Or is that a bit ' late ' ?

It entirely depends what the job is.

Marmite27 · 06/09/2021 18:26

I’d say it was late.

It’s 9am at your desk, logged on and ready to work IMO.

chipsandpeas · 06/09/2021 18:27

i need to be in and logged in to start at 9

ToykotoLosAngeles · 06/09/2021 18:28

Depends. If you walk straight onto a shop floor, maybe OK, but if you spend 10 minutes making tea and waiting for your computer to warm up it's a pisstake.

Parky04 · 06/09/2021 18:28

Need to be ready to work at 9.00.

MagnoliaBeige · 06/09/2021 18:28

As long as you can start actually doing your work at 9am, you’re not late. If you have to set anything up to be able to start work, then you’re late.

Vitcserum · 06/09/2021 18:28

I think most office jobs would consider that late. If you work using a computer you would need to be logged in and starting at 9am.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 06/09/2021 18:29

Well unless you work immediately inside the door then yes! Surely you need at least a few minutes to remove coat, go to toilet/check hair etc not to mention grab a coffee and engage in the morning chit chat with people before you settle down to work? I know I do. I'd find it too stressful to rush in and sit down to work immediately, I enjoy the 10 minutes or so of "settling in" time

PotteringAlong · 06/09/2021 18:29

I think it’s late.

fat13 · 06/09/2021 18:29

Considered very late where I work which is ridiculous really but it’s how it is.

Unanananana · 06/09/2021 18:30

In my job, that would be late. We are expected to be ready to start at our appointed time, not just walking through the door.

Zealois · 06/09/2021 18:30

That's really going to depend on the company. I've had jobs before where 9am meant 9am on the dot, not a minute before or after.

However, my current job is incrediby flexible on time (work 'starts' at 9:30 in theory but people arrive anywhere been 9am and 10am) with nobody keeping track of times.

Chloemol · 06/09/2021 18:30

No it’s not big you start work at 9am you are at your desk it whatever 5 minutes before.

How would it work if shops open at 9am and no one is there to serve?

Bedpost · 06/09/2021 18:30

My job wouldn’t be that anal to consider that late as it’s just an office job where as long as I get my work done roughly 9-5 it’s fine-they don’t track where I am every minute of the day. I imagine it’s different for shift work where you take over from someone at a certain time exactly

LadyLolaRuben · 06/09/2021 18:30

You need to be working at 9 not just arriving.

ThePoint678 · 06/09/2021 18:30

If you’re on time, you’re late. Surely you’d need to put your bag down and go to your work area so you need to allow time for that.

LegendaryReady · 06/09/2021 18:30

Starting work at 9am, not taking your coat off, putting lunch in the fridge and making a cuppa.

That said I have one member of staff who does arrive on the dot daily and whilst I am a bit irritated by it, she's so perfect and contentious in every other way, I let it go Grin

LegendaryReady · 06/09/2021 18:31

Conscientious. If she was contentious I wouldn't let it go!

theculture · 06/09/2021 18:31

9am

If for example one person has a computer that takes 15mins to boot up and one only 2 mins it's not in their control so it can't be right that one has to arrive earlier to boot their computer!

fat13 · 06/09/2021 18:31

@Chloemol

No it’s not big you start work at 9am you are at your desk it whatever 5 minutes before.

Your shift would normally start at 830 tbf
LuckyLuckyWoman · 06/09/2021 18:32

IMO that's late. Start at 9 means being where you need to be ready to actually start at 9

Ted27 · 06/09/2021 18:32

It depends on the job.

Part of my team run a helpdesk service operates from 09.00 to 17.00
Call handlers need to be at their desks ready to take calls or answer emails.

If I have a meeting which starts at 9, I need to be there before 9 to get ready. Other than that as long as I’m in before 9.30 it doesnt matter. It suits my team as the other manager likes to start early and finish at 4. I prefer to start and finish later.
But we are on flexi time so we can do that

TooWicked · 06/09/2021 18:32

Depends where you work.

When I worked for the NHS (admin) it was quite common for the usual pisstakers to walk in at 9am, go and make their porridge and a coffee, switch their computer on, eat their breakfast, have a wander up and down the corridor to chat to everyone, and they were good to start some actual work at about 10.10am for 20 minutes before their first coffee break.

That was apparently deemed acceptable.

Housemum · 06/09/2021 18:32

I work with a lady who turns up at her start time on the dot, never a moment earlier, but she literally sits down and starts so I wouldn't consider that late. Personally I just arrive any time before my start time and get going. As previous posters have said, turning up at 9 but not being ready to start for 5/10 mins is late

Moonbabysmum · 06/09/2021 18:32

I'd say it depends.

It's not an ideal arrival time if it's every day, and i think even if someone didn't formally day something, i think it would be seen as a bit lazy.

But equally, if i sometimes arrived at that time, i wouldn't have thought i was late as long as it wasn't my norm, if that makes sense. I'd think it was very petty if someone made a big deal of it. To
