Not going to the cinemas anymore

carrotcakecream · 29/08/2021 19:50

I used to go the cinemas quite regularly years ago but over the past five years I reckon I've gone about 3 times in total, the last film I went to watch was Rocketman. Is anyone else the same as me?

I pay £25 a month for an Everyman membership which gives me 24 tickets a year and on Mondays I can bring someone with me for free. So DP and I often go on a Monday evening.

@VanishingAct

Haven't been to the cinema in about 5 years. Best enjoyed, in my experience, as a solo outing on a mid-week afternoon. Some delicious (non-crunchy and non-rustly) snacks and a couple of M&S cocktails in a tin. Three other people in the cinema. Bliss.

Must do this shortly!

I love this idea! After the school holidays obviously

Our Vue is only £5 too

mogsrus · 30/08/2021 13:49

loving the comments about the cost, how much do you think it costs to run these places? one ticket barely covers one persons hourly wage.

I don't think they are making much money from the movie itself, the profit is through the snacks sales. Here we are not able to take our own snacks in, they have to been bought onsite. The popcorn prices are more than the ticket. Of course you don't have to buy the popcorn etc, but most people do.
mogsrus · 30/08/2021 14:12

if they didn't sell snacks & things,i guarantee they would not open the doors. film rental is very high.

CrackerGal · 30/08/2021 14:18

@DrMadelineMaxwell

9 should be fine. There's violence but not blood and gore type as it's video game style. And a swear word or two.

I've seen it twice as I really enjoyed it.

Perfect thank you so much!
Cassimin · 30/08/2021 14:20

We love the cinema, my foster son has autism and it’s one of the only things he enjoys.
My son and his girlfriend bought a cheap insurance with compare the market just so they could get the 2 for 1 offers. Works out really inexpensive for them.
Also to bear in mind if you or your child qualify for DLA you can buy a CEA card, that gets a carer in free.

CrackerGal · 30/08/2021 14:20

@HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime

We loved Free Guy, it's like an action packed Truman show.

For a 9 year old I'd say if they've seen Marvel films then the action and fighting is on a similar level but there is a bit more swearing. No nudity or sex though.

Thank you too! Yes that's what I was worried about if there was any sex in it.
Fubitch · 30/08/2021 14:30

An ex colleague used to call it cinemas plural. I wonder if it's a regional thing.

Shellingbynight · 30/08/2021 14:43

Our local cinema is £12 a seat. We go three or four times a year but the price is a bit offputting, I'd go more if it was cheaper. As it is I sometimes wait till a film arrives on Prime / Netflix.

Me too, but just the £95 one. But they top you up with freebies pretty often as well.

£95 gets me 7 free tickets, which becomes 14 if we go on Mondays. Plus no booking fees, 2 for 1 every Monday, free stuff like cocktails, Green and Blacks chocolates, etc etc. Pays for itself in no time.

@SuperLoudPoppingAction I’ve just seen Free Guy and loved it. Very, very funny, sweet, and audacious especially in the weapon choices (no spoillers). Rip roaring fun.

MissJeanBrodiesprime · 30/08/2021 15:06

I love going to the cinema with my 19yr old DD. She’s got a fun taste in films so a good thing we can do together. It’s expensive but we never buy food there. Although I prefer gritty dramas there have been several good Marvel films recently.

MissJeanBrodiesprime · 30/08/2021 15:09

Mind you since lockdown there have only ever been max. 8 people in there, so not sure how long they will survive if nothing changes.

Vbree · 30/08/2021 15:10

I love going to the cinema. My local one is an empire so the seats are really good. Still nicely spaced out and socially distanced. I love going alone in the evening with a mini bottle of
Prosecco! Hope to go again in the next couple of weeks.

GetOffThatPhone · 30/08/2021 17:09

I hear you. I've totally lost interest in films. Nothing ever really interests me.

Stath · 30/08/2021 17:39

Our local Cineworld has Unlimited passes that are £9.99 a month. I’ve got them for me and 3 of the kids. Also, if you have 241 Meerkat codes you can bring a friend for free on Tuesday or Wednesday.

We pack a picnic (and a bag for rubbish) and bring our own drinks. It’s been a lifesaver over the summer holidays, you only need to go twice a month to make your money back.

RampantIvy · 30/08/2021 18:16

We have a local independent cinema in our nearest market town. They have been hit so badly by lockdowns that hardly anyone goes there any more. I am so sad for them. We do use this cinema BTW, but there haven't been any films there that I want to see.

Againstmachine · 30/08/2021 18:19

To the op it doesn't seem you were much of a regular cinema goer before.

I love the cinema, you only have to pay ticket price, those people who buy everything then complain it's expensive are just sillly.

TigersandTeddybears · 30/08/2021 18:22

I have always gone about 3x a year. Slowed down from that due to covid but will go back to about 3x.

Kanaloa · 30/08/2021 18:23

I love the cinema! The local one near me is £5 per ticket, there is an Everyman in our nearest city and DH and I love it.

My fil always says ‘you never see a bad film in the cinema.’

Dreamstate · 30/08/2021 18:24

I loved going to the cinema but even pre cocid started to hate it with adults who can't even sit for 60 or 90 mins without talking! Fml why?! How hard is it to close your mouth. Not to mention those who eat with mouths open or use their phones.

I did start to go during daytime which was abif better since there were few people.

Since freedom day I've considered getting my cineoworld membership but the movies are lacking right now so I'll wait. Maybe next year

Kanaloa · 30/08/2021 18:24

We don’t generally buy snacks though as I couldn’t afford to go if we did.

AliasGrape · 30/08/2021 18:26

Rocketman was the last thing I went to see in the cinema too, before that I think it was Spectre. So safe to say I don’t go often these days, I used to go really regularly at least once if not twice a month and when I lived abroad I’d go once a week to watch something in the original English just as an opportunity to switch off in my home language for a bit.

Not sure why it’s lost its appeal for me these days, it’s not the cost in my case just that there’s not often something that appeals to me enough - I’m sure I probably miss some real gems but also a lot of dross.

McPancreas · 30/08/2021 18:32

We took DS to paw patrol and that was a good experience for him.

As for me it has to either quiet midweek screening or a film which would not be ruined by idiots in the audience because it is meant to be a bit of a social thing. Best examples I can think of is Straight out of Compton or rocket man.

Would never see anything I really care about

RampantIvy · 30/08/2021 18:43

DH and I went to see Parasite a week before lockdown.
