Not going to the cinemas anymore

I used to go the cinemas quite regularly years ago but over the past five years I reckon I've gone about 3 times in total, the last film I went to watch was Rocketman. Is anyone else the same as me?

Apparently our local Odeon is the most expensive outside of Leicester Square, but the price seems to have come down since covid. Used to be £12, now about £9. An Everyman opened a few months ago, but nobody goes as its £16, which is ridiculous.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 29/08/2021 20:40

We go if we really want to see a film. Some are better on a proper big screen. Weve been waiting for ages for the next Bond, and are counting the days now!
Last film I saw was Frozen 2. The joys of motherhood. (OK... I enjoyed it really...)

Sparklesocks · 29/08/2021 20:41

I love going but I’m instantly taken out of the film if someone is on their phone or talking, so I tend to avoid peak times as in my experience you’re more often to find that then.

Chasingsquirrels · 29/08/2021 20:43

Our local cinema is about £11 (Ely, Cambs).
We were away last weekend and the nearest cinema (Catterick Garrison) was £4 for a new release on Saturday night.

Oblomov21 · 29/08/2021 20:45

Surrey £7 Vue I can just about stomach. Rare to get it cheaper.

HerRoyalNotness · 29/08/2021 20:47

Ours used to be $5 before noon. Now they do 30% off before 3pm or something, so one adult, 3 kids are about US$24. Then they rinse me for snacks that come in at about $40-50. Grrrr.

SaminSeptember · 29/08/2021 20:49

During the pandemic they've either been closed or no exciting films coming out. I will go back when the good films come out though, looking forward to it in the autumn.

wordsareveryunnecessary · 29/08/2021 20:50

Our fabulous Cineworld isn't expensive. Same price as a couple of pints in a pub

isthismylifenow · 29/08/2021 20:50

I went last weekend, and the weekend before. Both times there was only one other family / couple in there with us.

We go to a casino subsidized one, as the prices of the others are quite ridiculous.

I do fear they are dying a death now.

DukeOfEarlGrey · 29/08/2021 20:50

I think it's because of Netflix and other on-demand TV. There is always something on there that I want to watch and it's v cheap and in the comfort of my own home. The cinema no longer holds the same appeal.

I do like going to the Everyman for the lovely experience, particularly when the do special screenings of theatre productions.

carrotcakecream · 29/08/2021 20:53

I do wonder with things like streaming what will be the future for cinema's, having said that I definitely would want to watch big blockbuster films like James Bond in a cinema.

Its 10 quid an adult 7.50 a child at our local cinema. 30 quid for a family of four.

waitingpatientlyforspring · 29/08/2021 20:56

I love the cinema. Our local vue is £4.99 and a few mins walk away so used to go a lot. Since lock down ended we haven't been loads but that is because there isn't loads if great films out

ToykotoLosAngeles · 29/08/2021 20:59

@VanishingAct

Haven't been to the cinema in about 5 years. Best enjoyed, in my experience, as a solo outing on a mid-week afternoon. Some delicious (non-crunchy and non-rustly) snacks and a couple of M&S cocktails in a tin. Three other people in the cinema. Bliss.

Must do this shortly!

I go on my own, often after 9pm, with a coffee. It's lovely and empty! It does help that I can see it from my house...
BoredZelda · 29/08/2021 20:59

I hate the cinema. The only reason I’ve been in the past few years was to take my daughter. It’s probably more because the quality of movies available is crap. We used to be able to find something my husband and I would enjoy but now it’s all Marvel and other franchise crap. He likes them but I don’t. I’d rather wait until it is streaming and sit with a cuppa and watch it in a comfy seat.

Ha, you must live near me!
carrotcakecream · 29/08/2021 21:04

When I used to go I used Meerkat movies which is 2 for 1

I went to one in Central London yesterday and the ticket was £17. Its £14 in my local town so still really expensive but the seats are more comfortable.

And not only was it £17 but the film was a bit crap too.
AlfonsoTheMango · 29/08/2021 21:12

@broccolibush

I used to go all the time before the beginning of last year. We had unlimited passes so would go to see everything. We stopped going because of all the people who think getting their phone out to check messages during the screening was ok. Honestly in the last four months there wasn’t a single film that wasn’t spoiled by bright white screens popping up in our eyeline and spoiling the show. The cinema staff were abused if they ever spoke to people about it. So we don’t go anymore. Spoiled by selfish bastards.
Yes! This is why I no longer go to the cinema.
Driftingblue · 29/08/2021 21:20

We don’t feel safe going anymore and I certainly don’t want to wear a mask just to watch a film. We love movies though so we have been working on converting a room into a small theater. So far we have reclining theater seats and a giant television. We ultimately went with that over a projector because of some issues with daytime viewing and still wanting the option to use the space for more casual tv watching. We also got a popcorn machine. Next step is the sound system. Dd is annoyed we are leaving the decorating until last. She wants us to paint and decorate like a proper cinema.

Lincslady53 · 29/08/2021 21:23

Pre Covid, I bought a one day travel insurance from Compare the Market, cost less than a fiver. This have us access to Meerkat Movies, 2 for 1 on Tuesday and Wednesdays. We could go on a Weds afternoon, two for £6 at our local Odeon. Haven't been since the first lockdown as I haven't seen any films that I want to go and see. Once the colder weather starts, I will probably start going again.

MeredithGreyishblue · 29/08/2021 21:36

@Rizzoli123

Husband took the kids to see paw patrol and we went last week to she the around the world in 80 days one. Film was ok but I got to the lindt shop so bonus for me 😂. Off this week as a treat before back to school husband wants to see the croods but not sure kids will think me and them would love to see paw patrol. Our local is cineworld and charges 40 for the 4 of us.
Croods 2 is fab! Grin
MadisonAvenue · 29/08/2021 21:42

We had Odeon Limitless cards and went weekly before Covid. We’ve cancelled the cards (which wasn’t easy, Odeon’s customer service has been shocking) and haven’t been since, I’d rather not sit in an enclosed space for a length of time.

Leftbutcameback · 29/08/2021 21:49

We go all the time - we have two multiplex ones near us. One is cheap, and the other has lovely reclining seats! We're also lucky enough to have a new independent cinema. Very decent ticket prices, firm seats, and no-one shining their phones!
