as I’ve never owned an iPod. At one staged you’d hear ‘MP3’ player being said a lot - now you don’t hear it.
So I missed all the different versions iPod Nano, Shuffle etc .
So what are your thought on this? Do some people still use them?

I still have an iPod nano I use occasionally Grin I don’t have enough memory on my phone to have music on here because I have too many photos, so for music I either use the Spotify app or my iPod.

My nephews and niece have iPods. They're too young for an actual phone so it's kind of a go between.

LBirch02 · 10/09/2021 11:48

Nomoreusernames - the separation between those 3 things on the pre iPhone days - yeah I see how this led to the iPods demise

I loved my Creative Zen, it travelled all over the place with me Smile

Like PPs I ripped CDs and uploaded the MP3s, and not all are available on streaming sites. I'm going back home soon, will have to see if I can get it to work with my laptop - probably issues with outdated drivers, but we'll see. It'll be like catching up with an old friend Grin

I loved my iPod. Still have one but it doesnt charge properly any more ☹

safariboot · 10/09/2021 11:50

Yeah, I'd say late 2000s/early 2010s. Smartphones replaced them.

The music-only iPods were discontinued in 2017. The iPod Touch is basically an iPhone minus the phone bit.

lljkk · 10/09/2021 11:51

I use an ipod, especially to listen to podcasts at night, rather than keep running down phone battery. I originally got it when I thought it would be only way to listen to music at work, and meant for it to stay at office all the time.

LBirch02 · 10/09/2021 11:52

knackeredcat I’d never even heard of Creative Zen! Grin

I got my iPod in 2004 and then around 2008/2009 I got a smartphone so stopped using my I pod gradually.

LBirch02 · 10/09/2021 11:55

safariboot those dates are what I seem to think as being the ‘Smartphone replacement’ era as well.

iPod Touch of course - that’s one j missed out!

Christ I am so out of date.

I have a huge iPod Classic. It holds metres and metres worth of CDs and even more meters of vinyl, that I haven't finished digitising yet.

My phone is for work, if I filled the memory with music I'd lose the first back up for work photos.

I'm not a luddite. I just like to keep work and leisure separate!

Bontanics · 10/09/2021 11:59

I don't know if people are still using them but there's certainly a market out there for the original retro tech. I sold a first Gen 1Pod Classic 160gb on ebay a last year on ebay for more than I paid for it brand new back in 2002. It had just been sat in drawer and I had no cable for it and didn't know if it was working and yet someone was still wanted to buy it.

Toddlerteaplease · 10/09/2021 12:02

I sold my iPod classic for £80 a few years ago. I was amazed!

KeflavikAirport · 10/09/2021 12:11

I use one for running. It still works fine so I see no need to stop using it.

LBirch02 · 10/09/2021 12:15

Wow some of these posts about selling iPods as retro tech have surprised me especially the prices you got for them!!

My kids had ipod touches as their first 'phones' from CEX so they could message etc but no SIM. They've just sold them back and got more for them than my husband did for an iphone 6 so they must have flipped over into 'retro':)

RustyBear · 10/09/2021 12:43

I kept an old iPhone which I use as an iPod - it has no SIM, and I have my music and audio books on it.
I was very glad I had it when we were without the internet for 7 weeks (waiting for Openreach to dig a hole!) so couldn't use streaming services unless I used expensive data.

GiantHaystacks2021 · 10/09/2021 12:47

I bought mine in 2007. I use it almost every day.

VoyageInTheDark · 10/09/2021 12:55

DH was using his until recently. I thought he was the only one!

LaetitiaASD · 10/09/2021 12:57

@DayDate

Initially the ipod or mp3 player was much better sound quality than a phone but now phones are just as good why would you want 2 devices?
Personally I am still using an 80 GB iPod classic from about 2004. I use an iPod because the user interface is nicer than on my phone, and I can use the iPod all day when I am out and about without reducing my phone battery at all. I can also do anything I want with my phone without risking interrupting my music listening.

Finally, I had a tip of a jack plug break off in the headphone socket of my phone so I actually can't use my phone for music with headphones anyway, and it would be a real waste of money to spend £500 on a new phone simply for music, when I have an iPod already that does the job better. The irony, of course, is that if I had remembered my iPod that day then it would probably be the iPod that was broken not my phone.

LaetitiaASD · 10/09/2021 12:59

And another thing - I actually bought two in about 2004... they'd still both be going strong today if it were not for the fact I accidentally left one of them in a puddle of water under a microwave for 3 months and it didn't cope with that very well.

thisplaceisweird · 10/09/2021 12:59

as soon as i got an iphone, so 2010

thisplaceisweird · 10/09/2021 13:00

I'm actually gobsmacked people still use them!
Anyone still use VHS? Jeessus

SpacePotato · 10/09/2021 13:05

My car is so old it has a cassette deck. Can still listen to the megamixes I made in my teens recording Dr Fox on the top 40 on sundays or early NOW! tapes Grin

Probably have a Sony Walkman somewhere too. Might see how much it will go for on ebay.......
