Tourists exodus today relieved

justasking111 · 30/08/2021 09:16

Well it's over today the tsunami of tourists will be gone.

We have never experienced such, rudeness, aggressive behaviour from them as we have this summer. Our businesses have limped along short staffed, been abused, threatened as have locals. The littering has been something else.

I know everyone has had a bad year but so have the Welsh our lockdowns harder and longer than others.

We still wear masks in shops fgs

So hopefully you all had good holidays but glad of a bit of peace now

It’s attitudes like yours that make people not want to holiday in the UK. You personally may not be reliant on tourists but your area sure is and you’d be sorry if nobody ever came back.

Sadiecow · 30/08/2021 19:29

@Neverrains

Leicestershire schools have already gone back.
Is that earlier than usual?
justasking111 · 30/08/2021 19:33

When folks huff that they'll take their money elsewhere an image of cissie and ada comes to mind which makes me giggle ☺️

Bits of Wales and Cornwall/Devon pride themselves in hating outsiders, grockles and all that. I’ve never encountered the same in other rural areas of the UK. I don’t really get the Cornwall thing anyway, yes it’s lovely but it’s also crowded, expensive and really hard to get to. Far quicker to get to say Northumberland from London than it would be to Cornwall and the beaches are way better.
It's emmets in Cornwall, not grockles 😂
Neverrains · 30/08/2021 19:36

Is that earlier than usual?

They always go back earlier than the rest of the country but this year they went back before the bank holiday which is slightly earlier than usual. They finished on the 9th July.

Notafootballfan · 30/08/2021 20:02

We've just came back from a holiday tour Wales. I was very mindful of being polite and courteous to the staff we encountered and anyone I observed in restaurants did the same.
We thought we were doing the right thing trying to support local businesses so I'm disappointed to hear your opinion OP and sorry tourists aren't welcome.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 30/08/2021 20:04

The fairest way to improve the infrastructure to accommodate more visitors comfortably would be a tourist tax on all holiday accommodation

In theory maybe, but it would be much more likely to be spent on a whole new range of staff, committe meetings and visits to sunny places to "help" in deciding how to spend it Hmm

Tiana4 · 30/08/2021 20:09

The M2 becomes a car park in rush hour and when Dover ports have issues , it backs up miles and towns become grid locked. My cousin commutes to work from mid kent- used to by car but does it by motorbike or he could spend 2 hours either way in rush hour on the M2 into London.

Look up the train times first to get an idea of journey length - from Kent it's into Victoria , fromHampshire it's into Waterloo, etc

sassbott · 30/08/2021 20:11

Well I’m leaving my UK holiday tomorrow morning.
I’ve been polite and happy and so has everyone locally who we have dealt with. Most business owners have breathed a sigh of relief for the influx of cash after such a brutal year.

I cannot believe the amount of posters saying they won’t bother holidaying again because of some random posters who are clearly here to wind people up. 😂😂😂.

I base my experience on the lovely time we’ve had and have already rebooked for next summer. Thank you to all the locals who have accommodated the mass influx of tourists x

Tiana4 · 30/08/2021 20:11

Whoops wrong thread!

Happylittlethoughts · 30/08/2021 20:16

I think if you live in a tourist area you have probably experienced a shift in the usual tourist behaviour. By this I am particularly meaning British/same country tourists.
I live near Loch Lomond and the aggression, littering, lack of social responsibility, rudeness etc has been off the scale. Couldn't go near local areas.
I understand your relief OP.

UrbanRambler · 30/08/2021 20:21

@RufustheBadgeringReindeer

Just about everyone is a tourist at one time or another

Its not tourists that are the problem…its awful people

I agree, but tourist spots do get horribly crowded during the summer, so I can understand what a relief it must be when the end of the season comes around.

YANBU to be relieved OP, but the wording of your post is a little divisive.

5128gap · 30/08/2021 20:33

Well I love Wales and will go there as and when I see fit. The only part of Wales you have more entitlement to than I is the property you own there. I am not impolite or antisocial and if you have a business that relies on my custom, you will benefit from my visit. If you don't and I am merely an inconvenience by adding to congestion in your area, then why not visit quieter areas during your locally busy time? We are all free to go where we wish now, and none of us own our towns. I am sorry you experience anti social behaviour. It can be a problem where I live too.

Rhinothunder · 30/08/2021 20:43

Bet you took their money though.

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 30/08/2021 20:54

but tourist spots do get horribly crowded during the summer

Can’t argue with that

transformandriseup · 30/08/2021 21:04

Summer is a always challenging in a touristy area and regards of options of dependency on income I don't know anyone who lives here that doesn't feel relieved at the end of summer when things start to quieten down a bit. It's a completely normal feeling.

Plus when we go on holiday we become tourists too.

RacistAngst · 30/08/2021 21:13

@Rhinothunder

Bet you took their money though.
Is that enough to allow people to be aggressive, entitled or sneering?
MuddlingMackem · 30/08/2021 23:51

@MsTSwift , which part(s) of the north east did you visit? Very curious. Grin

The OP's post won't put us off from holidaying in the UK, we can't afford abroad! And we like Wales although don't get there very often.

I do think everyone working in the service industries has had a tough pandemic, so many customers so impatient and think they should have everything instantly, when there are staff and other shortages country wide.

I saw a meme on Facebook recently which pretty much summed up the current situation. It said: The whole world is short staffed - please be kind to those who turned up.

Jakadaal · 31/08/2021 00:06

We paid a lot of money to staycation here in a tourist area/activity and the attitude of the local people was appalling with lots of 'people like you' comments. People like us who spent our hard earned money in their local towns and villages. We weren't rude or ill mannered we were simply there! So next year our money will be spent holidaying in a country who welcomes visitors

hibbledibble · 31/08/2021 00:12

OP's sort of attitude is what I'll never go to another touristy area again.

Shops were very expensive, and one even asked for extra money from us for being a tourist, as their advertised prices were for 'locals only'. Pretty sure that's illegal. The feeling was we despise you, but are happy to take your money.

5zeds · 31/08/2021 00:33

Not everyone in the “tourist” areas you visit makes money from tourists. For the rest of us it’s adds expense and inconvenience. It’s weird that anyone wouldn’t understand that.

peachykeenjellybaby · 31/08/2021 06:53

I have holidayed in the UK a couple of times this year

Didn't witness any poor behaviour. Places were very busy. Some establishments clearly couldn't
Cope, were short staffed. We understand the reasons why.

Some places were brilliant and visibly working hard to please their customers

We took extra care to be polite, understanding and conscious that places are doing their best under difficult circumstances

As far as i can tell, other people around us did the same

Dickheads are in the minority. Always

stepupandbecounted · 31/08/2021 06:57

When you finally go on holiday op I hope you are 'treated' to the same attitude and are made to feel unwelcome and uncomfortable. Karma is a beautiful thing.

CovidCorvid · 31/08/2021 07:03

I used to live in Tenby, so tourist central. I may not have made money directly from tourists but I still benefited from them. The nice shops, pubs, cafes which were open throughout Pembs and which I sometimes visited were there mainly because of tourists. Plenty of friends worked directly in tourism which meant they stayed local and contributed to the economy including the more “locals” pubs and normal shops….so they stayed open. They had kids who attended the local schools so the schools stayed open. 🤷‍♀️ Yes the traffic could be a nightmare and there is no excuse for rudeness but overall I liked the tourists.
