Tourists exodus today relieved

justasking111 · 30/08/2021 09:16

Well it's over today the tsunami of tourists will be gone.

We have never experienced such, rudeness, aggressive behaviour from them as we have this summer. Our businesses have limped along short staffed, been abused, threatened as have locals. The littering has been something else.

I know everyone has had a bad year but so have the Welsh our lockdowns harder and longer than others.

We still wear masks in shops fgs

So hopefully you all had good holidays but glad of a bit of peace now

Why not just complain that you’ve experienced some really awful behaviour this Summer?

This!

Surely a load of those visitors have holiday homes there or are coming back to see family?

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHaands · 31/08/2021 22:48

Many (most even, in many areas) of us are still wearing masks in shops. And not even because the law says so but because we are responsible human beings

Crummyfunnymummy · 31/08/2021 22:50

In fact I’ve just read back the OP and it’s really quite unpleasantly phrased isn’t it? No need!

goldfinchfan · 31/08/2021 23:08

Population explosion
A village of 1000 reaches 7 times this in peak season.
I grew up on London it is nothing like a small village and can easily absorb tourists,
So stop pretending you can compare London to a small village or town

I have no idea of the behavour of hospitality staff in my area because it is impossible to go anywhere where there are crowds eg everywhere

herethereandeverywhere · 31/08/2021 23:14

So pleased I don't holiday in these places - could not bear to be spending my money in places full of such disrespectful unfriendly whiny bleating folk.

I had a wonderful holiday in Greece this summer. I'll continue to spend my money outside of the UK. So much more enjoyable and far better value.

ohfourfoxache · 31/08/2021 23:21

I’ve only read Op’s posts

However, I have lived in London all my life and, for only the second time ever, I’m currently in Wales

I was a bit nervous because I wasn’t sure what sort of reception we’d get from the locals, but they have been so friendly and welcoming.

But having just been into the park complex to pick up a couple of emergency items, I was the only tourist in there with a mask on Sad

Those poor workers, who are literally dealing with people from all over the country - this is not going to do us any favours and it’s no wonder that the area I’m staying in is a covid hotspot. I’m not saying that everyone is behaving selfishly - out and about outside the park everyone else seems to be being sensible. But I’m absolutely shocked at some of the wankerish behaviour I’ve seen in the last couple of days

I’m actually dreading the schools going back now…..I had been looking forward to it but I suspect it’s going to be a shit show Sad

JeanneDoe · 01/09/2021 00:59

I usually go to Greece where the locals seem delighted to have tourists back and in my experience, are unfailingly polite and friendly. Holidays in Wales sound awful if locals can’t wait to get rid of them. Won’t be rushing to Wales and time soon, will stick with the Med.

sassbott · 01/09/2021 06:05

And again @znaika refuses to answer the question. Let me put them to you again.

Have you ever been on holiday? If so where?
What is your solution to the problems you are bringing up. Because let me repeat. This is a basic supply/ demand issue.

Re the London issues?

Yes of course the infrastructure is far better than in rural areas. But if you want to actually tell me that infrastructure is unaffected? BS.

After concerts at Hyde park you can have to walk much further to get to tubes as due to capacity issues they close or nearby tubes to exit only. Try getting on at Oxford Circus etc after a concert ends. It’s carnage and the queues can be horrendous. Ascot/ Henley exactly the same. Leave at the wrong time and you can be queueing for hours to get back to central London on the train. The M4 becomes a car park. I suppose the other option is a helicopter but I guess you could use those as options in rural areas right?
Match day at twickenham. Again there are no other options. You either leave your car home and don’t attempt to go out locally because it’s carnage. Or you get out pre match and return after the match has ended and the spectators have left the stadium. Otherwise it too can take hours to get anywhere. Again? There are no options that all seem to think exist. Unless of course I guess you bike or walk. But you can do that in Cornwall too right?

In terms of the housing commentary. That is in response to the various comments regarding second home owners (and they also seem to be from London). London and other areas have the exact same issues, and there are NO options. Property prices are being pushed up by overseas buyers and now Uk banks pushing into the rental market. It’s a serious problem everywhere.

So what is it you (and others) suggest happens? Come up with some solutions. Then lobby MP’s government. Get petitions going. Bring people together to try and solve this. Don’t cause such sneery divisiveness.

I’m astounded at the amount of poster sitting here saying ‘they won’t return.’ That’s the aim you want to achieve. Be so rude online, people don’t return. Well it won’t work with me. I will keep returning, because that’s my right as a British citizen. You can froth all you want and be as rude as you wish, everyone I deal with where I holiday was happy, kind, pleasant. As were my family and I. We’ll be back this year and next and probably the year after.

If however you have a petition you would like to circulate to try and get some changes happening, if be happy to lend my support.

Sadiecow · 01/09/2021 06:18

The good news is that lots of people have bought dogs, so holidaying in the UK will increase.

👏 👏

Brokensunflower · 01/09/2021 06:48

I often holiday In the UK.we have a camper van and are outdoorsy types so it suits us to go to the countryside or occasionally the coast to relax ,walk and have the odd glass of wine in a country pub.

I've hated it this year as people not usually to be found in the countryside have been out there. It's been rowdy, littered and felt more like Benedorm than pretty English villages.

Coogee · 01/09/2021 07:13

London averages between 21-30 million visitors annually with a population of 8.9 million. So tripling the London population.

Do they all come at the same time?

bex35 · 01/09/2021 07:59

I live near to an area that attracts tourists and yes it can be busy and it gets frustrating at times.
However, when I hear these people that moan about tourists I always wonder do they not visit other areas and countries and shock, horror become tourists.

Many areas have spent years encouraging tourists to visit and now moan but many people have businesses that would not survive without tourists.

I don’t think rudeness, aggressive behaviour, littering is because someone is a tourist it’s the type of person that they are. There are plenty of these people everywhere unfortunately.

Everyone seems to be so unkind at the moment and I don’t understand it, life is too short!!

Carlosi456 · 01/09/2021 08:04

Yep. Here in the South West 'visitors' are noticably louder and pushier than the locals. Not all of them but the 'entitled' few. Parking inappropriately, no masks in the local shop and just general inpatience and pushy behaviour. It's a slower pace of life down here and they're on holiday yet there seems to be a need to assert themselves. Just chill people!

ithoughtisawapuddycat · 01/09/2021 08:07

I live in a tourist area and our season continues for at least another couple of months but the main problems caused is traffic related and the tends to only be at weekends.

The rubbish in the main tourists areas this morning was disgusting. It made me want to pull over and start picking it up. Our town was beautiful during the first lockdown, peaceful and not a piece of rubbish to be seen. But we need those tourists to keep the town alive so can't complain too much.

Malteser71 · 01/09/2021 08:26

Some tourists actually pick litter up....I go to the same place a lot. I will pick litter on the beach (in fact anywhere) because I like to care for the place. Equally, I know a lot about the history of the town. It’s a place I love dearly, there are plenty of tourists like me.

MrsDThomas · 01/09/2021 08:33

@Brokensunflower that’s exactly what the problem is. They have no idea how to respect the countryside. Just because they do whatever in Benidorm doesn't mean you can behave like that in the countryside.

5zeds · 01/09/2021 08:39

The littering is revolting. It’s sad to see places you’ve admired for years trashed so quickly. I honestly don’t understand why you wouldn’t look forward to it slowing.

DecadentlyDecisive · 01/09/2021 08:41

Exactly!!

The sooner cheap package holidays are "do-able" for folk, the better!!

Elphame · 01/09/2021 08:48

Still loads of tourists here in my bit of North Wales.

I just wanted to pick up a loaf from our local Spar/bakery and there was a long queue down the road with them just letting in one at a time. I went without.

The litter on the mountain though - horrible.. I’ve never seen it so bad,

Alittlenonsensenowandthen · 01/09/2021 08:49

Sorry haven't read full thread but I'm also in a semi touristy part of Wales and what I've noticed is that English tourists just don't get that the rules are different here and get shirty when told to put masks on. I'm not in retail or tourism but have noticed staff being rudely spoken to. I moved here because of the 'tourist dollar' - it means my town is well kept and interesting. However, covid has brought out the Welsh/English divide I think. Created by our politicians point scoring over their handling of the pandemic.

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 01/09/2021 09:10

Yes i think this is right

I was thinking of a weekend in wales for our wedding anniversary and the town web page links to the welsh covid rules…but not everyone looks at town websites

MondayYogurt · 01/09/2021 09:15

There's a wider issue here with littering being seen as acceptable by many people in the UK. We have the most litter in Europe.

ConstanceGracy · 01/09/2021 09:23

@thatyouleavebehind

God I live in a touristy area and I for one am relieved it's nearly over. Tourists do my nut in
I do hope you never visit anywhere on holiday then!
Crummyfunnymummy · 01/09/2021 09:34
