Can you pay for a trainer some are online to get you started. Do a tdee calculator 1200 is very low for height and activity. I’m 5 ft 8 moderately active and need around 1700 to lose.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 11/09/2021 07:00

Are you drinking alcohol OP?

BrisbaneandGone · 11/09/2021 07:01

@a8mint

taken from a medical website so you don't agree with what they are "blathering" about. Someone who lifts weights will look very different from someone with the same height and body weight than someone who doesn't lift weights. Exactly because MUSCLE WEIGHS MORE THAN FAT
No it doesn't, a pound of muscle weighs exactly the same as a pound of fat...a pound. Visually there'll be more muscle in a pound of muscle than fat in a pound of fat, but they both weigh the same. Imagine a pound of marshmallows, there'll be loads of them, now imagine a pound of chicken breasts and there won't be very much at all. Both still weigh a pound though
Mercurial123 · 11/09/2021 09:19

Exactly because MUSCLE WEIGHS MORE THAN FAT

Can you prove that from a reliable source?Otherwise you are just "blathering on". And stop shouting it's rude.

midgemagneto · 11/09/2021 09:30

Muscle weighs more than fat? Muscle is denser.

Actually means 2 people of the same weight then the one with more muscles will look smaller

Hormones and water retention would be my guess

Thebig3 · 11/09/2021 10:08

Oh my god the misinformation on this thread is absolutely shocking and shows exactly why there is an obesity crisis in the country with all the crap people are spouting on here!

OP you need to speak to a personal trainer who can advise you properly, someone who is trained in this kind of thing. I would also recommend looking at the likes of the fitness chef, James Smith Pt and similar on Instagram. Do not do keto and crap like that there is no need, carbs are not the enemy!

I love the fitness chef! Totally agree with what you've said.
Siameasy · 11/09/2021 10:29

How old are you? I ask this because when you hit peri menopause things change. I do intermittent fasting and try to eat low carb and I’ve been watching Dr Mindy Pelz on YouTube. She talks a lot about understanding hormones’ role in being overweight - not just the sex hormones I mean cortisol and, especially, insulin which is fat-building hormone
I find exercise DEFINITELY helps with mood, body composition and of course fitness. Weight loss, not so much.

Siameasy · 11/09/2021 12:50

I would also say - what are we doing differently nowadays compared to the past when overweight was less of a problem? Because going to the gym was uncommon until the mid-90s yet people were slimmer.
I would say a big current problem is a snacking culture. Intermittent fasting massively impedes snacking which is why I love it.

VladmirsPoutine · 11/09/2021 14:36

I'd say give it more time, 3 weeks is just getting going really.

WreckTangled · 11/09/2021 14:45

This. You can do keto, intermittent fasting, slimming world (please don't), low fat, whatever you want. But at the end of the day it's all about creating a calorie deficit, it's just about finding what works for you. If you're not losing body fat then you're not in a calorie deficit. Agree that three weeks isn't long enough to really tell though. Take measurements and photos and think about how you feel rather than the scale weight (which is a really good tool for seeing a tend over time).

It’s very difficult to lose weight at the same time as following an exercise program.

Far better to grit yiur teeth and really cut your calories to a minimum for say, 6 months, then exercise like crazy to maintain.

So many people fail to understand that the reason they hate exercise is that they always combine it with restricting calories. This makes any workout so much harder and not at all enjoyable.

You only need to maintain a calorie deficit for a short period of time, just knuckle down and push through it. It’s the secret to maintaining your weight in the long run.

I am shorter and lighter than you, but can consume 2000 calories per day, enjoy my workouts and stay the same size.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 11/09/2021 15:51

I would add lots of walking. 15k steps a day.

WreckTangled · 11/09/2021 16:07

It's actually very important to exercise (specifically resistance training) whilst dieting to avoid losing lean body mass (muscle) which in turn can hinder your weight loss and make it harder to maintain.

Not working for the OP though, is it?

Far more important to ensure your workouts are well-fuelled, it’s the only way to get the endorphin hit and fall in love with exercise.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 11/09/2021 16:16

OP needs to give it more time. Keep going!

PMSL!

A pound of muscle weighs a pound
A pound of fat weighs a pound
They weigh the same - i.e. one pound!

However ...

A pound of muscle is much denser than a pound of fat, so if you gain muscle and lose fat you will look leaner - even if you actually weigh the same.

BIWI · 11/09/2021 16:29

@WreckTangled

'If you want to lose stored fat, the only way to do this is to eat a diet designed to keep insulin low.'

Rubbish. Insulin converts food to energy for your body to lose. It all comes down to a calorie deficit. You also need/produce insulin for protein, albeit at a slower rate.

@WreckTangled

This is simply not true. Insulin has nothing to do with protein. Insulin's function is to deal with glucose levels in the blood. Therefore it's about fat regulation.

See here if you don't believe me!

WreckTangled · 11/09/2021 16:45

BIWI I need to inject insulin for protein or my blood sugar levels spike, as do most diabetics on a low carb diet.

see heree*

LBirch02 · 11/09/2021 16:49

YANBU. I get so impatient about weight loss - I need it all off by yesterday. But to get a quick loss I need to drop a fair bit below 1200/day

BIWI · 11/09/2021 17:13

@WreckTangled - are you a Type 1 diabetic?

WreckTangled · 11/09/2021 17:34

Yes so I understand that it's different but it seems there's still an insulin response to protein in non diabetics, albeit smaller.

WreckTangled · 11/09/2021 17:39

Sorry should have put type one in that previous post. Type two not on insulin obviously wouldn't need to inject anything Grin

Siameasy · 11/09/2021 18:16

To understand the significant role played by insulin re: weight gain, I recommend reading Why We Get Fat and/or The Obesity Code

If you do hardcore keto (and especially carnivore) you can lose weight and be in a calorie surplus which completely flies in the face of all “the rules”. I tracked everything on MFP because I did keto for my wedding and became pretty thin. It’s a high fat diet - I was eating up to 4K cals a day BUT very very low carb.
