Gutted about NI rise

CarryOnNurse20 · 07/09/2021 10:46

I know we need it and we have so much money to pay off. But we have been scrimping and saving after a hard couple of years. Every penny is accounted for from pay day to pay day. I’m a nurse and my pay has been capped/below inflation my whole career. And now the NI rise means any savings etc we have made will now be gone. I’m gutted.

For fucksake this isn't about young v old, that's just a bloody distraction.

This is about fucking "Boris" and his super rich Eton old boy cronies fucking over ordinary working folk.

Stop with the who had it hardest bullshit and focus on the people with masses of unearned wealth that are protected by this sack of shite masquerading as a prime minister.

ShepherdessBoink · 08/09/2021 00:15

@longue

The state pension is based on NI paid: they've already paid it.

You don't pay into a pot that gets saved for you. I've paid since I was 17 so by the time Im 68 I'll have paid for 51 yrs when I only need to pay 35 years. I can't opt out though.

They should really make it a pot rather than a pyramid scheme where we work to pay NI for our parents SP and our children do the same.

Aside from those truly unable to work (disabled or long term illness) as well as subsidising cost of care for those who need it - I'd gladly contribute.

If you want to win people over to your way of thinking, I don't think this post is the way to do it.

I never voted for this government so my hands are clean

And mine 🙌🏻

You are most definitely NBU, OP.
I am appalled by BJ's decision to slap an extra tax burden on working people and not on pensioners.
Why didn't he choose to increase income tax instead, which everyone pays when their income is above the tax threshold? That would be so much fairer.

It makes me very angry, and sad, to think that a devoted carer, working in a care home for just above the minimum wage, will have to fork out more in tax so that the people they care for can hang onto more of their wealth.
It's ridiculously unfair and a cruel blow to hardworking younger people - and indeed to employers, although I daresay that the increase in employers' NI will ultimately be off-set with lower salaries - another blow to those in work.

NotMyCat · 08/09/2021 01:42

@Feelingoktoday

I think we need to remember that those moaning about their university fees probably didn’t start working until they were 22. My Dad who would be late 70s now started working at 15. He paid tax for an extra 7 years tax and NI
I started working at 13 on a work permit, then properly from 16 and all the way through uni. So I've 21 years of NI contributions so far

Spot on.

And no, you probably won’t win anyone over, because if they are still defending this government after all the payouts to friends and donors, the failed PPE, the failed Track and Trace, the trail of destruction left by Brexit, then the fact that you are telling the truth will make no difference to them.

Zandra123 · 08/09/2021 01:58

Working pensioners over 65 who don't currently pay national insurance will pay a social care levy from 2023 I read.

So depressing but true 😖

Borland · 08/09/2021 06:46

@weresouth

If you are going to be financially twatted by an extra 1.25% NI above the threshold (think it's about £120 a week), you must be earning a shit load and spending nearly all of it or more than you earn.

Someone earning 50k will pay an additional £500 a year. That's not insignificant & you may not be spending that 50k on shit but rather housing & childcare.

I agreed even if a couple is on £50k between them £500 per year is a lot extra to pay on top of already existing tax. Also it will make a big difference to the amount people can be offered in mortgages. I just had a pay rise worth about £250 per year after tax and I was surprised that we were able to get an extra almost £10k on our mortgage.

Yes, this will likely be the poorer pensioners. Better off ones won't need to work.

KhoshkaKatya · 08/09/2021 07:36

I think it’s really unfair. There is a lot of wealth locked up in assets that could contribute to care costs.

But no, low earners and young people have to shoulder this when they a re already really struggling to keep their heads above water.

It seems a move that is just bound to be ao unpopular too.

The only thing I can think of that makes any sense it’s some kind of gambit to stoke further resentment against pensions, and so people are Ok with them being reduced away to nothing and the pension age increased. Although that again wil lbe a burden on the younger people not those who have already retired.

What does that even mean "locked up" wealth? If you own land, shares or property outside your main home you pay tax. If you have properties in Trust or a company you pay tax.
LeafOfTruth · 08/09/2021 08:29

£12bn expected to be raised.
At least £6bn of that going to the NHS. Probably more.
More going to keep up the shortfall created by the lower cap on individual social spending.
End result: Less that £2bn to actually go towards social care improvement.

What ever this levy is about, it's not about fixing social care. It seems more to be a back handed way of paying for the pandemic and using that mechanism to protect family assets. As already pointed out, an £86k cap helps those with valuable assets far more than those with less valuable ones.

I wonder which group of people has investments in private health care and lots of assets they might want to protect...

KhoshkaKatya · 08/09/2021 08:34

@littlebillie. There is an industry dedicated to avoiding and minimising tax. Lots of trusts and companies are structured specifically to minimise tax liability.

And it’s not unreasonable to expect assets to be liquified in order to pay bills, rather than expecting the taxpayer to pick up the tab.

Onlinedilema · 08/09/2021 08:36

JesusMary exactly.
For the love of God open your eyes people.

Onlinedilema · 08/09/2021 08:38

This government has squandered billions of public money on feathering the nests of their wealthy mates and family.
Now they expect the working poor to pay for this.
No.
That's the bottom line, no.

Realyorkshiretea · 08/09/2021 08:40

It’s the pensioners/older people who voted him in!! He didn’t just appear in a puff of smoke! Yes he is a sack of shit, but the older generation tory voters are his enablers! You can’t blame working people for feeling some resentment towards them! They also brought us the delight that is Brexit!
Peregrina · 08/09/2021 08:45

You needed 40 years of contributions once to get the full pension. I was a couple of years short so paid up the difference - and then they changed the law to reduce the number of years. If I'd known I'd have saved my money.

As for people working hard to get their money - for ordinary folks, yes, for people like Rishi Sunak - he married money. His FIL and his own parents might well have been hard workers but there is no evidence to show that he worked hard to get rich. But he's the Chancellor, so guess which sort of people's wealth is going to be protected?

Blossomtoes · 08/09/2021 08:48

You can’t blame pensioners for the shitshow’s landslide majority. We’re not to blame for all the world’s woes. Blame everyone who fell for Get Brexit Done, blame the red wall for turning blue, blame all the people posting here in December 2019 who didn’t want to pay more tax - ha, that went well. I notice nobody’s owning up to voting Tory on here now, I wonder where they’ve all gone.

Onlinedilema · 08/09/2021 08:49

Really I agree totally.
I'm quite glad that those Brexiteers can no longer sit in their homes in Spain (stereotyping I know) and now have to come back to the U K more often.
I also feel quite glad that these older people who voted for this government have now been thrown under the bus, karma I think.

Onlinedilema · 08/09/2021 08:50

I really wish Andy Burnham was PM, just been listening his opinion about the NI increase.
