Inspired/copied/due to lack of my own ideas

What phrases/come backs/irritating things do people say on MN?

OP posts:
Abitofalark · 08/09/2021 23:38

S&B. Who knows what that is? Stack and Bonner is all that comes to mind.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 08/09/2021 23:44

@HomeSliceKnowsBest

And 'a red lip', 'a smart trouser' usually found on S&B.
Don't forget 'a curated ear.'
BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 08/09/2021 23:51

When parents 'offer' foods to toddlers. As in:

That's a lot of sugar OP. I would also offer some spelt crackers or perhaps a handful of grains.

Always makes me picture a Little Lord Fauntleroy and a parent begging and scraping to get them to eat it. Put half decent food on plates and be done with it!

Thank you, VanGo.

I too get very irritated by the endless use of 'ref flag', 'narc', and 'gaslight'. So over and misused as to be hollowed out of any real meaning. 'Entitled' is everywhere now too, really what more use does it serve than selfish or inconsiderate? And 'get rid'. It's oafish.

midsomermurderess · 09/09/2021 01:49

And Confused. It so bloody stupid and sneery and childish. I hear ever post with that attached as if delivered in upspeask. Actually the creeping use of upspeak on here, what should be statements ending with '?' and 'hysterical' punctuation?????!!. Leave that to teennagers, and Netmuns.

MurielSpriggs · 09/09/2021 02:25

@BoredZelda

I hate when people @ another post and respond to it in a vague way which means you have to trawl back to find it. Just quote the post or a part of it.

But also, those who respond to an OP, quoting the OP, as if we were unsure what their comment would be in reference to.

Ain't nobody got time for that.

If the poster does that then their post gets skipped over! And in fact the same as soon as I reach a sentence in any post that is so badly written or punctuated as to be incomprehensible without careful study and guesswork. NEXT! It's not like there's a shortage of posts on Mumsnet so yours is worth the effort of deciphering.

Naice ham - ham is ham and it’s not posh even with orange segments, maple glaze and cloves, blah blah it’s just ham

JustKittenAround · 09/09/2021 02:48

You got this

gofg · 09/09/2021 04:58

Another vote for "Give Your Head A Wobble"

And "Grim" - in the context it is used on MN

Mind you - that could just be because those aren't common in this part of the world!

I also grind my teeth when posters must point out grammatical or spelling errors in another post. All they are doing is making themselves look like arrogant dicks.

If a poster subjects others to the grammatical horrors of "should of," "I done XYZ" etc, why should the readers take this lying down?!

Cool wife or girlfriend annoys me

@traintraveller

Cool wife or girlfriend annoys me
I forgot about this. Its always used to invalidate someone's opinion.

"My boyfriend of 3 weeks has female friends, I want him to stop talking to them all AIBU"

YABU he is allowed female friends

"Oh ignore all the 'cool wives' who say this is OK, it's absolutely not OK at all"

Angry
MLMbotsno · 09/09/2021 10:51

you do you

my vag sealed up

boils piss

give head wobble

vom in mouth

Cocogreen · 09/09/2021 10:52

But what does " give your head a wobble" actually mean?
I've only been on MN for 6 months and I can't work it out.

MLMbotsno · 09/09/2021 10:57

@Cocogreen

it's one of those things some say but think they mean they don't agree with what someone says so think again 🤔

Makes them sound a bit thick

Never hear most of these irl no one talks this way Confused

Cocogreen · 09/09/2021 11:05

Thank you @MLMbotsno - I've been so mystified by that expression - never, ever heard it before.

ComtesseDeSpair · 09/09/2021 11:20

“Give your head a wobble” is regional, I think? Other than MN I’ve only ever heard it from friends who live in the Liverpool and Manchester area where it appears to mean “sort your thinking out”. I assume if you’re from those parts it’s just an everyday phrase and doesn’t seem like an MN oddity.

ComtesseDeSpair · 09/09/2021 11:26

But only on MN have I seen “breastfeeding” (or “BFing” or some reference to expressed breastmilk in a bottle) used incessantly where it has absolutely nothing to do with the actual topic or post and just “feeding” or even nothing about the feeding at all would be perfectly fine. It just comes across as wanting to make it clear that the user doesn’t want anyone to think they’re the sort of failure parent who uses formula.

I have loads of friends from the NW and have lived in Liverpool. Not once have I encountered the expression 'give your head a wobble' other than on MN.
