To ask when (or even if!!) people stopped using iPods?

OK I admit - I may/may not be in the minority here as I’ve never owned an iPod. At one staged you’d hear ‘MP3’ player being said a lot - now you don’t hear it.
So I missed all the different versions iPod Nano, Shuffle etc .
So what are your thought on this? Do some people still use them?

I have an iPod nano with my running playlist which I use for yes you have guessed it running! Would never consider taking my phone out for a run as it's too big.

beguilingeyes · 10/09/2021 13:10

Gawd I miss MP3 palyers. I had a few Creative Zens, from a teeny-tiny one to a 60gb version.

I would really love to get one now, but the bigger capacity ones seemed to have vanished. I don't think Creative even make them any more.

TrickorTreacle · 10/09/2021 13:11

@LBirch02

I also never experienced dial ups and modems as was an internet latecomer!!
You didn't miss much really. Dial-up internet was measured in kilobits, where broadband is in megabits.

Average dial-up was 50kb
Average broadband is 50mb

The difference is 1000:1 so as you can imagine, dial-up was painfully slow! It was all about AOL and Compuserve. Quite gimmicky and fun as it was new back in 1995, but wasn't that practical when it comes to day-to-day life.

Broadband internet is a lot more practical because you have online shopping, music/video streaming, video calls / MS Teams etc. The only thing I don't like is social media as everything seems to revolve around Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

I loved my iPod, unfortunately I accidentally washed it with my running gear and it is no more. RIP beloved iPod!

IjustbelieveinMe · 10/09/2021 13:13

@TrickorTreacle

The first iPod came out 20 years ago now!

Then somewhere down the line, Apple did a touchscreen version of the iPod, which would then eventually become the iPhone in the late 2000s. Then like others said here, sales started dropping off in the 2010s in favour of the iPhone.

I was too poor for Apple stuff, so my MP3 player was a Creative Zen.

Creative Zen sounded so much better than the iPod with great in ear buds. I still have my zen!
chatw0o0 · 10/09/2021 13:14

I still have my iPod touch from 2010 (was pre-smart phone days and I upgraded from another iPod, so I could 'get the internet' on it!). Yes I was a bit late to the game.

I use my iPhone now, but have all my CDs synced to iTunes, so still get them on my phone (I refuse to completely 'update'!!!).

BikeRunSki · 10/09/2021 13:18

I loved my iPod Nano, but I accidentally washed it and it died. By that time I could listen to music on my phone. I thought about trying to replace it (they were no longer made at this point) but also thought it would be wise to take a phone running anyway. But nanos were nice and tiny for running with.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 10/09/2021 13:19

I've still got a Nano with a gym playlist on it and DP uses my iPod Touch when he's touring so he doesn't have to risk his phone running out of battery.

I mostly use my phone and Fitbit these days, but it's a nice throwback to the last time I got fit and when I inevitably lose yet another bluetooth earbud down the back of the bed

SisterMonicaJoansHabit · 10/09/2021 13:19

I eventually just used my phone, it had google play, and I had eventually bought so many times on it.

Recently google play music went over to streaming only. Which I can't do if I'm not connected to wifi.

So I bought an iPod again and spent ages trying to move about my Google Play music over to iTunes. Hard when it's not my laptop and it's already attached to another iTunes account.

The whole thing has been a nightmare and I wish I'd never stopped using an iPod when I did.

But not everything I want to buy is on iTunes.

I get a bit precious about my music, it's something which was written about in my adult autism diagnosis. So you can probably guess what a bugger this has been.

My partner is a steadfast iPhone user and uses that. But then he's one of those who was able to afford that sort of thing, had the watch etc.

TheLadyGrayson · 10/09/2021 13:25

I always say how much I wish I owned a classic iPod, but I hated having to connect to my pc and use iTunes (always seemed to need updating for hours at a time) to update my nano and I presumed the iOS would eventually become unsupported. If they ever re-release one I’ll be all over it. They’re so iconic.

GiantHaystacks2021 · 10/09/2021 13:27

Forgot to say that mine is an Ipod Nano.

LaetitiaASD · 10/09/2021 13:28

@thisplaceisweird

I'm actually gobsmacked people still use them! Anyone still use VHS? Jeessus
No, but I swear this is true... about 5 years ago I decided to bin my old VHS player which was in the garage, and then went out in the evening and the mate I was meeting gave me a VHS cassette he thought I'd like! (and he was right, I did like it, even though I can't play it!)
BarbaraofSeville · 10/09/2021 13:30

I think for most people, smartphones have made them obsolete, or at least that a phone is a suitable 'all in one device' so you don't need a separate music player.

Just like sat navs, most people can manage with just their phone and don't need a separate in car device.

Doesn't have to be expensive or need charging everyday either. I have a Motorola that cost less than £100 and has a battery that lasts about 3 days. As well as a phone, all the apps, camera, it does me perfectly well for podcast listening and a sat nav.

Lovemusic33 · 10/09/2021 13:33

I use a iPod, I’m years behind, took me ages to get one and then people started just using there phones but I like using my iPod as there’s so much other stuff on my phone 🤣.

ohfook · 10/09/2021 13:35

I still use one. I didn't realise it was no longer a thing until a saw a meme basically saying remember when you used to convert a you tube vid to mp3 and then upload it to your iPod. That's exactly what I still do - I don't actually know what I should be doing instead Blush.

SnowyMouse · 10/09/2021 13:36

I still use my ipod, it has so many audiobooks they wouldn't fit on my iPhone.

bluetoothroboticgrapefruit · 10/09/2021 13:37

I do wish that apple would make 1 more shuffle that works with apple music (ie like mighty does for Spotify). I would probably buy it. I did contemplate moving to Spotify and buying a mighty but I'm already very integrated with both apple music and YouTube music (for different reasons and it's still less than I used to spend on music) and I can forsee me ending keeping all 3.

Katiepoes · 10/09/2021 13:37

I have a Nano in the car, it lives there and I love it. I don't want to connect my phone when in the car, and I have a built in navigation system so no need for it ever really. My daughter got an Ipod for her birthday some time ago as we weren't ready to get her a phone, she loved it too and now it lives in the kitchen for streaming music. Both still work perfectly so why stop using them?

MummyJ12 · 10/09/2021 13:40

Mine was a nano too, perfect for just clipping on and it was tiny, light with my running playlist on.
I use my iPhone now, it’s heavier and I need a running belt to carry it in (the Sweaty Betty one is good) at least I have Spotify, have sorted another running playlist and the phone is good for Strava too. But I still miss my little iPod nano.

hauntedvagina · 10/09/2021 14:25

I stopped using an iPod around the same time as I stopped buying CD's, probably 10 to 12 years ago. I've had a Spotify account for as long as I can remember and stream all my music through my phone or the TV.

As an aside, I recently tried explaining to a 9 year that Netflix used to be a DVD rental service. He just could not grasp it.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/09/2021 15:02

It took forever for me to get DM to understand how pausing live tv worked when that first came out @hauntedvagina.

She honestly couldn't get past the idea that the whole country wasn't waiting for her to finish her phone call or whatever so everyone could get back to Coronation Street.

Angel2702 · 10/09/2021 15:05

I do I don’t subscribe to a streaming service and do t have enough storage to store music on my phone. Mine is mostly used connected to the car.

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 10/09/2021 15:15

I only stopped using my beloved ipod Touch about 5 years ago and only because it was an old model that could not support the latest Apple update. I'm still fucked off about it, tbh. Perfectly good ipod that was rendered useless for no good reason!

I really liked having a separate device for music and also for podcasts. It meant I could download loads of stuff without clogging up my phone.

Peckhampalace · 10/09/2021 15:19

I had to stop using my iPod nano because it wouldn't connect to windows 10 on any Machine I tried.
Was sorry to see it go, but wireless headphones connected to phone are actually more comfortable for me.

SpacePotato · 10/09/2021 17:26

Crap. I haven't tried connecting mine for ages since we got rid of the windows 7 desktop.
Oh well. Guess it will stuck as it is then.
