And live 40 minutes away from the job, would you drive or take the train?
Job is at a London hospital

Why is this in AIBU? What is your question - what do you think might be reasonable/unreasonable?

The answer to your question depends entirely on whether or not parking is available/provided!

30daysandcounting · 08/09/2021 20:55

We need to know where you'd be travelling in from OP but unless you have free parking at C&W I can't imagine you'd want to drive...

plominoagain · 08/09/2021 20:55

Train definitely . No parking anywhere near CAWH that isn't 80p for 12 minutes and traffic near Fulham road is usually absolutely dreadful. I really wouldn't drive at all

traumatisednoodle · 08/09/2021 20:55

Where are you coming from ? From the West it's a lovely bike along thd river.

Etinox · 08/09/2021 20:56

C&W is the only one I drive to. Kings, Guys, St Thomas’ are near transport hubs and bus routes. C&W isn’t and has good parking, too expensive if you’d have to pay full rates. If it’s free for you and you’re coming from north south or west driving could be feasible.

elastamum · 08/09/2021 20:56

Definitely use public transport. I drove into cental London yesterday to help my DC move. It cost £27 in charges and £30 to park. And I queued all the way out in the evening.

namechange7865 · 08/09/2021 20:57

What's the time door to door (realistically) train vs car, I doubt they're the same? And what's the cost difference including parking, congestion charge (if applicable) car maintenance etc?

I highly suspect train will win.

jamsandwich1 · 08/09/2021 20:58

Train 100%. The traffic can be horrendous. I stupidly drove a 4 mile journey this afternoon as I didn’t feel like wrestling a double buggy on the tube but it took 1hr 10 mins and that was not at rush hour.

CorianderBee · 08/09/2021 20:58

Train! I live in London and a 45 min tube ride for me would be around 2 hours by car.

CorianderBee · 08/09/2021 20:58

Also don't forget the congestion charges!

Puffykins · 08/09/2021 20:59

Also worth knowing is that the traffic in that area - the Kings Road, the Fulham Road and Earls Court Road etc. Often get completely blocked. It's irritatingly further away from a tube station than would be ideal but it's quite a nice walk from Earls Court to the hospital - about 15 minutes. Fulham Broadway might be quicker.

Westfacing · 08/09/2021 21:00

I live near C&W - 40 minutes by what, foot, train, car, and from where?

MurielSpriggs · 08/09/2021 21:01

I'd do whichever would be quickest.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 08/09/2021 21:01

I’d never drive! I won’t even get a taxi most of the time because it’s quicker to take public transport cus if the traffic! I even travelled with all my luggage and my baby and the Pram on the tube at rush hour from Euston rather than take a taxi recently on return back from a holiday because I knew we would sit in traffic and the journey would take way longer 😂

MimosaFields · 08/09/2021 21:02

Unless you live 2 miles away, there's no way you are going to drive to C&W in 40 minutes. Where did you get that calculation from?

Fupoffyagrasshole · 08/09/2021 21:05

Oh just really read post what do you mean Live 40mins from the job?

40mins by car or public transport? Walking??

lboogy · 08/09/2021 21:08

You'll never find free parking at Chelsea and Westminster! And if you do it'll cost you at least £10 a day if not more. Definitely train

LakeShoreD · 08/09/2021 21:08

Yeah OP I think you’re going to need to clarify where you actually live for anyone to be able to give any sort of answer. However, main points are- traffic is horrendous, parking is expensive unless you’d get it for free and there isn’t actually a station nearby. Bus could be an option but again no idea if that’s viable given you haven’t actually said where you’ll be coming from.

Cupoftea53 · 08/09/2021 21:11

I wouldn’t dream of driving there. The traffic is diabolical and totally unknown and I would imagine working in a hospital you can’t turn up to work late!

weasle · 08/09/2021 21:12

I highly recommend cycling as best way to get around London.
If not cycling then train / tube.
I wouldn't consider for a moment driving.
Too expensive/ slow/ frustrating/ tedious/ sedentary/climate ruining.

LondonIsCalling · 08/09/2021 21:13

Obviously I don't want to give my exact location.

By car it shows on Google that it takes 40 minutes from my house.
I will work the standard hours 9-5.

If public transport is busy or slow you have loads of different options. If traffic is awful you’re just stuck in it with no options at all. Sometimes traffic and transport are so bad in London you need to bail and just walk for a bit, you can’t do that with a car. Plus you can go for after work drinks or dinner if you don’t drive.

Cupoftea53 · 08/09/2021 21:15

i live 4 miles from c&w. If I was going there I would allow an hour for the journey to be on the safe side, not the 17 mins it supposedly takes!

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 08/09/2021 21:16

First question is where do you park? Would you be allocated a space in the hospital underground car park?

There’s no congestion charge for C&W but it will be within the expanded ULEZ from October, so you need the right sort of car to avoid that charge.

I live perhaps 3 or 4 miles from the hospital and that takes me 40 minutes in rush hour traffic so it does depend what you mean by living 40 minutes away.

Summerfun54321 · 08/09/2021 21:16

By car it shows on Google that it takes 40 minutes from my house.

40 mins at peak times?
