Tourists exodus today relieved

840 replies

justasking111 · 30/08/2021 09:16

Well it's over today the tsunami of tourists will be gone.

We have never experienced such, rudeness, aggressive behaviour from them as we have this summer. Our businesses have limped along short staffed, been abused, threatened as have locals. The littering has been something else.

I know everyone has had a bad year but so have the Welsh our lockdowns harder and longer than others.

We still wear masks in shops fgs

So hopefully you all had good holidays but glad of a bit of peace now

@mbosnz

I'm feeling a bit sorry for Spain. . . seems like every second Mumsnetter has either just come from there, or is just about to go. . . Grin
We’ve just come back, it’s my home country and my family still live there. They’re glad of the tourists!
muffinffaces · 30/08/2021 17:26

Although I love London over Christmas as it's quiet & parking is a doddle

mbosnz · 30/08/2021 17:27

Neverrains, must have been lovely to see the family again, and for them to see you!

FrauleinSchweiger · 30/08/2021 17:27

@Chesneyhawkes1 - excellent and hope you have a good time. Rest assured most people down here are also glad to have tourists back. It's just the small percentage of knobheads that are bringing the tone down Grin

MrsDThomas · 30/08/2021 17:27

@essentialhealing move? You think that’s the answer?

Its our home. Were we live and breathe. We speak a language that is loved, we have a longing for it. Its where we raise our family, and I have done so in a house lived my generations.

So no, moving is not something we should do.

What should be done is learning the basics of being polite, dont shit in the sand, don’t burn the cheap barbecue tray on the mountain, dont leave your litter, there is no toilet on Wyddfa. Just because you see a field, it doesn’t mean you can park your car there. Learn your basic countryside code.

muffinffaces · 30/08/2021 17:28

move? You think that’s the answer?

Tbf whenever a Londoner complains about being priced out the advice is to move away despite the fact that means leaving family & community behind.

Marni83 · 30/08/2021 17:30
@Marni83 - yes it's always busy in the summer but the effects of Covid are still with us in terms of stock in shops and people in the hospitality industry. And it has been noticeably busier than other years (certainly where I live).

I don't know who you are addressing when you say "prepare for it"???

I think most businesses have done their level best but some things are beyond their control. I personally know two young people (as in teenagers) who have been verbally abused by tourists because they had to wait longer than normal for service. They are still bright enough to know that these tossers are in the minority but you can certainly understand how their impressions of tourists might have been changed.
This “omg the influx of horrible tourists and our infrastructure isn’t set up for it”

Has been repeated over and over for many years

Sort your infrastructure FGS!

duckme · 30/08/2021 17:33

This is why we went through the rigmarole of testing to have our main holiday in France as usual this year.
Aside from being ripped off everywhere and the weather being unreliable, resulting in everyone cramming into the same overpriced places, I couldn't bring myself to spend our money on places where the locals actively disliked us being there but are happy to have our money.
We have actually had a few lovely short breaks in this country, London in August was amazing and the hotel staff were genuinely happy to have the hotel back open, to have us there and they were exited that the first Americans were arriving that week as the travel restrictions had been eased, but I couldn't justify spending the same for a week in this country as a fortnight abroad would cost.

A good source of Spanish information is El Pais they're struggling with tourists too

@FrauleinSchweiger thank you. That's a shame. Always a small minority ruining it for everyone.

justasking111 · 30/08/2021 17:38

@shinynewapple21

Some of us only arrived Saturday *@justasking111* and are here for the rest of the week!!

Beaches seem lovely and quiet as usual Smile

I think this week must generally be quieter though as rental properties seemed fully booked until this week .

It's a lot quieter than the usual Bank holiday are schools going back early or are people just tired of the UK break

Blimey @Marni83 - why are you shouting at me! You seem v irate when I have attempted to explain that actually this year has been exceptional.

Infrastructure improvements are happening dreckly - 2023 Carland Cross to Chiverton don't you know. Would you like to come and cut the ribbon?

You are lucky drakeford has stopped all road improvements completely. Welsh roads won't improve any time soon. He's aiming to spend on a universal income for all

@HesterShaw1

Inflammatory nonsense? Really? Say that to the poster upthread whose children overheard two locals in Cornwall on a bus saying to one another that they should “burn down their homes like they do in Wales.” Nice.

Sorry but that’s well out of order. Who would even say this type of thing within earshot of children? But yeah, it’s just inflammatory nonsense I guess.

It’s bang out of order and should be called out for the ignorant nastiness that it is.

Northernsoullover · 30/08/2021 18:06

I'm a Welsh person who holidayed in Wales and yes tourists are welcome. This year definitely has spiked a rise in bad behaviour and attitudes. My friends run a holiday park and they will be also be relieved when overseas travel resumes..A big sticking point has been the fact that people couldn't eat out easily. However this, as far as I can gather is a UK wide problem.

Yes… I mentioned this upthread. The issue is mainly Spanish and French teens/young adults who are hiring the places usually taken by British families. My family’s town has really struggled with this issue.

Yes, first time in 20 months! It was wonderful Smile

No schools are not going back early and unless people are willing to wage ££££££ then they've not just cancelled their holidays.

What utter nonsense on both counts!

Neverrains · 30/08/2021 18:15

Leicestershire schools have already gone back.

Marni83 · 30/08/2021 18:19

* Would you like to come and cut the ribbon?*

Shudder!

NantesElephant · 30/08/2021 18:26

The fairest way to improve the infrastructure to accommodate more visitors comfortably would be a tourist tax on all holiday accommodation. Other countries do this and I don’t mind paying it when I visit.

BlackAlys · 30/08/2021 18:30

@LaurieFairyCake

The problem isn't 'tourists' - it's underinvestment in Wales and the South West meaning the pandemic is MUCH more of a threat to them

There are too few hospitals/doctors/nurses etc and a much greater elderly population

Add to that fucking Brexit and less European money and fewer staff - the whole thing is fucked

And a further problem is that it's of course expensive - ONLY in comparison to a £30 flight to Majorca etc - so people feel gibbed/ripped off wherever they go

Couldn't agree more.

Certain parts of Wales and South West, local people are priced out of buying homes where they are born so are moving away. No workers for hospitality (thanks Brexiteers) so the industry is woefully short staffed. Tourists who don't normally do staycations expect the equivalent for their hard-earned cash so food and alcohol prices here are so different to the Balearics etc.

shinynewapple21 · 30/08/2021 18:33

@SkiingIsHeaven

If you are short staffed and your customers are not happy, perhaps hire extra staff so you provide a proper service.

I think the short staffed is mainly due to isolating due to Covid contacts . The new isolation rules only apply to double jabbed and many hospitality workers haven't yet had the opportunity due to their age .

There is also likely less hospitality workers from other countries due either to Brexit or Covid travel rules

Grilledaubergines · 30/08/2021 18:57

@OlympicProcrastinator

Don’t worry, we will all be spending our money abroad next year. Cheaper, friendlier and with guaranteed weather.
Yes absolutely this. It’s been made clear by those in tourist areas that tourists aren’t welcome. I work damned hard for my money and I absolutely won’t give it to these people. When it’s safe to go aboard, I will, and until then I’ll stay close to home in south London.
Oakmaiden · 30/08/2021 19:16

I find it hilarious, the people who decide the will "never holiday in Wales" entirely due to a couple of random people on the internet being fed up of tourists.
