Not going to the cinemas anymore

I used to go the cinemas quite regularly years ago but over the past five years I reckon I've gone about 3 times in total, the last film I went to watch was Rocketman. Is anyone else the same as me?

What, you mean you weren't going to the cinema during lockdown?

I guess a lot of people got out of the habit. Are there any good films out?

underneaththeash · 29/08/2021 20:16

I love going - maybe choose a different venue if you haven't enjoyed the last one?

ToykotoLosAngeles · 29/08/2021 20:19

It's only £7 at the Odeon near me at the moment. I have Limitless so go around twice a week!

carrotcakecream · 29/08/2021 20:19

No even before lockdown the amount of times I was going was not a lot, I went two years at one point without going, I remember because I went to see the Bridget Jones film which I think was in 2016 and then I didn't go again until A Star is Born which was around 2 years later, then I went to see rocketman which was the film I've been to see.

I think I got out the habit of going to be honest

We got into the habit of only going to the Everyman cinema, Which is near us. They’re so comfortable, and we loved having food and a glass of wine brought to our sofa. I suppose we’ve got lazy though, big telly, surround sound, it’s easier, and a lot cheaper to watch films at home.

TenThousandSpoons · 29/08/2021 20:22

Ours is £7 and we take our own popcorn. Have gone about once a month whenever they’ve been open.

MeredithGreyishblue · 29/08/2021 20:23

Our local one is currently subsidised by the government. £2.50-£3.50 a seat. We've been A LOT over the school hols!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 29/08/2021 20:24

Cinema trips can be expensive but can also be a lot more reasonable. Some vue cinemas are £5 a ticket, our local one is 7 or 8.
I bank with Lloyd's and always choose the 6 free cinema tickets reward that comes with my club Lloyd's account.
And there's meercat codes too that mean I can go with a friend and we both pay half.

Sarah180818 · 29/08/2021 20:24

Odeon is quite pricey but we've been going to the Vue which is much cheaper. Can also get cheaper tickets through kid's pass

TheatricalGiraffe · 29/08/2021 20:24

I go through waves with the cinema, I won't go for months then suddenly about 5 things get released that I want to see, I've been 4 times in the last month...

The vue near me is only like £7 and its one of the comfy ones with reclining seats :)

Maybe theres been nothing on you want to see?

pinkcattydude · 29/08/2021 20:25

Oh no we love to go went this weekend and it was fab to be back. There are some films I ‘need’ to
See at the cinema, but there’s a lot of films if the came out to download straight away we’d probably just do that.

Neverrains · 29/08/2021 20:25

I haven’t been for about 8 years. By the time we’ve paid for a babysitter plus tickets it’s just not worth it for me.

lannistunut · 29/08/2021 20:26

I had got back into the cinema and teh threatre pre-covid, now I don;t fancy either again!

RampantIvy · 29/08/2021 20:28

Our local Vue cinema has been charging £4.99 to see a film for a few years now.

broccolibush · 29/08/2021 20:29

I used to go all the time before the beginning of last year. We had unlimited passes so would go to see everything. We stopped going because of all the people who think getting their phone out to check messages during the screening was ok. Honestly in the last four months there wasn’t a single film that wasn’t spoiled by bright white screens popping up in our eyeline and spoiling the show. The cinema staff were abused if they ever spoke to people about it. So we don’t go anymore. Spoiled by selfish bastards.

Faithtrusts · 29/08/2021 20:29

I used to love the cinema but the increasing use of smart phones drove me crazy. People sit there after having paid 12 quid to watch a film and use their phones the whole time just as if they were at home.

I just find it so distracting its pitch black then suddenly super bright light to pull your attention out of the film you are watching. It just seems so rude, madness how people can't leave their phones alone for an hour...

So I don't enjoy it the same anymore so I just don't pay over the odds when I can watch at home on a decent sized tv

Faithtrusts · 29/08/2021 20:30

Some bounceback grant. Not sure of the detail. It's a Reel cinema.

The screens have been spotless and you get a row to yourself so it feels safe.

Rizzoli123 · 29/08/2021 20:33

Husband took the kids to see paw patrol and we went last week to she the around the world in 80 days one. Film was ok but I got to the lindt shop so bonus for me 😂. Off this week as a treat before back to school husband wants to see the croods but not sure kids will think me and them would love to see paw patrol. Our local is cineworld and charges 40 for the 4 of us.

Retrievemysanity · 29/08/2021 20:33

We go quite a lot. Our Reel cinema is cheap and if I’m with the DC, I get in free as a carer. I did get out the habit when they were babies and toddlers though. Sometimes DH and I will go in the day when the kids are at school.

CovidCorvid · 29/08/2021 20:34

I last went pre covid and it was £14 a ticket, odeon. We have the most expensive odeon in the country I think. My brother says his was £3 last time he went. Our Everyman is over £20. No other cinema in an hour radius which I think is the issue. I rarely go. Wait for it to be released on dvd/download.

Marcee · 29/08/2021 20:36

Ours is £2.50 any movie before starting before 1pm
Any movie starting after 1pm is £3.50

VanishingAct · 29/08/2021 20:38

Haven't been to the cinema in about 5 years. Best enjoyed, in my experience, as a solo outing on a mid-week afternoon. Some delicious (non-crunchy and non-rustly) snacks and a couple of M&S cocktails in a tin. Three other people in the cinema. Bliss.

Must do this shortly!
