I agree @Siameasy - that book is brilliant. Well written with really clear explanations.

VladmirsPoutine · 12/09/2021 12:10

I've just googled a Keto food list and my jaw is on the floor! You're seriously telling me that all those meats , fats and cheeses are fair game!!!??? So in essence just eat anything but carbs.

IamnotSethRogan · 12/09/2021 12:14

@VladmirsPoutine yup it sounds mad but it really works !

BIWI · 12/09/2021 17:00

Yes, @VladmirsPoutine!

Keto is a pretty extreme version of low carbing, as you have to keep your carbs under 20g a day, which precludes eating a lot of veg.

Personally I'm not very happy with that, and would far rather see a day's menu based around much more veg/salad than that. But still based around protein and fat rather than carbs.

VladmirsPoutine · 12/09/2021 17:18

I think I might give it a shot! It doesn't seem to be as miserable as about 99% of diets out there.

midgemagneto · 12/09/2021 19:38

Keto sounds like the new name for Atkins diet

Works because people consume fewer calories, your body doesn't want just meat snd fat

Really bad for people's general health though

As I said above, I monitored my “macros” on MFP when I did keto and I was consuming up to 4000 cals at times because it is a high fat diet. Keto works because it is “the fattening carbohydrate” and NOT dietary fat which causes the rise in blood sugar which causes insulin to be released which then pushes glucose into the cells causing fat storage causing overweight bodies. Dietary fat on its own, usually blamed for people being fat, doesn’t raise blood sugar or cause insulin to be produced at anywhere near the same levels. Keto is - in my experience - difficult to stick to though long term.
cherrybonbons · 12/09/2021 21:15

Mate. Way too few calories. Up your intake and you will see faster trusty's. 1500 cals on rest days. 1600 on workout days

Trusty's? 😆 results I meant! Follow some reliable insta people- Georgie gyms is great for this

Nomoreusernames1244 · 12/09/2021 21:19

Honestly o/p i was you 3 months ago.

Joined a gym, strength circuits 3x a week + cardio.

Lost nothing. Turns out I was overestimating calories and portion size. I must have been because I signed up to one of those meal services where you get 3 meals and a snack all calculated to 1200cals.

First week I lost 5lbs. After 8 weeks I’m down 20lbs. I haven’t been exercising as much either with kids at home over school holidays.

Honestly when I saw the scales hit 20lbs down i could have cried. I have tried so many diets over the years, and thought I has a good handle on calorie counting. Clearly I was just eating too much, even though my own calculations had me on about 1200 too.

cherrybonbons · 12/09/2021 21:20

FFS. Keto diets are bollocks. If your eating 4000 calories a day and losing weight, then you must be burning a shit load more.
Everything in moderation. Track your calories. Make sure you have enough protein and eat the bread if your calories allow. Jeeze the advice on here is NOT correct

Mercurial123 · 13/09/2021 05:29

Every other person on MN seems to be anti carbs.

This is an interesting read, Keto isn't the answer long term

Toodlydoo · 13/09/2021 05:41

When I did the 30 ds (erm 20 days of it) i didn’t lose a lb but lost inches, then when i stopped exercising I dropped 5lbs in a few days.

It’s most likely water retention in your muscles, bunch of stuff on the internet about it - look up DOMS

VladmirsPoutine · 13/09/2021 10:47

Curious question: As long as you remain in a calorie deficit does it matter what you eat? So for example can someone eat a cheese burger and fries at say 700 calories and therefore still be under their daily recommended intake therefore still lose weight?

This is true afaik but you'll be starving and feel like shit.
Siameasy · 13/09/2021 12:46

They aren’t bollocks. The books I mentioned above explain the significant role of the endocrine system as regards weight gain and once you understand the role of insulin in fat storage you won’t waste another second on yet another depressing calorie controlled diet that doesn’t work.
And as regards “oh you must’ve done loads of activity” I go to the gym three times a week that’s all. Excessive intense exercise isn’t good for you and can be counterproductive.
I agree that keto is hard to stick to so I have now found low carb and intermittent fasting to be the perfect combo for me.

Nomoreusernames1244 · 13/09/2021 12:59

I understand the role of insulin in fat storage. And glucose uptake into cells for energy. I understand kreb’s cycle, atp, and a lot more.

I never understand why in all this talk of insulin no one ever mentions gluconeogenesis and glucagon. Glucagon being insulin’s opposite and facilitates the mobilisation of stored energy.

There’s also new research on gut bacteria and why some people function better on low carb, others on higher carb.

I don’t think there’s any one solution. Low carb does not work for me. Low calorie does. So I will stick to a balanced diet eating less. If low carb works for anyone else then that’s what they should do.

Sometimes it feels like people get a bit evangelical over what works for them, and try and tell others it’s the only option. All this talk of cringing for people who don’t subscribe to the same diet theory is just ridiculous. You crack on and don’t worry about others.

Ive heard this about a thousand times and it messes up so many clients, who then give up as they don't get the fast results they think they're entitled to.

Do not look at scales more than once a fortnight, respect your body as the incredible machine it is, not just as a thing that weighs too much, or loses enough, and relax...but be CONSISTENT. Your body has years of being overweight to deal with, systems and hormones to recalibrate, you get temporarily more 'puffy' sometimes after working out (especially strength work & it's temporary and a good thing as it's a natural physiological reaction), there's so much your body has to readjust to, that in the first few weeks of a great new fitness regime you won't lose anything (some people lose a lot, some don't, but it all tends to even out in the end).

Your body doesn't know you're now looking after it so much better with great healthy food and exercise with the sole intention of fat loss - it's just enjoying itself getting healthier and stronger, shedding the inflammation and some levels of dysfunction you'll have had for years after holding on to too much weight, and so on and on. When it's ready the body fat will come off. Please trust the incredible machine you're living in!

I mean that all in a positive and helpful way (hope none of it sounds negative, it's just sometimes a little bluntness at this stage can help!).

Most importantly just do not give up. Keep going, and over time you'll get amazing results.

lockdownalli · 13/09/2021 13:07

I am mid fifties and 1200 calories a day is only 100 calories below my maintenance calories (lifetime of yoyo dieting possibly to blame for that)

Persevere. If you are exercising more often and eating more healthily, that has to be better for your body. Maybe concentrate on that for now and think about longer term goals?

Polkadots2021 · 13/09/2021 13:08

All the keto comments btw, I'm all for what works for individual people. For some keto is great simply because they gel with it.

But for everyone else keto is a really hard way of losing weight and can be dangerous long term especially when it comes to certain organ health and the risk of atherosclerosis. Carbs, when it comes down to it, are wonderful healthy things just like everything else when eaten in moderation. I've been at this before Atkins was even popular (a VERY long time ago, almost legwarmer era!!) and this same conversation comes and goes albeit with a different name now and then every few years.

MsTSwift · 13/09/2021 13:36

Sounds mad but I use a smaller plate. I eat dinner off a breakfast plate to keep my portion size down. I eat normally (healthy but not insanely so) just less of it.

mumda · 13/09/2021 14:04

Not enough calories. Your body thinks it's starving. Starving bodies store food not burn it.
1500 a day.
And are you spreading out the gym days?

DillonPanthersTexas · 13/09/2021 14:24

Exercise will not lose you weight, it will make you gain weight as you gain muscle.

Must be why all those elite distance runners look like Arnold Schwarzenegger.
