Inspired/copied/due to lack of my own ideas

What phrases/come backs/irritating things do people say on MN?

OP posts:
MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 07/09/2021 13:49

@ChrissyPlummer

“Can you pick up some shifts at a pub?” “Can you increase your hours?” “Can you get a better paid job?” If only life were so simple 🙄🙄
You missed out 'take in some ironing' 😉
Menofsteel · 07/09/2021 13:52

“Brought a house”…. From where you clown? Annoys me every time.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 07/09/2021 13:53

Yes, take in some ironing is hilarious advice.

I don't even do my own ironing, I'm not even 100% sure where my iron is 🤣

Ironing businesses need insurance and to resister with the tax man etc, plus they need to have a decent iron, ironing board, space and time. Then they need to find bloody customers in the first place.

There aren't people just wandering about the streets with bags of wrinkly clothes hoping some poor person will want to take some ironing today.

VainAbigail · 07/09/2021 13:53

“Suck it up” 🤮

Also, people who refer to their kids as LO. And then go out of their way to hide if their kid is male or female. No one really cares and it’s not at all outing what sex they are.

Fiancé is another one, which whilst a completely normal word, when reading the word 1000 times in a very long winded post sounds so twee and sickly.

And anyone who uses the word “incandescent” to describe their rage, or their own rage on behalf of the OP. I think 9 times out of 10, people only use that word as they’ve picked it up off MN.

I’m sure there’s more….

This is a good one!!

People who feel it's their job to tear a poster apart for a small grammatical error, a few months back an OP posted asking for help as she was in a bad relationship and couldn't see a way out, consequently the very first rep!y to her OP was someone criticising her grammar, wonderful helpful reply kicking someone when they're already down.

Load3 · 07/09/2021 13:54

I really hate the D abbreviations.

"DH is a massive twat" so drop the "dear" then.

Start reading a thread only to realise after half a dozen responses they are talking about the "dear dog" not the "dear daughter".

DF - dear father, dear friend, dear fiance...

mim321 · 07/09/2021 13:54

Naice
Boils my piss
Rip you a new one (had to google that one to check I hadn't misunderstand. Which I hadn't)
Give your head a wobble
Stealth boast (often when useful context/background is being provided)
@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor

Although I do kind of get it, five meals (for a family) is obviously a huge exaggeration, but I have also seen friends who will cut the breast, legs and wings off a chicken and throw everything else away, usually having missed half the breast meat when cutting and probably less than half the meat overall.
Oh I see what you're saying, but you're coming at it from a different angle and we're getting lost in translationSmile

Yeah, shocking waste to throw that much away!

Peanutsandchilli · 07/09/2021 13:59

Any version of DH, DS, DD, DSC, Ddog, ExDh, Stbex etc etc.... it's not difficult to write out the damn word and would make a lot of posts so much easier to understand.

Not unique to mumsnet but "girly" anything. Night out. Shopping trip. Holiday

poullou · 07/09/2021 14:17

"I'll bite" is the worst. As if the poster is some fearless (keyboard) warrior and nobody else on MN has the bottle to respond to the OP.

Extra cringe points when it is on pg 4 of the thread ... after multiple other posters have replied to the OP.

Justme10 · 07/09/2021 14:18

Grim- it's overused and hardly ever used properly Angry

DrSbaitso · 07/09/2021 14:21

I hate "had our ups and downs". It always refers to an absolute car crash of a relationship.

Don't much like "wind your neck in" or "boils my piss".

DrSbaitso · 07/09/2021 14:21

I don't think it's meant that way. I think it's meant as an acknowledgement that the OP is on the wind up, so the poster loses less face for being provoked into responding.

@ClumpingBambooIsALie

"Crack on" spread like a rash on the Covid threads and doesn't seem to be going away. Drives me nuts.
also

'letting it rip' as if adding more drama by using an inappropriate, emotive word rather than just the correct 'spreading'

'You do you' I never really understood that one since on a discussion thread people will have differing opinions so naturally have different choices. It sounds lazy when nothing more constructive to say.

People that assuming their opinion is right when none are they are just opinions so usually write long, long, long posts arghhhhh just go away

I'd forgotten that one as well.

DrSbaitso · 07/09/2021 14:24

"Each to their own", always tacked on to an incredibly judgemental and superior post that couldn't make it clearer that this is absolutely not what the poster thinks.

DrSbaitso · 07/09/2021 14:25

"Grim" was very fashionable in the 90s.

Namechangedforthreadbackafter · 07/09/2021 14:25

That's funny, I love it.

Remember when people used to be proud of saying they used 'benign neglect' as their parenting policy.

Just awful. Someone said it in real life too. She was a shit Mum. Really disengaged from anything her DC did.

Namechangedforthreadbackafter · 07/09/2021 14:27

@notacooldad

I agree with this. Some posters write long and thoughtful posts and get no recognition. Others write 5 words and are really blunt and get fawned over how amazing and insightful they are. It's weird.

I am the queen of being ignored!! There's so many times I've said something and it's not been acknowledged and someone else says the same thing and everyone agrees with them!!
Dont worry there's no need to acknowledge this post, I'm used to being ignored!🤣🤣🤣🤣

I hear you.

Although, I actually don't like that phrase and haven't used it before. Oops I am succumbing to some now!

OP posts:
Snoken · 07/09/2021 14:28

Cheeky annoys me. A cheeky G&T, a cheeky slice of cake, a cheeky nip to the shops. It's nothing cheeky about any of those things, it's just life. Regular bloody life.

HailAdrian

Not a phrase but the fangirling on some threads makes me cringe!

I agree, it makes me cringe as well. I was on a thread the other day and the fangirling was pathetic and anyone who disagreed with the OP was ridiculed"

Some threads and posters are best avoided. The fangirling makes them sound about 15. Avoid at all costs.
