To think Boris Johnson should have to answer questions about the £350 million

Poetrypatty · 07/09/2021 17:15

Basically he lied in order to get Brexit, saying we'd have £350 million A WEEK from Brexit for the NHS Angry When we are all getting tax rises instead.
Why is he just being allowed to get away with this lie, without even having to make an apology.

And yet, and yet, your secret weapon to getting Boris Johnson out of power is what...um...let's think...🤔 Oh yes, that's right. The blinking 350m bus.

I've literally posted on Mumsnet. I'm not deluded enough to think this is me getting Boris Johnson out of power or that I have a secret weapon Grin Grin

I do think people who are in public office who lie should be held to account and I do happen to think a lot of people actually do care about being lied to. I think also that a lot of people voted Johnson because Jeremy Corbyn was as useless as a blancmange.

a flipping red, double decker bus.

As shown above, it was a single-decker luxury coach.

@Porridgealert

So you know not only what I think but also what everyone else thinks Let me have a stab in the dark at what you think. You don't want Boris Johnson to be PM and you don't want The Conservatives to be in govt and you think that going on about the bus will weaken their grasp on power.

But you don't seem to be able to grasp that this happened in 2016. Five years ago. It was all over the media: print, online, TV, radio, SM, that it wasn't true. And that was before the referendum. And Johnson still won the referendum. And let's be honest, it was Johnson who won it. It was then all over the media again that it wasn't true. It was looked at by different bodies who did nothing about it. He was taken to court and the judge quashed it. The Speaker of the HoC was rabidly anti Johnson. He didn't do anything. The electorate voted. Twice. Second time they elected Johnson. They knew about the bus. They knew about the lie. Everybody knows that Boris Johnson lies. But despite the bus, despite the lies, despite everything, he was elected prime minister.
And yet, and yet, your secret weapon to getting Boris Johnson out of power is what...um...let's think...🤔 Oh yes, that's right. The blinking 350m bus.
It has no traction. If you want him out, you're going to have to look for a better hook or tagline than a flipping red, double decker bus.

What’s your suggestion Porridge?
Changes17 · 08/09/2021 14:32

He tells people what they want to believe. So they do.
I mean, it's very tempting isn't it, to believe that this extra tax will sort out social care once and for all. It won't though - most of it will go into the NHS.

Porridgealert · 08/09/2021 14:33

@Jaysmith71
But my description is so much more evocative and fits in better with the rhythm. Never let the truth get in the way of a good story. 😉

That's a lie!

Iggly · 08/09/2021 14:36

Lies should be called out over and over again.

The fundamental issue is that the Brexit referendum was poorly run. Absolutely awful. But the media didn’t cover this. So we must continue to shout about it

Iggly · 08/09/2021 14:38

People made that judgement based on the skewed media

And yet actually that’s because they saw him as a threat. Look how well he did against Theresa May….. then the media went all out.

All my pro Brexit "friends" have conveniently forgotten £350,000,000. Someone should explain ?Farage AngryAngry

"I do think people who are in public office who lie should be held to account and I do happen to think a lot of people actually do care about being lied to."
I agree. I already called a comment that people enjoyed being lied to ridiculous. But the accounting process has been done and the electorate judged how injurious the lie was and decided they weren't that bothered.

I think also that a lot of people voted Johnson because Jeremy Corbyn was as useless as a blancmange.
Again, I agree.

I don’t agree with this either - people did know. People were livid that they were telling lies, nobody actually thought that money was going to the NHS. Why would it? The Tories have made no secret of treating the NHS as a drain.

The fundamental issue was: people wanted change. And it was easier to believe the apologetic posh liar over the robotic posh liar. Somebody said at the time, all politicians lie. So you need to decide which liar to vote for, and people chose the funny one.

Poetrypatty · 08/09/2021 14:43

Jeremy Corbyn was useless in my eyes. A terrible public speaker, didn't oppose Brexit, far too left wing. People just want normal centrist leaders not some kind of lefty revolution. He had zero charisma and didn't seem to me like someone you could put your faith in. Just not a natural leader.

I would prefer Keir Starmer as PM, he's a bit boring but seems trustworthy and sensible and that is what I want.

😂😂😂😂 This is either sarcasm or you've been living under a rock. This could not have been covered more.

Wheresmybiscuit3 · 08/09/2021 14:48

I don’t particularly think KS is very good either. Certainly not the best Labour have to offer

Brexit Motto for sure.

beguilingeyes · 08/09/2021 14:50

Saying that they're all the same, and all politicians lie just isn't good enough.
Why is it ok to lie in Parliament, but to get thrown out when pointing out the lie?
There should be standards. Ministers used to resign over disastrous mistakes, now, even if they get the sack they come back in a few months and it's all forgotten.
Priti Patel had to resign over her dodgy dealings with Israel and yet here she is, Home Secretary.
They're unaccountable.

TartanJumper · 08/09/2021 14:53

Boris must be thanking his lucky stars or whatever God he believes in for Covid. It masked and distracted us from the absolute shit show of his government perfectly.

Because they didn't ever believe it. There was other stuff that EU money was going to have to cover. And all the media, if they had believed it, was telling them it was a lie. Brexiteers just wanted to leave so it was immaterial whether it was a lie or the truth.
DdraigGoch · 08/09/2021 14:56

Even before the pandemic hit, the NHS saw its budget increased by £230m/week. Obviously I'm not privy to the figures which will be published in the autumn but I can bet that the £350m/week target you're banging on about has more than been exceeded.

This NI hike is for the black hole which is social care.

Personally I think Boris wanted to be king of the world and shag women. I don't for one minute think he's happy about covid. In fact I would think he thinks its been jolly inconvenient.
QuentinBunbury · 08/09/2021 15:00

Where is Farage these days?
And as for the "you lost, get over it" - Personally IDGAF about the referendum any more but I do care that we seem to have set a precedent that it's to be expected that all the politicians lie and so you can't vote based on what they say they will do. I don't see how you can have a functioning democracy as its basically means people can only vote based on who they like the most.
It's also a fundamental stepping stone to dictatorship/fascism as people stop paying attention to what those in power are doing.

It's not - most of it will be going to the NHS - this was on the news yesterday.

Where is Farage these days?

On GB News morning, noon and night.

Unlike the mysterious disappearing Andrew Neil, still nowhere to be seen.
