And live 40 minutes away from the job, would you drive or take the train?
Job is at a London hospital

@Eralos

I’d drive. I drive to work from zone 2 London to zone 4 London. It’s fine.
But you're going against most of the traffic surely? Most people go from 4 to 2 or 1 . (I go from 3 to 2).

OP. I have an electric bike that I use for work, in the late spring/summer/ early autumn anyway, don't like it in the cold and wet and not confident in the dark.) It's 7 miles and takes 45 mins and I love it.

MsHedgehog · 08/09/2021 22:04

@Eralos you’re driving away from central London. That’s a very different commute to driving into Zone 1.

longue · 08/09/2021 22:08

DH drove from z2/3 into the city today. Took him 50 mins

Rhinothunder · 08/09/2021 22:13

Public transport all the way

Rhinothunder · 08/09/2021 22:14

Ps congratulations on the job!

underneaththeash · 08/09/2021 22:16

I reckon it would take an hour abs parking would be astronomical!

Doubledoorsontogarden · 08/09/2021 22:21

Train

EatSprayGlove · 08/09/2021 22:21

I would get public transport. I did drive an 8 mile London commute for a couple of years when the tube involved 3 changes but there was free parking. I hated that drive, minimum 40 mins and if I dared leave at rush hour much much worse despite the fact I was in theory doing the opposite flow!

namechange7865 · 08/09/2021 22:27

Obviously I don't want to give my exact location. By car it shows on Google that it takes 40 minutes from my house.

Have you adjusted the time to see how long it takes in rush hour?

Spidey66 · 08/09/2021 22:29

@longue

I live and work in London and I don’t know anyone who drives to work

It's quite common for those who work in hospitals or schools or police. Many companies have car parks.

I reckon the vast majority of hospital staff do not work shifts.....and even if they do public transport would quite easily get staff in for 7am or after 9.30pm ie early starts and late finishes. Sundays might be tricky, but there's night tubes and buses.
longue · 08/09/2021 22:33

@Spidey66 i'm not claiming public transport doesn't exist

Spidey66 · 08/09/2021 22:40

I know....but I think many london hospital staff can and do get to work by public transport, even if theyre shift workers.

flumpo · 08/09/2021 22:42

I would always, always take the train. Driving in London is not fun.

LadyGAgain · 08/09/2021 22:44

Parking at ChelWest is challenging plus the charges on top of parking (congestion etc). I'd take the train any day.

longue · 08/09/2021 22:45

@Spidey66 yes but many also drive hence the news articles about the outrageous prices.

ArcheryAnnie · 08/09/2021 22:48

Train always.

Iwouldlikesomecake · 08/09/2021 22:52

Train train train. I had to drive in for years (community midwife) and the 35min journey used to take me 1hr 45 in rush hour. I now do the commute by train and sit and veg and don’t have to think about anything.

PurpleFlower1983 · 08/09/2021 22:52

Train.

Fifthtimelucky · 08/09/2021 22:59

I worked in London for 35 years and for about half of that period I also lived in London. I never drove. Indeed for most of the time I lived in London I didn't have a car.

TartanJumper · 08/09/2021 23:10

Train. Driving in London is a huge PITA and you might struggle to park. =
Although does depend on shift times, the specific hospital parking situation etc.

Jangle33 · 08/09/2021 23:23

Train…. Working in hospital I would hope you would be more than aware of not contributing to air pollution for starters!!

Duchess379 · 08/09/2021 23:25

@LondonIsCalling

Peak hours morning and evening. Chelsea and Westminster
Train & tube. I hated driving into Fulham when I lived in Surrey, traffic is always bad. Do you have parking at the hospital?
Tangledtresses · 08/09/2021 23:25

Absolutely public transport! Lived in Fulham for 40 years the traffic is hell especially on Fulham Road!

Tangledtresses · 08/09/2021 23:27

It would take 40 minutes from Shepherd's Bush on a good day 😂

EspressoDoubleShot · 08/09/2021 23:28

I’ve worked in various London hospitals as a locum and FT , for C&W I’d get the train. It’s a great area btw
