To think Boris Johnson should have to answer questions about the £350 million

Basically he lied in order to get Brexit, saying we'd have £350 million A WEEK from Brexit for the NHS Angry When we are all getting tax rises instead.
Why is he just being allowed to get away with this lie, without even having to make an apology.

Soo why can’t they just scrap HS2? That’s going to end up costing more than £100 billion. We have money for that though??? Makes no sense.

Wheresmybiscuit3 · 08/09/2021 12:44

I think BJ has a lot to answer for… but I doubt we will be getting any answers because he wouldn’t know the truth if it slapped him upside the head

WeAllHaveWings · 08/09/2021 12:51

Boris Johnson was not PM at the time he made those statements, they were not promises made by Boris alone, he was simply the comical prominent figure pictured in front of the bus in the Vote Leave campaign.

The Vote Leave campaign had in it many MPs and also had Labour MPs in it too. They should all be held to account for the lies they told.

Scrapping HS2 now would cost almost as much as finishing it. Most of the contracts have been signed, procurement started years ago, materials for tunnels, rails, ecological relocation, rolling stock, land purchases etc.

The crazy thing about HS2 seems to be that the Japanese could have built the entire thing in a tunnel, all the way from London to the north, cheaper than we can build it on top of the ground.

CorrBlimeyGG · 08/09/2021 13:13

It's the 'hes's doing his best' narrative that makes me crazy.

"You can't expect them to focus on more than one thing at once" is one I've heard recently. Some people have amazingly poor standards.

GetOffThatPhone · 08/09/2021 13:18

The Great British Public love being lied to. Its all just a bit of fun.

Poetrypatty · 08/09/2021 13:33

Oh for gods sake, get over it. It was 5 years ago. There have been two general elections since then and Johnson has been in court over it. It is done. Can't you find, out of everything else that is going wrong, something more recent to whinge on about?

How about the something more recent being the rise in income tax, breaking a manifesto pledge to those who voted Tory, to pay for something which people might have thought they were getting already by voting for Brexit.

Asking someone in public office to be held accountable for their lies is not 'whingeing on' it's a legitimate cause for complaint.

It wasn't actuyhik that said it, I think it was farage?

Johnson took great care not to utter those exact words, but was happy to let himself be pictured in front of slogans that gave the impression that Brexit would mean that he would be giving £350m a week to the NHS ...

I don't believe that Boris Johnson ever thought that Leave would win the referendum.
He jumped on the Leave bandwagon in order to court popularity. He wanted to be seen as "a man of the people". He expected Leave to lose and his popularity to increase.
He wanted to be PM - and appearing to support Brexit was all part of his plan. The fact that Brexit won, I don't believe was part of the plan at all!

No, it's not. Because it was 5 years ago. It's been to court and thrown out. Parliament looked at it. The electorate voted on it. Twice. They even voted Johnson in as PM and they knew all about the complaints and that it wasn't true. They didn't care.

But you keep droning on about it. You think the vast majority of people listen to you and think "oh what an original and new point Patty is making. I knew nothing about that. Indeed I must not vote for Boris again." No, they're thinking what I'm thinking, "Get over it. Remain lost (it pains me to say). Move on."

Ipanemama · 08/09/2021 13:49

BoJo backed Brexit because he thought it would be better for HIS career. He gave vote leave credibility. A bit of Googling in 2016 would have told anyone that the £350 million a week was a lie.

This is a ridiculous remark...unless you can prove it?

I agree with what @Porridgealert said

Porridgealert · 08/09/2021 13:52

They didn't need to Google it. The BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Sky all said it was a lie. Maybe they couched it nicer. 🤔

Poetrypatty · 08/09/2021 13:53

Have a credible alternative and people will vote for them. The reason the Tories control Westminster, the reason the Democrats are running America, the reason the SNP have run Scotland for so long is that the alternatives are just as bad.

It's also quite laughable that anyone thinks it a surprise that politicians have lied or broken their promises! Politicians have always been dishonest (look at that utter cunt Kleon in ancient Athens for example). The only difference now is that what people say is recorded and it's easier to spot the lies.

By the result of the general elections it seems that that user is more in touch with what the general public think than you are.
AveryGoodlay · 08/09/2021 14:00

In reality the increased funding a nonce for the NHS is 6bn pa, That would not be a good campaign! Fund a nonce for the NHS 😂

Yes politicians have always lied. But this one was quite a whopper! And lead to the biggest political shake up in decades.

Stellaris22 · 08/09/2021 14:03

People don't care, they knew it was a lie at the time and still voted for him.

Anyone who voted Tory and slandered Corbyn has no right to get angry about this. We had a choice, the media vilified the alternative. Any media that gets angry and loud about this needs to remember the slander and lies they printed about Corbyn.

Basically, stop complaining, people voted for this and knew what voting for Johnson would entail.

BorisWhoHackedAtYourMop · 08/09/2021 14:03

👏🏽 My vote is for @Poetrypatty.

EerieSilence · 08/09/2021 14:13

@Stellaris22 - the problem with Corbyn and your arguments is that he wanted the same - Brexit, in his delusional hope that there's going to be some kind of a socialist revolution after the Brexit which the EU was preventing. Corbyn is a part of the new left, which, instead of principles of social democracy hails all the principles of the national socialism and is closer to the far right. Also, he's not a politician, he's not even a good populist, he's just a twat who had to have his own popularity created and carefully managed by people around him as he couldn't string a sentence without people starting to fall asleep.

Jaysmith71 · 08/09/2021 14:15

It WAS "Vote Leave," the 'official Leave Campaign run by Cummings, not "Leave.EU," the outlier, or should that be out-liar, campaign of Farage, who said Turkey would be joining the EU and 80 million Turks would be heading for the UK.

Porridgealert · 08/09/2021 14:23

So you know not only what I think but also what everyone else thinks
Let me have a stab in the dark at what you think. You don't want Boris Johnson to be PM and you don't want The Conservatives to be in govt and you think that going on about the bus will weaken their grasp on power.

But you don't seem to be able to grasp that this happened in 2016. Five years ago. It was all over the media: print, online, TV, radio, SM, that it wasn't true. And that was before the referendum. And Johnson still won the referendum. And let's be honest, it was Johnson who won it. It was then all over the media again that it wasn't true. It was looked at by different bodies who did nothing about it. He was taken to court and the judge quashed it. The Speaker of the HoC was rabidly anti Johnson. He didn't do anything. The electorate voted. Twice. Second time they elected Johnson. They knew about the bus. They knew about the lie. Everybody knows that Boris Johnson lies. But despite the bus, despite the lies, despite everything, he was elected prime minister.
And yet, and yet, your secret weapon to getting Boris Johnson out of power is what...um...let's think...🤔 Oh yes, that's right. The blinking 350m bus.
It has no traction. If you want him out, you're going to have to look for a better hook or tagline than a flipping red, double decker bus.
