Not going to the cinemas anymore

carrotcakecream · 29/08/2021 19:50

I used to go the cinemas quite regularly years ago but over the past five years I reckon I've gone about 3 times in total, the last film I went to watch was Rocketman. Is anyone else the same as me?

OP posts:
housemdwaswrong · 29/08/2021 21:56

The last thing I saw in the cinema was Philadelphia. Grin Not my thing at all. :)

Meredusoleil · 29/08/2021 22:15

We love the cinema in my house and are lucky to have a Cineworld 10 minutes drive away! The family tickets are £6 each roughly or the Movies 4 Juniors are only £3 each. We have been once a week every week of the school holidays and have seen

The Croods 2
Space Jam 2
Jungle Cruise
Spirit Untamed
Around the world in 80 days
Two by two overboard

Whilst over the last 18 months I think I have seen 100 or more films at home, I have been to the cinema about 8 or 9 times when they have been open. Most of the films I see are not those that children go to, or indeed often have a large audience though.

Rooroobear · 29/08/2021 22:27

Ours local cinema is a reel cinema and prices are between £2.50-£4.50 absolute bargain!

Ours too. It's fab, isn't it?
Onestep2021 · 29/08/2021 22:30

£16 near me. 2 tickets and a glass of wine and some snacks and it’s £55.
Plus a baby sitter = £90

All to see a film which I can see a few months later on mh Home Screen.
I’d pay it if I knew the film was going to be epic for the big screen experience but I feel it’s so rare these days. I can’t find a link but I read an article recently which explained why movies have dropped in quality so much over the last 20 years. It was all to do with changes in the industry..

User135644 · 29/08/2021 22:30

I got back in the habbit in 2019 because there was quite a few good films out (like Rocket Man) that I wanted to see.

Back out the habbit now. Generally I find Hollywood to be boring an out of ideas these days.

TheSoapyFrog · 29/08/2021 22:31

I haven't been since Gravity in 2014. Nothing i really wanted to see.

User135644 · 29/08/2021 22:32

@broccolibush

I used to go all the time before the beginning of last year. We had unlimited passes so would go to see everything. We stopped going because of all the people who think getting their phone out to check messages during the screening was ok. Honestly in the last four months there wasn’t a single film that wasn’t spoiled by bright white screens popping up in our eyeline and spoiling the show. The cinema staff were abused if they ever spoke to people about it. So we don’t go anymore. Spoiled by selfish bastards.
I go when it's quiet. Usually afternoon during the week.
PurpleFlower1983 · 29/08/2021 22:34

We had Cineworld unlimited cards before the kids which were fab as we saw all sorts of great stuff we wouldn’t necessarily have gone to see, now trips are few and far between but we still enjoy it.

ChildrenGrowingUpTooFast · 29/08/2021 22:35

But £2.50 is £10 for a family of four. I find it easier to just rent and watch at home. We buy popcorn and sweets and drinks. Much more comfortable at home really.

PumpkinKlNG · 29/08/2021 22:36

I don’t go to the cinema as I don’t enjoy it, I take my kids if it’s a film they want to watch but that doesn’t count as I’m not going to see it. The last time I went (space jam) it was just over £30 for me and 4 children I think that’s very cheap!

User135644 · 29/08/2021 22:37

I go through waves with the cinema, I won't go for months then suddenly about 5 things get released that I want to see, I've been 4 times in the last month...

I think that's where trailers are effective as well. You go to the cinema and then see something else that looks good so you go and see that. Otherwise it'd pass you by.

MiddlesexGirl · 29/08/2021 22:38

Not enough decent films to make it worth the effort.
Plus noisy people with their rustly sweets and crisps, their phones and that awful fusty popcorn smelll. Altogether better at home 😂

WhateverHappenedToFayWray · 29/08/2021 22:42

I tend to go to independent cinemas rather than chains, the variety of films is so much better and I really love old movies.

CFEC · 29/08/2021 22:42

I’d say in the last 4 years I haven’t been to the cinema nearly as much as I used to and that’s with the decrease in prices. It used to be that I’d complain about going due to the price, but honestly in the last 4 years, whenever I’ve checked to see what’s on there’s been hardly anything that takes my fancy/ DH’s fancy/ our collective fancy Grin I can’t remember the last film I saw but it was definitely pre-Covid.

I’m hoping that this Autumn/ winter there will be some decent releases, stuff that I actually get excited about seeing. Though I have to say, the thought of sitting in a cinema post Covid, especially in the winter isn’t filling me with excitement...not sure I’ll bother.

bruffin · 29/08/2021 22:44

Use to go regularly. DH had a cineworld card and we had meerkat movies so cost for both of use to go weekly was £17 a month.
Havent got back the habit yet

Smeds · 29/08/2021 22:59

Its £4.99 each at my local Vue. We're big Marvel fans so that's what keeps us going. DH gets given Vue gift cards for his birthday most years.

This year we've seen Black Widow, Peter Rabbit 2, Paw Patrol and Free Guy which was pretty good.

Armychefbethebest · 29/08/2021 23:06

Ours is same as marcel, 2.50 before 1pm and 3.50 afterward we are in East Lancashire , we have probably been more than normal at this price pre covid there used to be a kids club on a sat and sun morning which was like 1.50 pp

KatherineJaneway · 30/08/2021 04:43

I haven't been since before covid. Not many decent films are on.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 30/08/2021 05:28

We used to go a lot. We tried to go a lot in the months before I gave birth as we knew we would have to give up going for a while. Then Covid hit and now I'm pregnant again.
I honestly can't imagine a time when we could get back into going to cinemas again.

Fridafever · 30/08/2021 05:30

I go a lot (there’s an odeon about 10 minute walk from us) and I never see people on their phones at the cinema. It must be a local culture thing maybe?

Boood · 30/08/2021 06:58

I hate what going to the cinema has become. Hate the overwhelming smell of junk food. Hate the way every film is interrupted multiple times by people moving around, chatting, playing with their phones... Basically, too many people who go to the cinema are too disgusting for it to be bearable to be shut in a room with them for two hours.

Wagglerock · 30/08/2021 07:15

I love the cinema - used to go pretty much every week when all the Oscars films are out and then whenever there was something good on. Sadly the two small children put a stop to that.

jay55 · 30/08/2021 07:21

I go most weeks, have an unlimited card. Enjoy the aircon when my flat is boiling.
I really missed it during lockdown.
